Description

The first break-out superstar of the Hanna-Barbera canon, a genuine show business icon, and smarter than the average bear, The Yogi Bear Show: The Complete Series 4-Disc Collector's set features all 35 remastered and restored episodes from the entire series.

Yogi Bear began as a secondary character on The Huckleberry Hound Show (1958), but he proved so popular, he was given his own series in 1961. A conniver and a schemer, Yogi frequently proclaimed he was "smarter than the average bear." His gentle pal Boo Boo always pointed out that Ranger Smith wasn't going to like his latest plot to steal "picanic" baskets from visitors to Jellystone Park, but that never stopped Yogi. The Yogi Bear Show also featured Snagglepuss, a bright pink lion whose, "Exit, stage left" became a catch phrase among kids, and Yakky Doodle, a self-consciously cute little duck. More than one critic noted that Yogi sounded a lot like Art Carney's Ed Norton character on The Honeymooners, just as Snagglepuss's voice bore more than a passing resemblance to Bert Lahr's Cowardly Lion. But the sound-alike formula proved popular, and Hanna-Barbera used it many times.

The Yogi Bear Show: The Complete Series includes all 32 cartoons featuring each of the starring characters. The show's finale was a birthday party special with appearances by Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw, and other visitors from various Hanna-Barbera programs. Only a few extras are included in the set; the most fun is "Time Capsule Yogi," which offers the theme song, interstitial gags, and commercials. The Yogi Bear Show may not have been great animation, but it was an essential part of growing up in '60s America, and this set is sure to delight baby boomers who watched it as kids. (Unrated, suitable for ages 6 and older: cartoon violence, occasional ethnic stereotypes) --Charles Solomon

When the Children's Theater Workshop's Sesame Street first aired on television in 1969, it was a revolutionary new show aimed specifically at preschool children--an audience previously untargeted by television programming. Exhaustively-researched and tested on real audiences of preschoolers, this "experiment in kid programming" aimed to teach preschoolers the alphabet, numbers, body parts, rhyming, and basic reasoning skills while thoroughly entertaining them. Through the use of humor, the amazing puppetry of Frank Oz and Jim Henson, animation, the incredibly catchy music of Joe Raposo and Jeffrey Moss, and a fast-action pace borrowed from the television commercial format, Sesame Street was, and still is, more successful at educating and entertaining children than anyone initially imagined. What's more, the lessons learned by generations of preschoolers went far beyond simple school-readiness skills to include values like acceptance, cooperation, and inclusiveness because the urban Sesame Street was a place populated by people and monsters young viewers could identify with, where anything could happen, and where every ethnicity, generation, and species co-existed and interacted harmoniously.

Sesame Street: Old School Volume 1 1969-1974 offers a sampling of the first five seasons of Sesame Street and includes the first episode of each season in its entirety as well as a large selection of classic segments from each season highlighting some of the most memorable sketches ("Bein' Green," "Rubber Duckie," "Whistle a Happy Tune," and Super-Grover in "Telephone Booth"), favorite human characters like Bob and Mr. Hooper, and guest appearances by celebrities like Bill Cosby, Lena Horne, Jackie Robinson, Carol Burnett, and Jesse Jackson. Adult viewers will be transported back in time as they witness Bert's frustration with his ever-noisy roommate Ernie, chuckle at the antics of Grover and his demanding customer in Grover's Restaurant, and wonder if Snuffleupagus will ever show himself to someone besides Big Bird. Other well-remembered moments include pinball number count, the baker who inevitably tumbles down the stairway with a handful of cream pies, the ever-munching Cookie Monster, "Here is Your Life" segments, Bert "Doin' the Pigeon," and the inevitably grumpy Oscar the Grouch. Post-Elmo preschoolers and their parents will laugh, learn, grow, and connect with one another as they share this classic compilation of Sesame Street moments. Bonus features include the original sales pitch reel (introduced by Joan Ganz Cooney and hosted by Kermit the Frog and Rowlf the Dog) and a thick booklet rich with history, trivia, and a pullout activity section for children. (Ages 2 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Description

Unlike the outrageous fantasy plots of cartoons that preceded it, "Jonny Quest" drew on science and detective-style logic to solve mysteries and apprehend sophisticated villains. Viewers were transported to exotic locales as Jonny's dad Dr. Benton Quest tackled each new government assignment, aided by ex-agent "Race" Bannon, the Indian boy Hadji, family bulldog Bandit...and of course, his fearless 11-year-old son Jonny (voiced by actor Tim Matheson). Now all 26 classic episodes from Year One charting the fantastic exploits of brave and brainy Jonathan Quest are available for the first time ever, digitally re-mastered on DVD in a deluxe four-disc collectors set, featuring over 11 hours of classic original TV programming and newly-added enhanced content.

