Amazon.comSpike TV's first season of The Joe Schmo Show is a real-life variation on the Jim Carrey comedy The Truman Show, in which Carrey played a man unaware he is the star of a television series, living on an enormous set and surrounded by actors playing family, co-workers, neighbors, etc. Joe Schmo fools a gregarious, likable 27-year-old fellow, Matt Kennedy Gould, into believing he's part of the cast of a reality-TV program called Lap of Luxury, competing for a $100,000 prize by surviving humiliating trials and those inevitable, once-per-week evictions of unlucky contestants. What Gould doesn't know is that his competitors--all living in the same house under the watchful eye of an ubiquitous production crew--are all actors playing sundry reality-TV stereotypes: the token gay guy, the good-looking sweetheart, the good-looking bitch, the clown, Mr. Macho, the borderline-pariah, etc. The eight episodes in The Joe Schmo Show: Season One Uncensored look and sound like any other reality gimmick, though part of what makes the series fun are little risk elements that threaten to blow open the whole scheme or at least create suspicion in Gould's mind. There are several occasions in which one or another actor gets confused about a character detail and Gould wonders about apparent contradictions; once or twice, actors have to leave a situation because they are close to cracking up. For the most part, however, the tall, gullible, good-natured hero bonds with his "housemates" and keeps a smile on while participating in underwear-swapping contests, gross-out meals, and tense elimination rituals. The final episode, in which Gould is told the truth, is surprisingly moving. This DVD set includes extensive supplementary material, including Gould's after-the-fact, mixed responses to many of his experiences. --Tom Keogh

DescriptionIn "Flavor of Love," 20 single women from all walks of life, selected for their expressed love for Flav, move into a "phat crib" in Los Angeles and vie for his affection. With help and advice from Big Rick, Flav's gigantic body-guard and chauffeur, Flavor Flav will date all of the women, weed out the ones who are only after his fame and fortune...and in the end will choose his one true love. Amazon.comAt their peak in the late-1980s, who could've predicted that Public Enemy's hype man would become one of reality TV's biggest stars? For William Drayton Jr., AKA Flavor Flav, the journey began with VH1's The Surreal Life 3, which spawned Strange Love (co-starring the inimitable Brigitte Nielsen), culminating in Flavor of Love, a down and dirty version of ABC's soft-focus Bachelor. Instead of a tall, bland hunk, the prize is a diminutive 46-year-old with a unique vocabulary ("Yeah, Boyeee!"), an unusual dress sense (Viking helmets, sci-fi sunglasses, wall clock necklaces), and his own "Body Man," Big Rick. Over the course of this 10-part series, 20 women compete to become Flav's lady love. Seeing as the show is made for cable--and that this is the unrated edition--that means risqué language and revealing outfits are fair game (there's even a little Girls Gone Wild nudity from a few Flavorettes). Because Flav isn't good with names, he doles out some easy-to-remember handles. There's the moody Rain, sensitive Smiley, catty New York, etc. In each episode (except for the recap), he eliminates one to five contestants. Those left standing "know what time it is." Challenges include hot tub-speed dating, a fried chicken cook-off, and Vegas-style roulette. A cross between Jerry Springer and a rap video, the "celebreality" extravaganza is an explosion of hair extensions and false eyelashes set to a soundtrack of screaming and crying. Nonetheless, Flavor of Love pulled in the punters--the finale was the highest rated program in the network's history--and was renewed for a second go-round, indicating that America was "feeling" the Flav...and that the winner split the crib. Guests include Nielsen and Flav's Church-going mom, Anna. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

