DescriptionJanuary, 1945. In the uncertain days leading up to the Allied bombings of Dresden, Anna (Felicitas Woll) discovers Robert Newman (John Light), an injured British pilot, hiding in a hospital cellar. Torn between loyalty and desire, the young nurse risks everything to help him recover. As Anna struggles to keep his true identity a secret and Robert battles to survive behind enemy lines, a catastrophic fate descends upon the city. DVD Extras: Making-of Featurette, Archival Military Footage of the Dresden bombings Amazon.comA love story set amidst the chaos and horror of World War II, Dresden tells the tale of a beautiful young German nurse who falls in love with an injured British pilot. Anna (Felicitas Woll) is engaged to a wealthy doctor, but she wants more than the bland certainty he can offer her. While on her rounds at the hospital, she discovers Robert (John Light), who is in hiding. Anna knows little about him and is initially unaware that he is a British soldier, and therefore her enemy. What starts as a quiet, private romance escalates into an affair that the couple has a difficult time containing. Woll and Light make beautiful leads, but it's the supporting characters who stand out. Dr. Carl Mauth (Heiner Lauterbach), Anna's father, is a complicated and compelling man who will resort to stealing morphine if his patients are in need. Watching his emotive face, viewers understand his intent without having to hear him speak. Dresden's filmmakers do a formidable job of presenting both the Brits and the Germans as flawed people who aren't sure what is right and wrong. Set in January, 1945, prior to the Allied bombings of Dresden, the German production team does a fine job of meshing soap opera type melodrama with feverish action. There are some scenes that are horrific and gruesome to watch. But more often than not, they succinctly set the tone for the violence that accompanies war. Though the three-hour miniseries (which offers both English and German with English subtitles) has been favorably compared with the epic love story portrayed in Titanic, it also shares some of the sweet aspects of Summer of My German Soldier, a 1978 made-for-TV movie that depicts the unlikely friendship between a young Jewish girl and a German POW. As with war, there sometimes is no explanation for love. It just happens. --Jae-Ha Kim

DescriptionA Woman of Substance: Based on Barbara Taylor Bradford's novel, this 1984 miniseries tells the timeless rags-to-riches tale of servant girl Emma Harte. Hold the Dream: This second installment sees the mature Emma heroically trying to maintain her empire. To Be the Best: This is the final chapter in the masterpiece triology of Emma Harte, a bright but impoverished servant girl who rises to become a department store magnate. With Anthony Hopkins, Barry Bostwick, Deborah Kerr, Jenny Seagrove, Liam Neeson, Lindsay Wagner, Stephanie Beacham. Amazon.comA Woman of Substance Determined to ruin the upper-class Fairley family who wronged her, Emma Harte (Jenny Seagrove) aims to become one of the richest women in the world. Although anachronistic for a woman born around 1890, it is exhilarating to watch her think and act like a contemporary woman with the benefits of late-20th-century feminism. In just over five hours, this Emmy-nominated version of Barbara Taylor Bradford's bestselling novel A Woman of Substance traces Emma's life from overworked Yorkshire maid to the triumphant 79-year-old matriarch (Deborah Kerr) of a vast business empire. Married twice, but only truly loving a man she could never marry, Emma devotes herself to building her business empire. Surrounded by a loyal few, including Irishman Blackie O'Neill (Liam Neeson), Emma lives her life as a strong, uncompromising protagonist similar to Gone with the Wind's Scarlett O'Hara in a social environment reminiscent of Upstairs, Downstairs. Her life is a sort of feminist retrospective on the social issues of 1890s-to-1930s England--poverty, illegitimate children, illness, anti-Semitism, World War I, whether to marry for security or passion, the role of women in the workplace, and such--making A Woman of Substance a historical and inspiring film to watch. Hold the Dream The love of her life was there all along, she just didn't know it. As sequels go, Hold the Dream is a little like the sequel to Gone with the Wind: it's not devoid of merit, but it's not as captivating or enthralling as the original. Paula Fairley (Jenny Seagrove) inherits and runs the retail empire built by her grandmother, Emma Harte (Deborah Kerr). This somewhat