Amazon.com

Baby boomers of a certain age, and anyone fond of classic Hanna Barbera cartoons, might find the 40-year-old episodes in Jonny Quest: The Complete First Season an exciting blast from the past. Five years before Hanna Barbera made a comedy about amateur youths solving exotic mysteries in Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, the animation giant captured a more serious spirit from a different era in Jonny Quest. The series played on primetime television--a very big deal for animation at the time--in 1964, and was infused with energy from sundry pop trends as well as cold war paranoia and a prevailing belief in limitless technology (largely inspired by America's race to the moon). Part intelligence thriller, part science fiction, Jonny Quest made a child's adventure out of thwarting international espionage and sabotage with super-computers, state-of-the-art transportation to every corner of the planet, an apparently bottomless budget for building fantastic weapons, martial arts, and more. The fact that schoolboy Jonny, as well as his best friend, Hadji, and canine companion Bandit, were having adventures akin to those of James Bond was terribly exciting.

Young Jonny (voiced by actor Tim Matheson, later a co-star of Animal House and The West Wing) is the motherless son of government scientist Dr. Benton Quest. The latter conducts all manner of research from a remote island, where he lives with Jonny, Hadji, Bandit, and chief assistant Race Bannon, a rugged fellow who tutors Jonny but also provides muscle when the group is on assignment anywhere from the Arctic to Calcutta. The original 26 episodes (on four discs) find the team battling conspirators amidst half-sunken pirate ships in the Sargasso Sea (in the pilot, "Mystery of the Lizard Men," sans Hadji), working undercover to stop a Jahilipur manufacturer of fake gold ("Riddle of the Gold"), and foiling an effort to steal an experimental, "mind-numbing" drug (and passing off a Race look-alike as the real McCoy) in "Double Danger." (The last introduces Race's hottie girlfriend, Jezebel Jade.) The slow, deliberate animation (even more stiff than Scooby) can get a little wearing, but the uniqueness of Jonny Quest as a genuine adventure-drama makes this collection a must. --Tom Keogh

And you thought your childhood was tough: Twelve-year-old Dan Kuso continues his fight to save the universe in Volume 2 of the popular anime series Bakugan Battle Brawlers: Game On. For the uninitiated, Bakugan are monsters that can be summoned to fight using cards a la Pokemon; after Dan and his pals learn the secrets of the cards, they discover that an inter-dimensional villain named Masquerade also seeks to use them to banish the Bakugan to the Doom Dimension (which is as bad as it sounds). Volume 2 compiles Episodes 6 through 9 from the first season of the English-language version of Bakugan; "A Combination Battle" forces Dan and tomboy Runo to work together in order to defeat a pair of upstart magicians, while "Bakugan Idol" and "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" introduce a pop music sister act who challenge Dan while under Masquerade's sway. And in the closer, "Fight or Flight!" Dan calls on Bakugan expert Alice to help him in a battle against two boys whom Masquerade has promised to help. Though pitched at anime's typical hurricane pace, Bakugan does manage to inject a bit of character and plot into the proceedings, most notably in the boys' storyline in "Fight or Flight!" That aspect may make the show a little more tolerable for older viewers, though its target audience--kids under 10--will probably care only for the plentiful battles. As with Volume 1, no DVD extras are included, but each disc comes with an official trading card, which is probably worth more to fans than any supplemental feature. --Paul Gaita

Beloved in Europe for almost 20 years before they became a toy and marketing hit on American shores, Belgian cartoonist Peyo's industrious and charming Smurfs were a natural choice for Saturday morning TV; fans who grew up with their popular and Emmy-nominated network run (1981-1990) can now enjoy (and share) the first 19 episodes of the Hanna-Barbera produced series, which are remastered and compiled in this tidy two-disc set. Though simplistic by today's animation standards, the quarter-century-plus since their U.S. TV debut has not diminished the key ingredient to the Smurfs' enduring appeal: their unflappably upbeat demeanor, which helps Papa Smurf, Smurfette, and the rest of the clan overcome the schemes of their chief rival, the evil wizard Gargamel, but also a dangerous bird ("The Smurfs and the Howlibird"), a duplicitous genie ("The Magical Meanie"), and the Tribble-like "Fuzzles" ("Fuzzle Trouble"), and the giant Bigmouth ("Soup a la Smurf"). More benign issues are also handled with the Smurfs' typical can-do attitude, like Harmony's embarrassment over his lack of tunesmanship in "Smurphony in 'C'" or the hubbub caused by the arrival of Smurfette (addressed in "The Smurfette" and "Romeo and Smurfette"). And if the dialogue remains a touch on the corny side (especially the incessant use of "smurf" to replace any number of nouns, verbs and adverbs), it's delivered with good cheer by some of the best names in vocal talent, including Paul Winchell, Don Messick, Lucille Bliss, June Foray, Frank Welker, and Lenny Weinrib. It's unfortunate that the set's supplemental features don't delve further into the Smurfs' long history (or even into the TV series) with any detail; the Emmy-nominated 1982 primetime special The Smurfs' Springtime Special is the chief extra, while Smurfs: The Music Video offers tantalizing snippets of production sketches and promotional footage in a haphazard montage. Previews for DVD releases of Scooby-Doo, Tom and Jerry, and Looney Tunes round out the set. --Paul Gaita
