What time is it? Time for High School Musical 2, the sequel to the Disney Channel smash that aired on Aug. 17, 2007 and became the most-watched basic-cable show ever. School is out, and Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) are looking forward to a summer to remember, but Troy also needs to make bank so he can go to college. As it turns out, Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale), the self-proclaimed primo girl of East High, has her eye set on primo-boy Troy, and gets him a job at the country club her parents own. It looks great for Troy when Gabriella and the rest of the Wildcats are hired also, but when he gets preferential treatment from the club manager (Mark Taylor) and others, it puts all of his relationships in hot water.

Everyone's back from the original movie, including Zac's buddy Chad (Corbin Bleu), Sharpay's brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel), and Gabriella's friend Taylor (Monique Coleman). And the songs on the hit soundtrack often parallel the originals and are just as catchy: the Troy-Gabriella duet ("You Are the Music in Me," which is later Sharpay-ized into a rock version), the sports-flavored hip-hop number ("I Don't Dance," but this time on the baseball diamond instead of the basketball court), the Gabriella lament ("Gotta Go My Own Way"), the climactic stage duet ("Everyday"), and the mass-ensemble closer ("All for One"). But the sequel doesn't just stick to the status quo. Other songs include a flashy opener ("What Time Is It"), Sharpay's poolside feature ("Fabulous"), a percussive ensemble number ("Work This Out"), and Zac's solo ("Bet On It"), and the dances are even bigger this time around, relentlessly high-energy and often spectacular. In addition, the "let's put on a show" angle is only a subplot and the romance is now front and center--which means High School Musical has lost a bit of its innocence. But it's still wholesome viewing for tweens of all ages. Sharp-eyed Disney Channel fans will spot Miley "Hannah Montana" Cyrus as an extra. --David Horiuchi

Description

After what producer David Susskind called "the longest wooing for a part in a lifetime of dealing with stars," four-time Oscar winner Katharine Hepburn (On Golden Pond) made her television dramatic debut as the indomitable, overbearing matriarch, Amanda Wingfield, in Tennessee Williams' poignant 1945 memory play, which reteamed her with director Anthony Harvey (The Lion in Winter). "The Glass Menagerie" portrays a mother whose preoccupation with her past as a Southern belle and her unrealistic dreams for her children's futures threaten to smother her painfully shy daughter (Joanna Miles) and her aspiring writer son ("The Killing Fields'" Sam Waterston). Michael Moriarty plays the gentleman caller whose visit offers false hope and disrupts the family's precarious balance. 1973-74 Emmy Awards - Best Supporting Actor, Michael Moriarty; Best Supporting Actress, Joanna Miles.

Amazon.com

Katharine Hepburn, one of the great American actresses, stars in this film adaptation of one of the greatest American plays, Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie. Hepburn plays Amanda Wakefield, a faded Southern belle now living in a small urban apartment, where she suffocates her two children--her restless son Tom (a very young Sam Waterston) and her painfully shy daughter Laura (Joanna Miles)--with her incessant mixture of insistent cheer and guilt. After much prodding from Amanda, Tom finally brings home a friend from his workplace, in the hopes that he might strike up a romance with reclusive Laura. The result is one of the sweetest and most heartbreaking scenes ever written. Hepburn's steely will and sudden vulnerability make her ideal for the domineering mother, but the entire cast--including Michael Moriarty as the "gentleman caller"--is superb; Moriarty and Miles deservedly won Emmy awards for their performances. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

Raised by adoptive families and kept unaware of each other and their magical gifts until they first meet on their 21st birthday, Alex (Tia) and Camryn (Tamera) are the only hope of survival for their birthplace, the magical land of Coventry. After vanquishing the maleficent warlock who threatened them in Twitches, the girls focus on harnessing their magical powers, getting to know each other and reuniting with their birth mother, a powerful witch named Miranda. When a shadowy underworld presence seeks to destroy them, their family and their world, Alex and Camryn have to learn to combine their strengths to ward off complete disaster.

Amazon.com

Life is settling into an almost normal routine for twin witches Camryn (Tamera Mowry) and Alex (Tia Mowry) following their heroic efforts to save the magical realm of Coventry from the evil warlock Thantos (Patrick Fabian) and the invading darkness in Twitches . The two sisters are learning to use and control their magical powers and getting used to living as one family while they explore collegiate life at Waverly University and get to know their real mother Miranda (Kristen Wilson). Unexpectedly, the darkness returns to threaten Coventry once again and this time it follows Camryn and Alex into the mortal world. Protectors Karsh (Pat Kelly) and Ileana (this time played by Leslie Seiler) interrupt their nuptial planning to bring the girls back to Coventry at Miranda's command, but Camryn and Alex find themselves questioning their mother's decision to deprive her people of their magical powers as well as her insistence that the girls perform a spell to vanquish the darkness in two days time. Even more confusing is Alex's inexplicable conviction that her father Aron (Kevin Jubinville) is alive and residing in the very Shadow lands her and Camryn are set to destroy. In the end, Camryn and Alex must find a way to collaboratively use their powers to preserve Coventry without sacrificing their own convictions. Like the first film, an alternate ending leaves viewers with a shred of doubt, opening the door for another sequel. Also included is a 6-minute behind the scenes featurette. Description