lackluster tale of dutiful, hard-working Harte versus undeserving, greedy heirs set in the rather sterile world of 1980s New York City penthouses and English country manors lacks both its precursor's production budget and inspiring poor-girl-makes-good conviction. On the other hand, the love story between Paula and Shane (7th Heaven's Stephen Collins) manages to transcend the miniseries' weaknesses. Overcoming obstacles, tragedy, and deceit on numerous fronts, Paula remains driven by her sense of duty and business acumen. Finally learning that she cannot live on work and her grandmother's dream alone, Paula slowly warms to the possibility of true love. Her most loyal supporter and lifelong friend Shane helps her see that her own dreams can be the most rewarding. Wonderful performances by Seagrove and Collins make Hold the Dream a heartwarming tale about a powerful businesswoman learning to look beyond the bottom line and accept the love of a man who has loved her in silence her whole life. To Be the Best In the close of the trilogy, To Be the Best, Paula (Lindsay Wagner) comes into her own as a woman, mother, wife, and businesswoman. While not as captivating as the first parts of the trilogy, To Be the Best offers a satisfying close to the story and has its strengths, including a standout performance from Academy Award® winner Anthony Hopkins, who plays Paula's chief of security. Thanks to Hopkins's performance, what might otherwise have seemed like a long-lost episode of Dynasty is also part espionage thriller. As Paula gets inveigled into a series of compromising business situations in Hong Kong, it is her dapper and debonair chief of security who repeatedly saves the day. --Tara Chace

Amazon.comMove over, Mr. Darcy, A&E has a new heartthrob. He's third lieutenant Horatio Hornblower (Ioan Gruffudd reprising his star-making role), C.S. Forester's swashbuckling hero of the high seas. Devotees of the original Emmy Award-winning miniseries will want to "have at" this boxed set containing two feature-length episodes in which the dashing Hornblower and crew engage in "foolhardy actions, rash judgments, and irresponsible adventures." "Mutiny" finds our young hero awaiting trial for "black bloody mutiny" against a once distinguished, but increasingly unhinged Captain Sawyer (David Warner). "It was for the good of the service," Hornblower insists to his mentor, Sir Edward Pellew (Robert Lindsay). "We were headed for disaster." Hornblower relates the events that led him to a Kingston, Jamaica, prison cell. In "Retribution," Hornblower's trial unfolds, and the events surrounding the mutiny are further revealed: Captain Sawyer is detained in a straitjacket, disgruntled crew members desert, dithering acting captain Butland assumes command, and Hornblower leads a surprise attack on a Spanish fort. Meanwhile, the judges look for a scapegoat "to take away the smell." Maritime buffs will have a merry time, with all the shipboard intrigue and skirmishes. Like the "hot shot" that disables an escaping enemy vessel, this boxed set will be "a palpable hit." --Donald Liebenson

DescriptionIoan Gruffudd, Justine Waddell and Charlotte Rampling star in this adaptation of Charles Dickens' enduring classic Great Expectations, the story of a young orphan named Pip who lives with his sister and her blacksmith husband, Joe. One day Pip is sent to play at the residence of Miss Havisham, a frightening, elderly woman who seems locked in the past. She wears ancient bridal attire and never moves from the dusty upper rooms of her home. Miss Havisham's beautiful but contemptuous ward, Estella, makes Pip feel appallingly inferior, creating in him a desire to better himself—changing his life forever. But despite his efforts to improve himself, the frustrated Pip seems destined to remain Joe's apprentice. Until one day a lawyer calls to inform Pip that he has "great expectations:" Pip is to be released form his apprenticeship and educated in London as a gentleman! The benefactor who has made this life transformation possible, however, wishes to remain anonymous. Amazon.comThis capable and intelligent adaptation of Charles Dickens's classic novel is one in a long line of Great Expectations put to film. But this two-part drama distinguishes itself with its faithfulness to the book and outstanding performances by the principal cast. Ioan Gruffudd plays the adult Pip, an orphan who lives with his sister and her kindly blacksmith husband. Pip's life changes when he is sent for by Miss Haversham (Charlotte Rampling), an eccentric and wealthy spinster who wears