DescriptionYou’re cordially invited to Dog and Beth’s one-of-a-kind Bounty Hunter wedding. Once an outlaw and now a lawman, Duane "The Dog" Chapman is a modern-day bounty hunter with old-fashioned values and a top-rated real-life series. Now, after ten years together, Dog and his common-law wife, Beth, head off to the Big Island of Hawaii for a wedding like no other. Dog and Beth hope to relax as they finalize the details of their Hawaiian nuptials, but when news hits that there is a criminal on the run, the duo and their posse can’t say no to bringing a fugitive to justice. As the big day arrives, tragedy unexpectedly strikes the family--but despite their loss, Dog and Beth ultimately choose to reaffirm their bond in a wedding like non other. See the softer side of two of television’s roughest, toughest, and most popular bond enforcers in DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER: THE WEDDING. DVD Features: Dog’s Wedding Ring, Dance Lessons, and Shopping with Beth Featurettes; Photo Album; Interactive Menus; Scene Selection Amazon.comMen and women are often at odds when choosing a video to watch together. Men want action; women crave romance. Here at last is the perfect DVD to bridge the Mars-Venus divide. Outlaw turned pumped-up bounty hunter Duane "The Dog" Chapman at last ties the knot with his common-law wife, Beth, but not before engaging in a little premarital hunting. When they're not apprehending bail jumpers (and the Chapmans' lost dog) across Hawaii, Duane and Beth prepare for their nuptials. She wants him to schedule "date nights" and work on his "love language." At the very least, she would like his sons to stop referring to their impending nuptials as "the funeral." Meanwhile, he risks her wrath by pursuing an elusive miscreant just hours before his rehearsal dinner. It's another typical day with the Dog, he proclaims. There's always "excitement, triumph, and Beth." But there is also a family tragedy that dampens the proceedings. This two-part episode from A&E's outrageous reality series--the network's highest rated broadcast at that time--has it all: Chases and dress fittings, profanity-laced take-downs, and heart-to-hearts about feelings. The Dog even cries! But guys can always fast-forward through that stuff. --Donald Liebenson

DescriptionIn "Flavor of Love," 20 single women from all walks of life, selected for their expressed love for Flav, move into a "phat crib" in Los Angeles and vie for his affection. With help and advice from his hip-hop buddies and a lady friend "on the inside", Flavor Flav will date all of the women, weed out the "gold diggers" and "video chicks" who are only after his fame and fortune...and in the end will choose his one true love… for the second time. Amazon.com What reality series is complete without booty calls, catfights, and accidental defecation? Sure, The Bachelor may have romantic locales and the promise of at least a few weeks of happiness with a tall and ridiculously handsome dude. But the second season of VH-1's raunchy, tacky dating series Flavor of Love has wild action and eagerness on the part of the contestants that borders on desperation. Never mind that the man all the ladies are fighting for is the diminutive Flavor Flav--once known as a rap pioneer for his work in Public Enemy, but best known today as Brigitte Nielsen's plaything from VH1's reality series The Surreal Life. Since the object of his affection turned him down in the previous season, Flav is back to select a potential wife from 20 contestants here eager to get their 15 minutes of fame by pretending to be in love with Flav. Both he and the contestants are much more aggressive this year than in the past and the implication is that if the girls want to make it to the next round, they'd better be willing to make some major nookie with him (and, in some cases, each other). The nicknames he bestows on the contestants add another comic book flavor to the show: There's Toastee, Nibblz, and the return of mouthy New York (back from Season One). And faster than you can say, "Oh no she didn't," New York is in the face of at least a few contestants she doesn't deem worthy of competition. Flavor of Love goes through the motions of being a real reality show, but it doesn't try that hard. It's obvious Flav is taking advantage of his popularity while he can and that the women are hoping their participation will help launch their modeling/acting/singing careers. But no one in their right mind actually believes that Flav will marry any of these unusual women. --Jae-Ha Kim

Amazon.comFans of comedian Dave Attell's charmingly seedy TV series Insomniac will be pleased by this two-disc set, which features twice the episodes included in the previous set as well as some amusing extras. This time around, the ever-garrulous Attell visits nine U.S. cities for lowbrow fun after dark, as well as Amsterdam to commit each of the Seven Deadly Sins in a single evening. In addition to the usual bar-hopping, he also attends Miami's debauched FantasyFest, cruises with strippers in Las Vegas and deals with perpetual daylight in Alaska, all of which feature the nudity and strong language missing from the broadcast versions. However, the show's highlights remain Attell's repartee with people on the street, where his quick and salty wit takes center stage. Comedy Central's DVD set includes audio commentary by Attell and his producers on several episodes, a handful of inconsequential deleted scenes, and clips from some of the network's other programs, including Crank Yankers. --Paul Gaita

DescriptionDOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER: THE BEST OF SEASON 3 features Dog’s personally selected favorite eight episodes from the fast and furious, highly rated, third season of the hit real-life A&E series. Follow Dog and his band of rugged crime-busting accomplices--which includes his own flesh and blood--as they scourge the land of bail jumpers, escaped criminals, and vagabond outlaws. As usual, misleading informants, impossible stakeouts, and near-escapes are all in a day’s work for the toughest law enforcer on television. Amazon.comDuane "Dog" Chapman and his posse are on the prowl again, scouring the underbelly of Honolulu for its most-wanted miscreants in Dog the Bounty Hunter: The Best of Season Three. The season kicks off with Dog introducing his daughter, Lyssa, to the family business, making her the third child in Dog's pack to suit up for a stakeout. Shortly after she is enlisted in a full-blown hunt for a culprit with a laundry list of assault charges, she decides that bounty hunting might not be the career of choice for her. Sons Duane Lee and Leland, along with brother Tim and wife Beth, also join Dog in the show's adventures, juxtaposing the hard-nosed bounty-hunting business with the clan's enduring family spirit. Bringing this contrast to a crescendo is Dog's quest to save the holidays by hunting a Christmas grinch and courting an elusive Cupid, who is wooed into turning herself in with a special valentine from Leland. No one is beyond Dog's grasp (and sympathy), it seems, as he tracks down his ex-housekeeper who fears that he may be ashamed of her thieving ways. The two share tears and hugs before Dog carts her off to prison. It's easy to cheer for Dog, half tough-as-nails, half family man, in this collection of eight suspenseful and amusing episodes. --Libby Chennell

DescriptionFeatures the best and worst performances from the 1st four seasons of the pop cultural phenomena American Idol. Worst: Includes outrageous performances from William Hung and a collection of some of the most unreal performers. Best: Features the hottest talent to come out of the show: Carrie Underwood, Bo Bice, Fantasia (single "I Believe" hit #1 on the charts), Diana Degarmo (single "Dreams" hit #2 on the Billboard charts), Constantine, Clay Aiken (first single was #1 with 400,000 sold first week), Ruben Studdard (platinum artist whose album was in the Top 10 for 6 weeks), and Kelly Clarkson (double platinum). Amazon.comMany millions adore it, many others probably wish it was illegal, but there's no denying the magnetic pull of American Idol on television viewers. Maybe it's that we can't avert our eyes from the train wreck that comprises about 90% of the contestants, or that we appreciate the heart and soul of the ones who are genuinely talented; or maybe we just love to hate house villain Simon Cowell and his caustic put-downs. Good, bad, or whatever, American Idol really is the phenomenon it claims to be. And with some ten hours of material spread out over three discs--there's so much stuff here that even the bonus features have bonus features--this overview of the first four seasons will surely satisfy even the most ardent fans. Disc One, The Best Of, takes us from the first step in the process (the cattle-call try-outs so popular they need stadiums to accommodate all the hopefuls) through the initial auditions and interviews with judges Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul to the performances seen on the telecasts themselves--including those by eventual winners Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, and Carrie Underwood, as well as runners-up Bo Bice and Clay Aiken, among others. In other words, nothing unexpected. Indeed, for many viewers, Disc Two (The Worst Of) will likely be the favorite. For it is here that the set focuses on our fascination with the profoundly clueless, those utterly untalented folks who make us squirm with their outlandish self-delusion and willingness, nay eagerness, to humiliate themselves on TV (epitomized by William "She Bangs" Hung, the so-bad-he's-good sideshow that’s depressing on so many levels), only to then find themselves genuinely astonished and angry when they fail to make the cut. Finally, Disc Three includes an interview with Abdul, "homecoming" footage featuring Underwood and Bice, and additional interviews from the fourth season. If American Idol has a dirty little secret (aside from Abdul's personal life), it's that the show hasn't produced a single artist with not just a good voice but an original one--a Norah Jones, an Alicia Keys, a John Mayer, someone can play and write as well as sing. But then, that's not what the show is about; we're frequently reminded that this is "a singing competition," pure and simple. Which brings us to what may well be this exhaustive (and perhaps exhausting, too) set's defining moment: When a particularly awful "singer" begs to do another tune, Cowell says, "There's only so much punishment a human being can take." Replies the contestant: "No, I can take a lot more." --Sam Graham
