"It's good to be me," says Gene Simmons, and the Kiss bassist-frontman could hardly find a better vehicle for himself than Family Jewels, the first season of which (13 episodes, plus extras) is presented here on two discs. There has rarely been anyone as shamelessly and gleefully skilled at self-promotion as Simmons, who makes P.T. Barnum look like a shrinking violet and pro football player Terrell Owens seem modest. Whether he is glorifying or parodying his Rock God image (the show features both in roughly equal measure), he knows that either way, it's all about him--and it was ever thus for a guy whose success has always depended at least as much, if not more, on image and marketing as on music.

Fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek, and just naughty enough, the 22-minute episodes keep it short and simple, focusing on Simmons' principal preoccupations: his disdain for matrimony (although he and former Playboy playmate Shannon Tweed have been together for decades, they've never married), and, of course, his legendary reputation as a sex machine (the current estimate is 4,600 conquests). Thus we find Gene going to a Hooters opening in Las Vegas; conducting auditions for his latest scam, a video series called "Sexercise"; weekending at a health spa with Tweed, who refuses to sleep with him unless he drops a few pounds; and appearing on a Playboy Channel show with porn stars like Jenna Jameson… while Tweed and/or their two kids (teens Nick and Sophie), who love to goof on Dad, are at home setting fire to his rock star pants or some such shenanigans. The existence of a blooper reel among the bonus material hardly supports the notion that the show is unscripted and spontaneous; Simmons' day with an almost frighteningly obsessive Kiss fan, during which he confides to Tweed that at times the adulation "just becomes too much," provides one of the few "real" moments. Little matter. Despite his bluster, or more likely because of it, Simmons is good-natured, smart, and genuinely likeable; so are his kids, who are kinda snarky (but then, what teenager isn't?) but seem well-adjusted and a lot brighter than Ozzy Osbourne's sullen brood. If there's one obvious omission, it's that so little of Family Jewels has anything to do with music (a ten-minute bonus feature called "Lost Songs" is about it). Then again, those uninterested in rock 'n' rolling all night and partying every day may consider that a major selling point. --Sam Graham

Description

America's hottest celebutantes, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, are back, and this time, they're taking over the country one family at a time! With their heated rivalry in high gear, the girls compete fiercely to see who would make a better housewife. Each hilarious episode brings a new family, a new challenge, and a new excuse to party! Never mind the fact that there are diapers to change and houses to clean when there are tequila shots to down and strip clubs to hit! Reality television has never been this wild...Simply put, it's simply outrageous!

For being one of the shows that's often thought of as an example of reality TV's origins, there's never been much reality in the overly long-lived series The Simple Life. This two-sided, single disc of the fourth (and last) season has even less to do with reality than any of its preceding installments. Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are still acting their parts of simpleton celebrities thrust into the "real" lives of regular folk, but during the contractually obligated production of what had become an astonishingly popular show, the poor little rich girls were in the midst of a bitter feud. They hated each others' guts, weren't speaking, and thanks to the machinations of their individual publicity experts, the whole world knew it. Consequently, the two rarely share screen time together except for ample sequences of split-screening, which makes for an even more bizarre pairing for two dim-witted million-heiresses who remain famous for nothing more that, well, being famous. Season four consists of a variety of slices of suburban Los Angeles family life with the wife/mother role being taken over on alternate days by either Paris or Nicole. As usual, they sneer and make fun of the lower class that they visit--all the while showing absolutely no class of their own. Their feud is vaguely addressed in the first episode, with the other nine being fairly rote imitations of their earlier-season forays into the humdrum of screaming kids, grocery shopping, preparing food, bill-paying, and every other mundane things the girls have been coached into criticizing and laughing at by the show's producers. We're invited into some parts of the girls' "real" lives with glimpses into their homes amidst their psychological destruction of others'. But as with the prior seasons, the can't-look-away-from-the-train-wreck aspect is the thing that keeps our attention. They hate us and we hate them, so it's the very definition of symbiotic entertainment. Since they also hate each other there's an extra element of amusement; only don't think too hard lest the fine line between amusement and contempt disappears. Who knows if their feud was real or made up by the genius publicity machines behind their fame. One thing that's not made up and definitely not comical is the gruesome change in Nicole Richie's body as her issues with low body weight reveal itself over the course of the episodes. No matter how much Paris despised her, she should have taken her ex-friend to In-N-Out for a few late-night burger binges (without the purging). --Ted Fry