only her bridal gown, which she was wearing when she was left at the altar years before. Introduced to Estella (played later as a woman by Justine Waddell), Miss Haversham's contemptuous ward, Pip falls in love with the girl and spends the remainder of his youth attempting to be good enough for her--a state of affairs that suddenly seems possible when a mysterious benefactor makes Pip's education as a London gentleman possible. Gruffudd is a fine choice for the central character, and his naturally intense expression underscores Pip's problems with insecurity and sense of deservedness. Waddell is an appropriately solipsistic Estella, slightly reminiscent of Vivien Leigh, and Rampling's casting is an unexpected but terrific move on the filmmaker's part. The veteran actress's career-long air of mystery, vague suffering, and intense sexuality bring a potent power to Miss Haversham's baleful looks. Dickens would be proud of this one. --Tom Keogh

Product DescriptionMini series Studio: Mpi Home Video Release Date: 08/31/2004 Starring: Robert Mitchum Hart Cochner Run time: 690 minutes Amazon.comThe second half of this massive miniseries covers events from the last two years of World War II with members of our fictitious family--the Henrys--scattered throughout the world. Pariah "Pug" Henry (Robert Mitchum) visits Russia and England as an advisor--and proposes to his much-younger lover, Pamela (Victoria Tennant)--before retuning to the Pacific theater to join his son Byron (Hart Bochner), a submariner, in battling the Japanese. Meanwhile, Byron's wife, Natalie (Jane Seymour), and her uncle (John Gielgud) continue their harrowing plight, starting in the "Paradise Ghetto" and leading to the Auschwitz concentration camp. This half--11.5 hours--aired on ABC in May 1989, six months after the first half. Unfortunately there is no kinetic battle sequence like the first half's Midway clash to absorb the viewer. Director Dan Curtis relies more on newsreel footage (and the sometimes heavy-handedness of narrator William Woodson) to cover large events. To compensate, the filmmakers give inordinate screen time to the conspiracy to kill Hitler (Steven Berkoff) by his inner circle. Like in Herman Wouk's novel, Hitler's decision to eliminate the Jews is the backbone of the entire series and the film's steely reenactments of these events--an amazing achievement for network television--is quite harrowing. Authenticity (filming at Auschwitz) plus ace performances (Seymour has been rarely better, Gielgud is outstanding) combine for a powerful statement, although the whole production is sometimes weighed down by the soap-opera elements of the Henrys' lives. The original Winds of War miniseries had a higher caliber cast, which is missed here. However, a few actors shine in their atypical performances, including Barry Bostwick (who tied with Gielgud for the Golden Globe) as a flamboyant submariner and David Dukes as a desk side attaché who reaches new depths in the war. Although admired and very watchable, the series did not impact the industry as much as its predecessor or sweep the award circuit as other miniseries (Roots, Holocaust, etc.) did, although it did take home the Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries. The 7-DVD set contains an informative booklet, a CD soundtrack, and a disc of extras. Dan Curtis makes comments over 70 select minutes of the series (shown out of context), hitting the highlights of filming, a nice way of letting the filmmaker talk without searching for the commentary throughout the various discs. There's a new 30-minute feature combining new and old footage on the making of this massive production, and a 15-minute featurette on composer Bob Cobert. --Doug Thomas

Product DescriptionThis was a 4 hour mini-series based on scott turows best-selling novel. The suspense revolves around a corporate lawyer whose world is turned upside down when he is assigned to draft the final appeal of a potentially innocent inmate nearing his execution date. Studio: Lions Gate Home Ent. Release Date: 08/30/2005 Starring: Wililam H Macy Tom Selleck Run time: 173 minutes Rating: Nr Amazon.comBased on the bestselling novel by Scott Turow (Presumed Innocent), Reversible Errors presents a first-rate cast in a penetrating look at the death penalty. The made-for-TV movie begins in 1991 when small-time thief Rommy "Squirrel" Gandolph (Glen Plummer) is convicted of triple homicide and sentenced to death. Larry Starczek (Tom Selleck), the detective on the case, also happens to be involved with prosecuting attorney Muriel Wynn (Monica