Reviews for the The Real World - Exotic Vacations MTV20 - Pop
ASIN : B00005KH2J DescriptionOn its 20th anniversary, MTV brings you an over-the-top compilation of groundbreaking music videos that made MTV the cultural touchstone now watched by over 300 million viewers in 139 countries. Songs: Cars (Gary Numan), I Ran (A Flock of Seagulls), Promises Promises (Naked Eyes), One Thing Leads to Another (The Fixx), In a Big Country (Big Country), Everyday I Write the Book (Elvis Costello), All Night Long (Lionel Richie), Hold Me Now (Thompson Twins), Shout (Tears for Fears), All Around the World (Lisa Stansfield), Barbie Girl (Aqua), Walkin' on the Sun (Smash Mouth), Tubthumping (Chumbawamba), All My Life (K-Ci and Jojo), Closing Time (Semisonic). 71 minutes. Amazon.comThe videos on MTV20: Pop (one of the four DVDs compiled by MTV to celebrate the channel's 20th anniversary), at least the earlier ones, are technically primitive by today's standards. The songs are mostly forgettable, and many of the artists are already forgotten. But still... go ahead and try to watch these 15 tracks without tapping your feet or singing along. That's because as silly as some of this stuff is--and it doesn't get much more hokey or dated than the mechanical synth pop of Gary Numan's "Cars" (from 1980, predating the birth of MTV itself) or A Flock of Seagulls' "I Ran" (a hit for the big-hair New Wavers in 1982)--every song here has an irresistibly catchy chorus and, in many cases, a video that is at the very least fun to watch (plus DVD bonus features, including background info on the artists and a "Pop-Up Video"-style on-screen option). That's not to say that MTV20: Pop lacks some quality material by significant artists, like Elvis Costello's "Everyday I Write the Book" (with an amusing video depicting Prince Charles and Princess Diana's domestic life) and Big Country's "In a Big Country" (an inspired, majestic anthem from '86). But who needs significant when you've got the Thompson Twins' "Hold Me Now," Naked Eyes' "Promises, Promises," and Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping"? Why look for deep meaning when you can party on with Lionel Richie's "All Night Long," Smash Mouth's "Walkin' on the Sun," and Aqua's "Barbie Girl"? File this one under Guilty Pleasures, and get ready to smile. --Sam Graham
Reviews for the MTV20 - Pop Celebrity Deathmatch: Greatest Hits
ASIN : 0738920819 Amazon.comIn creating MTV's contribution to the decline of Western civilization, perverse clay-animation wizard Eric Fogel took the same technique used in lovable children's specials and molded it into a twisted, bloody spectacle combining the best elements of professional wrestling, celebrity gossip shows, and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. It's no surprise his hysterical result became popular enough to spawn its own series of home video highlights. This clay-per-view special has legendary referee Mills Lane, tuxedo-clad announcers Johnny Gomez and Nick Diamond, and brassy interviewer Stacey Cornbred presenting as much muscle and mayhem as the rich and famous can deliver. Eerily detailed clay contestants include "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Cindy Crawford, Janeane Garofalo, and comedian Chris Rock, who attempts to feed Adam Sandler into a giant razor-sharp fan. On the minus side, the editing is fast and furious--at 45 minutes, the collection winds down just before it wears you out. The humor tends to be topical and relies on the same meat-rending joke played out in countless different ways: annoying celebrities-of-the-moment get all the agony they deserve. On the plus side, this one joke can be pretty darn funny. When snarling songbird Celine Dion starts yanking out punk rocker Keith Flint's body-piercings, you don't really need to know a thing about the players that isn't mentioned in the nonstop color commentary. Despite your higher instincts, you just start laughing... after all, as they say, it's just clay. --Grant Balfour

Reviews for the Jackass Presents: Mat Hoffman's Tribute to Evel Knievel/Jackass the Movie The Real World You Never Saw - New Orleans
ASIN : B00004Z4WJ Amazon.comThis collection of behind-the-scenes capers provides Real World fans even more of their favorite vicarious thrills, watching the residents of the Big Easy's Belfort House flirt, fight, and have fun. Mostly fun. Lots of it. In after-show interviews that seem designed to encourage dirt dishing, Julie, Matt, Kelley, Danny, David, Melissa, and Jamie spend most of their time laughing at themselves--and luckily, the laughter is infectious. Hidden-camera footage and crew bloopers show the cast members at their most hilarious, proving they're not only smart enough to see through the show's manipulation of reality, but smart enough to have fun with it. Just like real life, much of the accidental humor centers around bodily functions and frustrated sex drives, and some viewers might be turned off by the spy-cam montage of nose picking, or the mindlessly drunk Mardi Gras antics of the Belfort crew. But this show is really saved by characters who are just that--characters. Melissa's hysterical impressions of her own parents (who show up in person later) might be worth the price of the video alone. --Grant Balfour
Reviews for the The Real World You Never Saw - New Orleans MTV's Inside Fear
ASIN : B00005OCML Amazon.comPart Blair Witch Project, part game show, and part cure for insomnia, MTV's Inside Fear pits a team of uniformly pretty teens and twentysomethings against the forces of darkness. Armed with video cameras and walkie-talkies, our intrepid ghostbusters visit a series of creepy locales to find out whether they are haunted. Each team member has to perform a dare, which seems to consist of standing alone in a dark room while trying to look scared, but there's also a certain amount of shrieking and vague references to paranormal phenomena. Inside Fear includes interviews and footage not shown when the show was broadcast, but there are few surprises and no amount of wobbly camerawork can make up for the contestants' lack of personality. If you loved the show you'll like the video, but otherwise you'd be better off with a good horror movie. --Simon Leake
