Product Description

Each episode of MONSTERQUEST is a mini-expedition to a remote, far-flung corner of the world. Science and technology come together to give viewers a greater understanding of these mysterious monsters bones and key pieces of proof are analyzed and submitted to a battery of tests. Instead of relying on the cliché grainy archival footage usually associated with these monsters, the series goes on-location with high-tech gadgetry (special cameras, listening posts, even underwater lures) to further the quest for answers. While the monsters may not necessarily be real, each episode does feature real scientists.

The 13 50-minute episodes cover: Kraken: the Real Leviathon, Night of the Monkey Man, Stalin s Planet of the Apes, Creature of Snellgrove Lake, China s Lake Beast, Werewolf of Bray Road, Jurassic Fish Monsters, Creatures from the Fourth Dimension, America s Loch Ness Monster, Man-Eating Birds, Giganto II, Bigfoot and the Hounds of Baskervilles.

Bonus: Short-Form Featurettes

The History Channel's fun, scary-scientific Monsterquest roams the world in search of real-life monsters. A current inheritor of the style of the memorable Leonard Nimoy series In Search Of…, the show digs up dirt on the best known urban-legends monsters. Or are they…real? Each episode, punched to the hilt with meaningful music and dramatic narration, serves up a well-documented (or at least much-rumored) freaky phenomenon. The titles of individual episodes give the flavor of the show: "America's Loch Ness Monster," "Mutant Canines," and "Birdzilla." This is not a skeptical enterprise, like National Geographic's Is It Real?, but an eager survey, complete with re-created scenes that visualize the beasties for us. One of the fun things about Monsterquest is that it introduces us to a collection of crackpots--er, witnesses--who have glimpsed the elusive monsters, such as the Wisconsin man who spotted a dog-creature and has since filled his home with lupine bric-a-brac. You're never far from some true believer who insists, "It looked like a friggin' werewolf." Naturally, there are also rational approaches: legitimate scientists examining bits of fur and tissue, DNA testing, lie-detector sessions. Snippets of historical monsters lend some pleasing shivers to the modern accounts. Watch a few of these in a row, and you'll feel like you're in the room with the UFO buffs in Close Encounters of the Third Kind ("I saw Bigfoot once!"), but the appeal is undeniable, especially for adolescent monster enthusiasts. And yes, Bigfoot gets not one but two episodes to his hairy self. Bonus wackiness: a 15-minute reel of unused footage and a few strange occurrences that happened to crew members while shooting. --Robert Horton

Of all the many documentaries that have been made about the Titanic disaster, this two-part, 192-minute film, produced in 1994 for the Arts & Entertainment network, remains the most thorough, authoritative, and fascinating chronicle of the Titanic tragedy. Written, produced, and directed by Melissa Jo Peltier and elegantly narrated by actor David McCallum, the film utilizes thorough research, archival films and documents, and expert testimony to span the entire history of the legendary S.S. Titanic. From blueprint design and construction in Ireland, to the ill-fated maiden voyage and the lasting legacy of Titanic's fateful sinking, no detail has been neglected in the film's meticulous description of events. Part 1, "The Death of a Dream," builds dramatic momentum to the ship's collision with an iceberg in the freezing North Atlantic, including detailed accounts of the agonizing two-hour sinking and the rescue of survivors. Part 2, "The Legend Lives On," explores the investigation into Titanic's sinking, the impact on later ship design and the dramatic rediscovery of Titanic's ghostly remains on the ocean floor. Parts 1 and 2 include abundant interviews with such noted Titanic authorities as Don Lynch and Ken Marschall (consultants on the blockbuster movie Titanic), and several Titanic survivors who have since passed away. The cumulative effect of this detailed film is a complete appreciation for the sheer irony, drama, and magnitude of the Titanic disaster. The James Cameron film was certainly entertaining, but this superior documentary proves that truth can be every bit as absorbing as fictionalized history. It's an essential addition to any Titanic buff's library. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

Explore the past and present of the rough-and-tumble logging industry in the first ever nonfiction series about the treacherous life of Pacific Northwest timber cutters, Ax Men. For more than a hundred years, larger-than-life characters, many of whom are members of logging families that go back to the time when the West was being settled, have spent their days among towering trees and powerful machines and their nights in outposts far from the comforts of civilization. Snapped cables, runaway logs and treacherous machinery are among the many dangers that threaten their lives and safety today. Follow four logging crews through a season in the remote forests of northwest Oregon and see how, plagued by mechanical failures, relentless weather and violent and unpredictable terrain, these men risk their lives every day in a constant struggle of man versus nature.