For Depression-era audiences, much of the fun of screwball comedies such as It Happened One Night and My Man Godfrey, was the pleasure of watching rich people act like loons or get their redemptive comeuppance from some Average Joe. The same vicarious kicks are at play in the sophomore season of The Simple Life, in which Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie drive from Florida to California. With no cash or credit cards, they must depend on the kindness of strangers (invariably nonplussed men whom the ladies approach for handouts at toll booths, gas stations, or fast food joints). The series takes great delight in putting the pampered and privileged duo in embarrassing situations, such as getting them jobs as maids at a nudist resort. But through it all, our uneasy riders are game for almost anything and never lose their 'tude. And just when their antics try the viewers' patience or sympathy (at the nudist resort, they shamelessly goldbrick on the job, posing as guests and calling for a maid to clean up the room for which they are responsible), they somehow redeem themselves. On a cattle drive, they pull a City Slickers and save one steer from slaughter. But comeuppance? These girls don't know the meaning of the word (insert your own joke here). They are forced to take it from several of their less-than-impressed hosts, but they also dish it out, as witness one episode in which one unwitting antagonist is served a dog food sausage courtesy of Nicole. How much of this is staged is probably beside the point. The Simple Life is unreality television at its most addictive. Fasten your seatbelts. --Donald Liebenson

Description

How Crazy can it get when two rich, sexy, big-city blondes, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, find themselves knee-deep in rural reality, looking for fun in all the wrong places yet trying to survive without credit cards, nightclubs, and Saks 5th Avenue! With wild, you-gotta-see-it-to-believe-it outtakes, this is the show that's got everybody talking! So lock up your sons and see what happens when the girls with everything go from filthy rich…to just plan filthy!

Amazon.com

The hook of The Simple Life is irresistible: Two wealthy, pampered young women go from upper-crust Los Angeles to an Arkansas farm to prove that they can survive without their cell phones and credit cards. As hotel heiress Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie (daughter of pop star Lionel) blithely move in with a farm family, the Ledings, the culture clash immediately becomes a train wreck; when asked to pluck chickens, Richie declares, "I'm not plucking anything but my eyebrows." They try to work a series of jobs (at a dairy farm, at a fast-food joint, at a livestock auction), but they possess not a jot of work ethic or any sense of the consequences of failure. Like the girls themselves, this 2003 reality show becomes both fascinating and repellent, comic and horrifying. It's like watching alien beings trying to masquerade as people. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Experience the most unbelievable transformations from EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION SEASON 1 in this inspiring 2-disc set, including exclusive bonus features that take you behind-the-scenes! In just seven days, Ty Pennington and the remarkable design team will present a deserving family with the home of their dreams. In a race against time, on a project that would normally take a crew four months to complete, designers and contractors, hundreds of workers and community members, plus special guest stars come together to build homes and change lives.~

Amazon.com

Get out your handkerchiefs. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is all about warm fuzzies, tear-jerking, and a lot of cool houses. In this edition (it should be noted that the DVD is a best-of from Season One, not the complete season), a crew, led by former Trading Spaces carpenter Ty Pennington, finds families with extreme needs, such as a child allergic to his mold-infested house and a pair of siblings who became guardian to their six younger brothers and sisters when their parents died within days of each other. They send the family off on vacation for seven days and work around the clock to gut, design, build, and decorate their dream house. Watching them bicker (particularly between building planner Constance Ramos and exterior designer Preston Sharp) and stress out over making their deadline, you wonder: why don't they just keep the family out of the house an extra day or two? But then again, that's what creates drama.

