Description

G.W. McLintock would enjoy his success a lot more if his wife hadn’t left him...and returned. John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara play the warring couple in a marriage run joyfully amuck. Top ten box-office winner of 1963.

John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara were born to star in "The Taming of the Shrew," and this is the closest they ever got. Wayne plays a cattle baron whose estranged wife (O'Hara) wants a divorce. The film is basically one long, funny brawl between them, ending with a mud pit melee and Wayne publicly spanking O'Hara, which doesn't look quite so politically correct anymore. This is no great shakes--director Andrew V. McLaglen is simply hosting a party here--but it's worth a few chuckles and the stars' broad performances. --Tom Keogh

Description

Probably best remembered for the 1956 biblical epic, The Ten Commandments, and his appearance (as himself) in 1950’s Sunset Blvd., Cecil B. DeMille’s remarkable cinematic career stretches back as far as Charlie Chaplin’s. DeMille’s reputation as a demanding perfectionist was made in the early days of silent cinema, guiding the careers of such stars as Gloria Swanson, Mary Pickford, and Wallace Reid.

This remarkable collection of vintage DeMille classics – some making their DVD debut - includes the very first film "CB" ever made – 1914’s The Squaw Man – and continues to the end of the silent era, just before sound ushered in an entirely new art form – one in which DeMille, once again, thrived.

Bonus Features include rare newsreel footage of DeMille, an interview with Charlton Heston, and the complete 1921 film Miss Lulu Bett – directed by Cecil’s brother, William!

The Squaw Man (1914) – 74 mins. *The Virginian (1914) – 50 mins. Carmen (1915) – 56:30 mins. The Cheat (1915) – 59 mins. Disc One

The Squaw Man (1914) – A British captain (Dustin Farnum, recreating his stage role) comes to America and settles out West with an Indian girl (played by a Winnebago Indian woman named Princess Red Wing). DeMille’s first film and one of the first features ever produced. Cecil himself appears as the Faro dealer. 74 mins.

The Virginian (1914) – A cowboy (Dustin Farnum of The Squaw Man) must save his friend from the hangman’s noose by exposing the real bad guy (Billy Elmer of Kitty Foyle) before he can get the girl (Farnum’s future wife, Winifred Kingston). 50 mins.

Carmen (1915) – Based on the same novel that inspired Bizet’s opera, the story concerns a poor cigarette girl (Metropolitan opera star Geraldine Farrar) who falls for a bullfighter (Pedro de Cordoba of The Ghost Breakers), driving her jealous guardian (the doomed Wallace Reid) to murder. 56:30 mins.

The Cheat (1915) – Powerful melodrama about a two-timing wife (Broadway star Fanny Ward in her screen debut) who hooks up with a wealthy – and sadistic – Japanese ivory baron (Sessue Hayakawa of The Bridge on the River Kwai). 59 mins.

Disc Two

Joan the Woman (1916) – A soldier in World War I (Wallace Reid of The Affairs of Anatol) uncovers Joan of Arc’s sword, leading to her appearance (Geraldine Farrar of Carmen) in a vision and the telling of her life story. 133 mins.

The Romance of the Redwoods (1917) – A naive New England girl (the legendary Mary Pickford) moves out West and winds up falling for a stagecoach robber (Elliott Dexter of The Affairs of Anatol). 90 mins.

The Little American (1917) – Once again, the great Mary Pickford stars, this time as a young girl who finds herself pursued by a German-American (Jack Holt of San Francisco) and a French-American (Western star, Raymond Hatton) during World War One, leading to international intrigue. 65 mins.

Disc Three

Old Wives for New (1918) – An unhappy husband (Elliott Dexter of The Romance of the Redwoods) leaves his lazy wife (Sylvia Ashton of Greed) for a younger woman (King Vidor’s wife, Florence) who turns out to be involved in a murder! 71:30 mins.

The Whispering Chorus (1918) – An embezzler (Raymond Hatton of The Little American) assumes the identity of a dead man – but winds up being arrested for having murdered himself! Noah Beery Sr. (The Mark of Zorro) appears as a longshoreman. 81 mins.

Don’t Change Your Husband (1918) – A DeMille comedy with Gloria Swanson as a frustrated housewife who divorces her slob of a husband (Elliott Dexter of Flaming Youth) and marries another (Lew Cody of Dishonored), only to find she’s gone from the frying pan into the fire. 79 mins.

Male and Female (1919) – Turning from comedy to a DeMille drama, Gloria Swanson is a spoiled rich girl who learns about the qualities that really matter when she’s shipwrecked with her resourceful butler (Thomas Meighan of The Miracle Man). 115 mins.

Disc Four

Why Change Your Wife? (1920) – Another comedy in which Gloria Swanson – in a variation of Don’t Change Your Husband – is the wife who is divorced by her frustrated husband (Thomas Meighan again) after he meets the lovely Bebe Daniels (42nd Street). 91 mins.