Potter). Seven years later, he's still single, she's married, and her old colleague, attorney Arthur Raven (William H. Macy), is assigned to Gandolph's final appeal. Former judge Gillian Sullivan (Felicity Huffman), who presided over Gandolph's trial (and has since done time for bribery) becomes his unlikely ally. Product DescriptionAn all-new adaptation of john galworthys classic tale of a rich & powerful english family rocked by sexial jealousies infidelities & the turbulent transition to the modern age. Studio: Acorn Media Release Date: 10/08/2002 Starring: Damain Lewis Ioan Gruffudd Run time: 426 minutes Amazon.comGranada Television's adaptation of The Forsyte Saga achieved the seemingly impossible in spring 2002, matching the BBC's 35-year-old black-and-white classic version with a richly cast and superbly directed take on John Galsworthy's first two novels. The success of these six 90-minute episodes proved that despite the current emphasis on miniseries and dramas developed around the hot actor of the moment, our appetite--and attention span--still craves ensemble pieces that are given space and time to develop. It also demonstrates that nothing generates television gold like a compelling family drama crammed with lust, rape, class conflict, and the insuperable power of money. The Forsyte Saga is nothing if not superior soap opera. It could all have gone horribly wrong, haunted by the specter of its BBC predecessor--a television legend for anyone over 40. Instead, it succeeds entirely on its own merits with scarcely a weak link--from Stephen Mallatratt's taut and fluid script to David Moore's carefully measured, seamless direction. Risks were taken to banish the old ghosts, particularly in the casting. Damian Lewis's repressed Soames and Gina McKee as his ill-matched bride, the enigmatic Irene, are inspired choices delivering complex portraits of unhappy, damaged human beings who deserve our sympathy. In a sea of marvelous cameos and splendid acting, the top honors go to Corin Redgrave and Rupert Graves for their hauntingly sensitive interpretations of old and young Jolyon, as well as to Amanda Root for her increasingly exasperated Winifred and Gillian Kearney for her sharply intelligent and worldly June. --Piers Ford

Product DescriptionPatrick Stewart (X-Men, Star Trek: The Next Generation) brings his commanding screen presence to the role of Ian Hood, special scientific troubleshooter for the British government. A brilliant professor with a taste for danger, Hood has the scientific acumen, analytical skills, and passion for justice that make him the ideal expert-on-call in a crisis. Backed by his tough-minded bodyguard Rachel Young (Ashley Jensen, Topsy-Turvy, Extras), Hood takes on rogue cloners, ruthless polluters, resurgent viruses, and other menaces at the very frontiers of contemporary science. Created by acclaimed sci-fi writer Stephen Gallagher (Doctor Who), Eleventh Hour delivers high-energy investigations that will keep you on the edge of your seat. "Grips you straightaway." —The Guardian (U.K.)
Stills from Eleventh Hour (Click for larger image) Beyond Eleventh Hour More from actor Patrick Stewart | More from director Roger Gartland | More from Acorn | Amazon.comPatrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation, X-Men) brings his impassioned gravitas to the role of Dr. Ian Hood, an advisor for the British government who investigates science-related crimes and conspiracies in Eleventh Hour. This cunning, short-lived series combined the procedural suspense of Prime Suspect with the reality-stretching eeriness of The X-Files; regrettably, it only ran for four episodes and was canceled before it really found its footing. The first two episodes, both written by creator Stephen Gallagher, are the strongest: Taut thrillers that tackle hot-button issues (cloning and pandemic diseases), making the science accessible while cranking up the suspense and horrific images. The crisp writing makes the wary relationship between Hood and his Scottish bodyguard Rachel Young (Ashley Jensen, Extras) different from the usual partner banter. The next two episodes, about global warming and a miracle cure connected to political conspiracy, are significantly weaker. (Admittedly, it's difficult to make gradual global warming a source of dramatic peril, but the hammy dialogue and silly computer programs sink this clumsy episode.) Despite this disappointment, the first two episodes remain vivid and enjoyable. These are smart, spooky thrillers juiced by Stewart and Jensen's dynamic performances. --Bret Fetzer