Some of the transformations are truly impressive: a family of three sons receives a mini-baseball field at 1/7th scale in their backyard, complete with authentic Dodger Stadium grass. A tri-level home is completely transformed--including an elevator--to accommodate a teen in a wheelchair. Sometimes they even throw in bonus prizes: a grill the size of a truck for a community mother figure who liked to barbecue for the homeless in her front yard; paying off the mortgage for the eight siblings living on their own. While the ideas make for good television, some of their shtick is all too repetitive, particularly prank-calling each family on vacation to trick them into thinking their house will be lined with fluorescent orange carpet. Host Pennington is especially guilty of this, and his hunk-on-sugar routine can get tiresome. Still, if you enjoy watching nice people's dreams come true, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will tickle your fancy. --Ellen A. Kim

Description

Donald Trump, one of America's, most successful businessman, teams up with Executive Producer Mark Burnett ("Survivor") to create a thrilling, no holds barred game where the ultimate prize is the dream job of a lifetime. Now experience the phenomenon like never before with all the best moments you didn't see on TV, including an exclusive sneak peek at "The Apprentice 2!".

Amazon.com

Who'd have predicted The Apprentice would become such a hit? (Donald Trump aside.) And not just any hit, but one of the top-rated programs of the 2004 television season. A number of reality shows had crashed and burned before The Apprentice made its debut. Just as it was starting to seem as if the heyday of the non-scripted program was coming to an end--not counting American Idol--NBC's entrant into an overcrowded field was as an out-of-the-gate, must-see phenomenon.

The concept is simple. Real estate magnate Trump selects 16 players from business applicants across the nation. The grand prize? A $250,000-a-year job running one of his companies. As in producer Mark Burnett's Survivor, the contestants are then sent to an island--the island of Manhattan. In the first episode, they're introduced, then divided into two teams: the men (Versacorp) versus the women (Protégé). From this point on, they will compete in a variety of business-related challenges. The parallels to Survivor are clear, but brains will be more important than brawn--although charisma never hurts. The challenges include selling a product, managing a restaurant, and devising an advertising campaign.

At the end of each episode, the losing team is sent to the boardroom, where they meet with Trump and advisors Carolyn and George. The person considered most responsible for the loss gets to hear the immortal words: "You're fired." Although there can only be one winner, several stars would emerge during the first season: unctuous Sam, plainspoken Nick, sassy Heidi, and abrasive Omarosa. Various celebrities would also make guest appearances, such as Isaac Mizrahi, Regis Philbin, and Jessica Simpson. The success of The Apprentice would inspire a second season, as well as a host of imitators and spoofs, like Billionaire with Richard Branson and The Assistant with Andy Dick. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Welcome to Hoover, Alabama, where football is a way of life. "Two-A-Days" follows the 2005 football season of the Hoover High School Buccaneers of Hoover, Alabama as they chase their fourth state championship title in five years while also balancing the normal pressures of being high school seniors.

Amazon.com

It's the opposite of Freaks and Geeks. MTV's documentary series Two-A-Days is a look at the lives of the popular kids, the varsity football players and cheerleaders of Alabama's Hoover High. If the film-turned-TV program Friday Night Lights is fiction that feels like fact, Two-A-Days takes the fiction out of that equation. The show spends an entire season with the Buccaneers--two practices every day. At the start of 2005, the Bucs are in the midst of a 23-game winning streak. That can't last forever. It doesn't. As in the NBC drama, the town revolves around football, which adds to the stress level, i.e. when the Bucs lose, the community mourns. The primary players are Ross (quarterback), Repete (defensive end), Goose (defensive tackle), and Max and narrator Alex (safetys). As Alex notes in the pilot ("Kickoff"), "At Hoover, football is like a religion and the players on our high school team are celebrities." The top dog is tough-talking head coach Rush Propst, who gives R. Lee Ermey's Full Metal Jacket drill sergeant a run for the money. They're a charismatic bunch, but it's too bad gentle giant Bryan, a band member during the off-season, gets such short shrift.

In the first season (the series was renewed for a second), the players deal with injuries, demanding parents, and suspicious girlfriends. They ease the pressure with pranks and parties. Their biggest pressure: Will the Buccaneers win their fourth consecutive state championship or will they let personal problems get in the way? The answer comes in the eighth episode ("One Last Game"). The ninth ("What Next?") wraps up the rest of the year, while the third disc ("Overtime") features highlights, outtakes, and promo spots. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