Back to school's never been so cool or supernatural for Marnie (Kimberly J. Brown), her grandmother Aggie (Debbie Reynolds), and her family of witches in this latest chapter in the ever-popular series of HALLOWEENTOWN movies. When Marnie convinces the Halloweentown Council to send several teenagers to her high school in the mortal world, she even promises to give up her magic if any harm comes to them. But soon, Marnie and her new friends are in trouble and out of luck when the evil Knight Of The Iron Dagger appears. He's determined to destroy all things magical, and it's up to Marnie to save her high school, the human world, and her magic. For a bewitching good time, HALLOWEENTOWN HIGH is the perfect treat.

Amazon.com

Prejudice and acceptance clash in Halloweentown High when Marnie (Kimberly J. Brown) attempts to prove that humans and the supernatural inhabitants of Halloweentown can peacefully co-exist in the mortal world. Thanks to a slip of the tongue, Marnie's brainstorm to sponsor a high school exchange student program between Halloweentown and her own high school quickly turns into a battle to save the Cromwell family's magical powers and keep the portal between worlds open. An already arduous undertaking becomes even more difficult when the supposedly fictional Knight of the Iron Dagger starts haunting the Halloweentown exchange students right in the mortal world. In the end, it is the common mortals who, by demonstrating tolerance and a commitment to equality, possess the power to save the Cromwells' magic and the entire human world. This third movie in the Halloweentown trilogy focuses primarily on Marnie. Aggie (Debbie Reynolds), Gwen (Judith Hoag) and the other Cromwell family members are secondary characters with less prominent roles than in the previous two productions. Makeup and costuming is top rate in this Disney Channel original movie, the trolls and ogres are not too scary, and bonus games and activities are plentiful. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Teen sensation Raven (That's So Raven) stars as Galleria Garibaldi in the Disney Channel's brightly hued adaptation of the popular book series. Produced by Whitney Houston, Josie and the Pussycats meets Destiny's Child in the form of the Cheetah Girls. Granted, they're a quartet--including Chanel (Adrienne Bailon), Aqua (Kiely Williams), and Dorinda (Sabrina Bryan)--but, like Josie's trio, they hope to make it big and, like Beyoncé, they favor exclamations like "Cheetah-licious!" After the foursome gets off to a slow start, everything starts to change when they meet producer Jackal Johnson. That's the good news. The bad is that the attention goes straight to Galleria's head (and she was never exactly lacking in self-esteem). By the end, she learns there's more to life than fame and fortune. Aimed at the tween audience, girls are likely to fall for these tuneful teens, while their parents may find all the giggling and squealing a bit much. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

This contemporary version of the classic true story stars the acclaimed talents of Hallie Kate Eisenberg (THE INSIDER, BEAUTIFUL, and BICENTENNIAL MAN) as Helen Keller, and Alison Elliot (THE SPITFIRE GRILL, THE WINGS OF THE DOVE) as Annie Sullivan. Helen, who has been unable to speak, hear, or see since childhood, is increasingly difficult to educate, and her parents find Annie Sullivan. Although she is new to teaching, it is through Annie's strong will and unshakable faith that Helen discovers how to survive and thrive in the world through the eyes and ears of others. Your family will love this story of these remarkable American women.

Amazon.com

Fans of "Pepsi Girl" Hallie Kate Eisenberg will find her scarcely recognizable as the silent, sullen young Helen Keller. Blind, deaf, and mute, Helen is unable to communicate with her family except through temper tantrums. She is allowed to eat with her hands, tear buttons off the clothes of others, and even knock over the baby's cradle. She is barely pacified with candy and headed toward institutionalization when Annie Sullivan enters her life. Plagued with vision problems of her own and orphaned at a young age, Sullivan has the right mix of steeliness and empathy to turn her young student's behavior around and teach her language. Allison Elliot (The Spitfire Grill) disappears into the role of the teacher whose job is made tougher by Helen's imperious plantation-owner father (David Strathairn) and soft-centered mother when they doubt her authority and challenge her methods. This Disney television remake of the Oscar-winning 1962 original--based on William Gibson's play--lacks some of the emotional impact of its predecessor, especially in the climactic pump scene. Eisenberg often seems a little stiff as the wildcat Helen, but Elliott and the able supporting cast make this 88-minute update worthwhile. Ages 7 and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Before Madonna, before Marilyn, there was Josephine. Outrageous, shocking, sensational, she travelled the world to become one of the most loved, truly international stars. ' 'Sizzling hot.' ' (USA Today) ' 'A knockout!' ' (Washington Post)