The Affairs of Anatol (1921) – This time, both husband and wife are two-timing each other in this DeMille comedy that features the ill-fated Wallace Reid (who had little more than a year to live) and, once again, Bebe Daniels. 117 mins.

Manslaughter (1922) – A thrill-seeking society girl (John Gilbert’s wife, Leatrice Joy) causes the death of a motorcycle cop (Jack Mower of Dark Victory) and winds up sent to prison by her prosecutor-fiancé (once again, Thomas Meighan) who later descends into alcoholism. 100 mins.

Disc Five

The Road to Yesterday (1925) – A frustrated wife (Jetta Goudal of The Cardboard Lover) realizes the reason she’s sexually dysfunctional with her husband (Joseph Schildkraut of The Life of Emile Zola) is that in an earlier life, during the reign of Elizabeth I, she was a gypsy who was burned at the stake. Future Hopalong Cassidy William Boyd is a supporting player. 107 mins.

The Volga Boatman (1926) – A Russian Revolution tale concerning a princess (Elinor Fair of The Miracle Man) who is engaged to a prince (Victor Varconi of The King of Kings), but falls in love with a peasant (once again, William Boyd). Boyd’s marriage proposal in the film became his actual proposal to future wife, Fair! 120 mins.

BONUS FEATURES

Miss Lulu Bett (1921) – Cecil B. DeMille’s brother, William, directed this powerful drama, based on the Pulitzer-Prize-winning play about a young woman (Lois Wilson of Bright Eyes) who discovers that she’s married to a man (Clarence Burton of The King of Kings) who is already married. 71 mins. The Pink Panther: The history of film comedy would have been much altered if Peter Ustinov had stayed in the role of Jacques Clouseau, the bumbling French police inspector in The Pink Panther. But Ustinov dropped out, the role went to Peter Sellers, and a classic character was born: suspicious, blundering, with a pompous little mustache and a sometimes impenetrable accent, Clouseau was always one step behind everybody else in the room. The Pink Panther introduced Clouseau hot on the trail of a famous jewel thief (David Niven), who may be planning to make off with an expensive gem known as the Pink Panther. Set in a European ski resort, this bubbly comedy is a wonderful dose of '60s style, from the famous Henry Mancini theme music to the presence of two of Europe's top sex symbols of the era, Claudia Cardinale and Capucine. The film also introduced the popular cartoon Pink Panther, slinking around to Mancini's music in an animated credits sequence. The film's success brought a follow-up, A Shot in the Dark, also released in 1964; after 11 years, Sellers and top comedy director Blake Edwards (10) returned with three more sequels. --Robert Horton

A Fistful of Dollars: A Fistful of Dollars launched the spaghetti Western and catapulted Clint Eastwood to stardom. Based on Akira Kurosawa's 1961 samurai picture Yojimbo, it scored a resounding success (in Italy in 1964 and the U.S. in 1967), as did its sequels, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The advertising campaign promoted Eastwood's character--laconic, amoral, dangerous--as the Man with No Name (though in the film he's clearly referred to as Joe), and audiences loved the movie's refreshing new take on the Western genre. Gone are the pieties about making the streets safe for women and children. Instead it's every man for himself. Striking, too, was a new emphasis on violence, with stylized, almost balletic gunfights and baroque touches such as Eastwood's armored breastplate. The Dollars films had a marked influence on the Hollywood Western--for example, Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch--but their most enduring legacy is Clint Eastwood himself. --Edward Buscombe

Dr. No: Released in 1962, this first James Bond movie remains one of the best, and serves as an entertaining reminder that the Bond series began (in keeping with Ian Fleming's novels) with a surprising lack of gadgetry and big-budget fireworks. Sean Connery was just 32 years old when he won the role of Agent 007. In his first adventure James Bond is called to Jamaica where a colleague and secretary have been mysteriously killed. With an American CIA agent (Jack Lord, pre-Hawaii Five-O), they discover that the nefarious Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) is scheming to blackmail the U.S. government with a device capable of deflecting and destroying U.S. rockets launched from Cape Canaveral. Of course, Bond takes time off from his exploits to enjoy the company of a few gorgeous women, including the bikini-clad Ursula Andress. She gloriously kicks off the long-standing tradition of Bond women who know how to please their favorite secret agent. A sexist anachronism? Maybe, but this is Bond at his purest, kicking off a series of movies that shows no sign of slowing down. --Jeff Shannon

