Amazon.comRecorded in 1994, Bob Dylan: MTV Unplugged is a brilliant, quietly impassioned performance by one of pop music's most significant figures. Fronting his empathetic five-piece band (Bucky Baxter excels on dobro, mandolin, and pedal steel guitar; Bob himself plays frequent "rhythm leads" on his Martin), Dylan performs four of his best-known and potentially most overdone tunes in the 73-minute show; but "All Along the Watchtower," "The Times They Are A-Changin'," "Like a Rolling Stone," and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" all sound great, with Dylan, as is his wont, re-casting both the arrangements and melodies. Even better is the obscure "John Brown" (written in the early '60s but apparently unreleased by Dylan until now), a driving, biting war protest song of the kind that made him famous, while "Dignity," a lesser-known tune from the '90s, is filled with great lines ("Met Prince Phillip at the home of the blues... said he was abused by dignity"), and "Shooting Star" revisits Oh Mercy, Dylan's best '80s album. Through it all, Dylan says nary a word, although he does smile and shake some hands (even removing his shades) at the end. And as good as it may be, this show is most likely different from every Dylan concert before or since, a sure sign of an artist in no danger of becoming irrelevant. --Sam Graham

Amazon.comHost Lori Trespicio is from The Real World. Instructor Kristin McGee is also referred to as "choreographer." The setting is a New York hotspot, and a cool DJ supplies the music. These are not promising signs if you're seriously into yoga, but MTV Yoga is surprisingly good. Advertised as a "faster-paced, upbeat" alternative to standard yoga workouts, the practice is actually quite traditional, based on the "vinyasa" (i.e., flowing series of poses) style. Beginning with several sun salutations, which are among the most vigorous sets of poses in yoga, it includes a variety of standing positions, lunges, twists, backbends, and so on. McGee knows her stuff, especially when it comes to breath instruction, the focus of any good practice; she also breaks down several of the more difficult asanas following the main 40-minute practice. The only real flaw is that not nearly enough time is allotted for warmup, but experienced yogis could do far worse than MTV Yoga. --Sam Graham

DescriptionIn "Flavor of Love," 20 single women from all walks of life, selected for their expressed love for Flav, move into a "phat crib" in Los Angeles and vie for his affection. With help and advice from Big Rick, Flav's gigantic body-guard and chauffeur, Flavor Flav will date all of the women, weed out the ones who are only after his fame and fortune...and in the end will choose his one true love. Amazon.comAt their peak in the late-1980s, who could've predicted that Public Enemy's hype man would become one of reality TV's biggest stars? For William Drayton Jr., AKA Flavor Flav, the journey began with VH1's The Surreal Life 3, which spawned Strange Love (co-starring the inimitable Brigitte Nielsen), culminating in Flavor of Love, a down and dirty version of ABC's soft-focus Bachelor. Instead of a tall, bland hunk, the prize is a diminutive 46-year-old with a unique vocabulary ("Yeah, Boyeee!"), an unusual dress sense (Viking helmets, sci-fi sunglasses, wall clock necklaces), and his own "Body Man," Big Rick. Over the course of this 10-part series, 20 women compete to become Flav's lady love. Seeing as the show is made for cable--and that this is the unrated edition--that means risqué language and revealing outfits are fair game (there's even a little Girls Gone Wild nudity from a few Flavorettes). Because Flav isn't good with names, he doles out some easy-to-remember handles. There's the moody Rain, sensitive Smiley, catty New York, etc. In each episode (except for the recap), he eliminates one to five contestants. Those left standing "know what time it is." Challenges include hot tub-speed dating, a fried chicken cook-off, and Vegas-style roulette. A cross between Jerry Springer and a rap video, the "celebreality" extravaganza is an explosion of hair extensions and false eyelashes set to a soundtrack of screaming and crying. Nonetheless, Flavor of Love pulled in the punters--the finale was the highest rated program in the network's history--and was renewed for a second go-round, indicating that America was "feeling" the Flav...and that the winner split the crib. Guests include Nielsen and Flav's Church-going mom, Anna. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