Amazon.com

You know how it goes. You hear about what a sensation someone like Josephine Baker was in her prime (in her case, the 1920s and '30s), how she pushed boundaries in such delicate areas as race and sex, how she both thrilled and scandalized Paris with her exotic dancing and personal behavior. You have all these loose strands of legend and random fact, your curiosity is running high, and then you hear that a feature film is being made about the very subject. You watch, and then wonder: what was the big deal about Josephine Baker? The problem with this 1991 TV movie is the same as with a number of HBO films from the 1980s and early '90s: it isn't particularly well written, the production looks rushed, and the entire point is obscured in a whirl of biographical material that doesn't sufficiently develop into insightful, organic unity. What The Josephine Baker Story does do, however, is provide a reference point from which to begin an appreciation of Baker's life. A poor, African American girl from St. Louis, Baker found fame and wealth in Europe as a dancer whose partially nude, unbridled performances invoked wit, sexual liberation, and passion--without, somehow, seeming vulgar or obscene. As Baker, Lynn Whitfield gets into the uninhibited spirit of things, free with her body and enthusiastic about re-creating many of her character's performances (yes, the famed Banana Dance is a highlight). The film superficially suggests that Baker was celebrated as an expressive artist, a healthy force of nature rather than a lewd exhibitionist, but it doesn't go far enough down that road to tell us why she matters. Somewhat better is the script's contrasting emphasis on Baker's celebrity overseas and her second-class status as a black woman in America. In the end, the film's real accomplishment is underscoring how racism truly determines the course of an individual's life, and the way Baker understood that both from the vantage point of a refugee and a victim. --Tom Keogh

Willy Loman has spent his entire life believing he and his family are bound for greatness. Struggling day to day as a traveling salesman, Willy begins to lose touch with reality and drifts away into the past. Meanwhile his family, including wife Linda and sons Biff and Happy, attempts to cope with Willy's self-destruction and the still-lingering ghosts of the past. Arthur Miller's timeless Pulitzer Prize-winning play is brought to the screen with a powerhouse performance by Academy Award-winner Dustin Hoffman, who earned Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for this role. The stellar supporting cast features Kate Reid, Charles Durning, Stephen Lang, and in his first breakout role, John Malkovich as Biff, all guided by internationally-acclaimed director Volker Schlondorff (The Tin Drum) and a haunting score by legendary composer Alex North (Spartacus).

Amazon.com essential video

German filmmaker Volker Schlöndorff's 1985 production of Arthur Miller's most famous play appeared squarely and quite hauntingly in the middle of the go-go economy of the Reagan-Bush years. Miller's story, set during the post-war boom period of the late '40s, concerns an aging, traveling salesman named Willy Loman (Dustin Hoffman), who despairs that his life his been lived in vain. Facing dispensability and insignificance in a heated, youthful economy, Willy is not ready to part with his cherished fantasies of an America that loves and admires him for personable triumphs in the marketplace. But the reality is far more pitiable than that, and the measure of Willy's self-delusion and contradictions is found in his two sons, one (Stephen Lang) a ne'er-do-well gliding on inherited hot air and repressed feelings, and the other (John Malkovich) a mousy, retiring sort unable to reconcile--or forgive--the difference between his father's desperate impersonation of success and the truth. Schlondorff's remarkable cast explores Miller's rich subtext to great effect, though Hoffman--despite giving us a new model of Willy to contrast with Lee J. Cobb's definitive portrayal a generation before--is a bit insect-like and shrill in his approach. Malkovich, Lang, and Kate Reid (as Willy's long-suffering wife) are perfect, however, and the production is atmospheric and strong. --Tom Keogh

High School Musical has swept the world with its great songs, fabulous production, and positive role models. Now the TV phenomenon is hitting the road with High School Musical on tour! Most of the television stars will be a part of the cast, including Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman, with Drew Seeley (who wrote "Get’cha Head in the Game") taking the part played by Zac Efron on TV.

Amazon.com

To bridge the gap between the smash hit Disney Channel original movie and its 2007 sequel, the cast of High School Musical embarked on a North American tour in 2006-2007. If you missed out on the experience of hearing thousands of screaming tween-age kids (probably 80% girls), never fear: the concert is now on DVD. The almost-complete cast comes out to perform every number from the movie, plus numbers by Vanessa Hudgens ("Say OK"), Corbin Bleu ("Push It to the Limit," "Marchin'"), and Ashley Tisdale ("We'll Be Together"), all promoting their solo albums. It's not a stage version of the show--while there's choreography and video clips, the songs aren't performed in order and there's no plot explanation. And at 56 minutes, it's a bit shorter than the actual show was (missing some solo numbers and stage banter). But the kids put out tons of energy and continually thank their fans. Also on hand are Lucas Grabeel, who serves as MC, and Monique Coleman. The only principal absent is Zac Efron (who was filming Hairspray), but Drew Seeley (who cowrote "Get'cha Head in the Game" and reportedly dubbed Efron in the movie) does a good job filling in. DVD bonus features include four songs from the opening set by Jordan Pruitt, a nine-minute making-of featurette, an option to choose camera angles, and a half-minute peek at High School Musical 2. --David Horiuchi