The Magnificent Seven: Akira Kurosawa's rousing Seven Samurai was a natural for an American remake--after all, the codes and conventions of ancient Japan and the Wild West (at least the mythical movie West) are not so very far apart. Thus The Magnificent Seven effortlessly turns samurai into cowboys (the same trick worked more than once: Kurosawa's Yojimbo became Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars). The beleaguered denizens of a Mexican village, weary of attacks by banditos, hire seven gunslingers to repel the invaders once and for all. The gunmen are cool and capable, with most of the actors playing them just on the cusp of '60s stardom: Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn. The man who brings these warriors together is Yul Brynner, the baddest bald man in the West. There's nothing especially stylish about the approach of veteran director John Sturges (The Great Escape), but the storytelling is clear and strong, and the charisma of the young guns fairly flies off the screen. If that isn't enough to awaken the 12-year-old kid inside anyone, the unforgettable Elmer Bernstein music will do it: bum-bum-ba-bum, bum-ba-bum-ba-bum.... Followed by three inferior sequels, Return of the Seven, Guns of the Magnificent Seven, and The Magnificent Seven Ride! --Robert Horton

It was on September 12 1959 that Bonanza first appeared on television. In an interesting twist on the usual trivia this show originally was intended as a vehicle to sell color TV sets! RCA the parent company of NBC wanted a show with a lot of outdoor scenes to promote its new color television sets. Although the ratings of the show were marginal in the first two years it staying on the air and became a huge success when it was moved from its original time slot of 7:30 pm on Saturday to Sunday night at 9:00 pm. Since that time the show has become an American tradition with its rich family oriented story lines great western action and endearing characters. The most fertile period of D.W. Griffith's early career is generously preserved in this special edition of Biograph Shorts. A satisfied actor in early silent films, Griffith was hesitant when the American Biograph company offered him a director's job in 1908, but his first film, "The Adventures of Dollie" (reconstructed here from a Library of Congress paper print), gave Griffith the filmmaking fever, and from 1908 to 1913 he averaged two or three shorts per week, of which these 23 represent a comprehensive sampling. Obscurities mingle with masterpieces on two DVDs; highlights include 1909's "A Corner in Wheat" (which established Griffith's mastery of social realism); "The Musketeers of Pig Alley," a pioneering gangster film shot on authentic New York locations; and "The Battle at Elderbush Gulch," a dynamic early Western.

Although many of these films appear on another compilation (D.W. Griffith: Years of Discovery), important exceptions include 1911's "Enoch Arden" (a prestigious adaptation of Tennyson's poem); "The Usurer," one of Griffith's best films from 1910; "The Last Drop of Water," a grand-scale Western made during Griffith's first trip to California (and an indication of grander films to come); and "His Trust," the first of a two-part serial featuring Griffith's then-common use of blackfaced actors as "noble Negroes." Most important (in addition to early appearances by Lillian Gish, Lionel Barrymore, and other silent stars) is the arc of progress that these films represent. In Griffith's capable hands, we witness "flickers" in their most rapid stage of development, incorporating new techniques (parallel action and cross-cutting, changing camera angles within a scene, dramatic close-ups) from a tireless innovator who would soon rise to the challenge of epic, feature-length productions. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Based on a novel by Louis L’Amour and full of witty exchanges and a striking visual style, the film follows a vaudeville troupe that stays one step ahead of the bill collector as it tours the frontier circa 1880. The central premise finds ringleaders Angela Rossini (Loren) and Tom Healy (Quinn) needing a more flamboyant act than normal in order to entertain the citizens of the wild West.

Amazon.com essential video

Heller in Pink Tights features a captivating if intriguingly awkward story born of an unusual number of powerful, creative voices behind the camera. The 1960 film's screenplay was co-written by Walter Bernstein (Fail Safe), whose blacklisting following his unfriendly testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee ended the year before with Heller star Sophia Loren's wartime romance, That Kind of Woman. The equally legendary Dudley Nichols (Stagecoach) shared writing credit; Carlo Ponti (Blow-Up), Loren's strong-minded husband, co-produced; and Hollywood Golden Age director George Cukor (The Philadelphia Story) presided over the odd, Louis L'Amour-based Western.

Loren plays Angela Rossini, leading lady in a down-on-its-luck, traveling theatrical company barely held together by founder Tom Healy (a sympathetic but largely miscast Anthony Quinn). Always staying a step ahead of creditors and lawmen, the troupe stops in a Wyoming town where a hired gunman, Mabry (Steve Forrest), "wins" the reckless Angela, who has long had a romance with Healy, in a poker game. Determined to keep her even as he eludes assassins, Mabry attaches himself to the dispirited Healy's company as it rides through dangerous Indian territory. The final act finds all the principals battling their way to a resolution behind the scenes of a play at a theater Angela has built for Tom with money she stole from Mabry. It's all a little clunky, but Cukor ensures a certain vitality in the proceedings, moves comfortably between striking shifts of comedy to intense drama, makes Loren look great, and exposes--to an unexpected degree--a psychological bond between Angela and Mabry. --Tom Keogh