DescriptionIn "Flavor of Love," 20 single women from all walks of life, selected for their expressed love for Flav, move into a "phat crib" in Los Angeles and vie for his affection. With help and advice from his hip-hop buddies and a lady friend "on the inside", Flavor Flav will date all of the women, weed out the "gold diggers" and "video chicks" who are only after his fame and fortune...and in the end will choose his one true love… for the second time. Amazon.com What reality series is complete without booty calls, catfights, and accidental defecation? Sure, The Bachelor may have romantic locales and the promise of at least a few weeks of happiness with a tall and ridiculously handsome dude. But the second season of VH-1's raunchy, tacky dating series Flavor of Love has wild action and eagerness on the part of the contestants that borders on desperation. Never mind that the man all the ladies are fighting for is the diminutive Flavor Flav--once known as a rap pioneer for his work in Public Enemy, but best known today as Brigitte Nielsen's plaything from VH1's reality series The Surreal Life. Since the object of his affection turned him down in the previous season, Flav is back to select a potential wife from 20 contestants here eager to get their 15 minutes of fame by pretending to be in love with Flav. Both he and the contestants are much more aggressive this year than in the past and the implication is that if the girls want to make it to the next round, they'd better be willing to make some major nookie with him (and, in some cases, each other). The nicknames he bestows on the contestants add another comic book flavor to the show: There's Toastee, Nibblz, and the return of mouthy New York (back from Season One). And faster than you can say, "Oh no she didn't," New York is in the face of at least a few contestants she doesn't deem worthy of competition. Flavor of Love goes through the motions of being a real reality show, but it doesn't try that hard. It's obvious Flav is taking advantage of his popularity while he can and that the women are hoping their participation will help launch their modeling/acting/singing careers. But no one in their right mind actually believes that Flav will marry any of these unusual women. --Jae-Ha Kim

Amazon.comAnother superb live performance in a career filled with them, MTV Unplugged: Bruce Springsteen in Concert (Plugged) finds the Boss at an interesting point in his life, musically and otherwise. Working without the E Street Band (except keyboardist Roy Bittan) for the time being, having divorced one wife and married another (singer and bandmate Patty Scialfa), Springsteen had released Human Touch and Lucky Town, two "solo" records, about eight months before this November 1992 MTV appearance. Selections from those two underrated albums account for over half of this 114-minute set's 19 songs (including three that weren't part of the original broadcast), and while Bruce is still Bruce ("Human Touch," for instance, is a classic Springsteen song), some changes are definitely apparent. He has always been an impassioned performer, but he seems genuinely energized by the presence of Scialfa (can "Red-Headed Woman" be about anyone but her?) and his young new band, including guitarist Shane Fontayne, drummer Zachary Alford, and no less than five backup singers. These folks rock their butts off, basically, especially on a wild, extended version of "Light of Day"; there's even some experimentation happening, like the various sound effects added to "57 Channels (and Nothin' On)." OK, so there's no "Born in the U.S.A." or "Born to Run"; as far as standards go, you'll have to be satisfied with "Atlantic City," "Glory Days," and an acoustic "Thunder Road" (Live in New York City, another superb DVD, is heavier on the hits). Anyway you slice it, Plugged is another welcome addition to the Springsteen catalog. --Sam Graham

DescriptionDue to some random haggard circumstances, Volume 1 of the Jackass TV series isn't coming out anytime soon. But in the meantime here's Volume 2. Volume two of the Jackass series contains a random, haggard selection of segments and bits that aired on our crappy little television show. Remarkable moments in this half-ass collection include Chris Pontius masquerading as an American werewolf and creating panic in the streets of London, Johnny Knoxville sticking his arm right up a cow's butt, Bam Margera and Brandon Dicamillo taking the hockey gloves off and brawling in the middle of a café, Ehren McGhehey falling flat on his pink face while skateboarding blindfolded, and a bunch of other absurd stunts, pranks and queer misbehavior from our bumbling cat and crew of idiots. Amazon.comWhen Andy Warhol made his prophetic comment about fame, he could not possibly have anticipated the lengths some would go to get their 15 minutes. Consider Johnny Knoxville and his posse of merry pranksters. These are America's funniest home videos, a generous and representative sampling of segments from the notorious MTV series Jackass, which capture men behaving very badly, and very stupidly. Knoxville and company are mostly content to do injury to themselves and each other (their poor and battered groins alone must be eligible for combat pay). Other segments have a demented Candid Camera quality. In one, Chris Pontius dons a werewolf suit and runs amok through London. In another, two hockey players continue their "fight" inside a store. Throwaway bits, such as the popping of a blackhead, cleanse the palate between stunts. As one observer notes: "You'd have to be an idiot to try this." Watching this, however, is another matter. And by the way, there is no volume 1; go figure. --Donald Liebenson