Amazon.com

If you've ever wanted to know the difference between a yarder and a yoader, Ax Men - The Complete Season One is for you! This 14-episode History Channel series follows the struggles of four logging companies working in the depths of the Oregon forests. The camera lovingly films gigantic machines lifting and yanking at enormous trees. The loggers themselves are full of salty language and roughneck machismo as they topple trees (the hearty voiceover declares that one logger "handles a chainsaw like a pool cue"). Unfortunately, the show drowns in hype. Trees aren't lumber, they're "green gold." Every setback could destroy the livelihood of everyone involved. No one would deny that logging is dangerous labor, but Ax Men hammers at this relentlessly, proclaiming every possible accident a severe threat to life and limb. After the tenth or 20th or 50th reminder, you suspect the producers are ghoulishly eager for someone to be maimed or mangled. It's too bad, because if the show had focused on the men and actually delved into their lives--instead of just making them look like one-dimensional jerks or heroes--their trials with storms, equipment failure, and human error could have become compelling. Instead, Ax Men shows the same footage of trees falling over and over (or maybe each shot is different; who can tell? How many different ways can a tree fall?), trying to squeeze a visual spectacle out of it. It's an insult to everyone involved. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

Get even closer to the truth about America's gangs in Season Two of Gangland. Rarely seen footage and unique access to the lives of both former and current gang members provide a solid insight into why gangs exist, how they operate, their increasingly destructive methods, and the alarming rate at which they're spreading to suburban and rural areas. Delve deep into the rich and bloody history of gangs in America, from the long-stretching tradition of the Asian Triads, to the full-blown motorcycle gang war between the Outlaws and the Hells Angels, to the growing occurrence of girl gangsters, as this season of Gangland goes to the darkest corners of America to infiltrate some of the most dangerous terrain in the world. Other gangs featured in Season Two include the Maniac Latin Disciples, the Texas Syndicate, Los Angeles' 18th Street, and the Mongols.

Gangland: Complete Season Two continues the History Channel program's focus on the gang phenomenon all over the United States. While the 12 episodes in this box set speak to the cultural and ethnic diversity of gangs in different parts of the country, there are some fascinating common threads. Among them, many gangs begin not as organized criminals but have roots in protecting a vulnerable community. A lot of gangs offer protection to individual members both on the streets and in prisons, testimony to their powerful reach. Finally, some gang members grow up to become repentant community activists, forsaking violence after seeing too much of it.

Aside from those sociological observations, episodes of Gangland offer collective portraits of different gangs in different cities. Two shows--"Crip or Die" and "The Blood"--tell the story of the longtime rival gangs Crips and Bloods in Los Angeles and their bloody war in neighborhood streets. Brutal and gruesome, the show tells a number of stories of arrogance and impulsive actions that took the lives of many innocent people. "Maniacal" is the story of the Maniac Latin Disciples out of Chicago, waging a war with rivals for drug turf in the city's Humboldt Park. The Maniacs are among the few gangs talked about in Gangland with a female membership as destructive as the gang's men. "Deadly Triangle" focuses on Asian gangs in America, including Chinese tongs, which began as protectors and enforcers for different industries (a garment industry tong, for example). "Texas Terror" concerns the Texas Syndicate, a very different kind of crime organization comprised of everyone from common street thugs to white-collar lawyers, all involved in the lucrative drug trade. --Tom Keogh

In the 1980s determined researchers began scouring the world for color film shot during World War II, and the result of their quest is spectacular. Seeing the war through the ubiquitous black-and-white footage has always made the experience somewhat distant, but in clear, crisp color, the enormity of the war and its horrors is startling and dramatic. Films of Nazi rallies are all the more disturbing; a viewer seeing the scene in color realizes the massive crowds saluting Hitler are no longer gray and faceless masses, but gatherings of well- dressed civilians. Color combat footage, from across Europe and the Pacific, is frighteningly immediate, and some of it, showing the wounded, the dead, and even prisoners being executed, will no doubt be disturbing for many viewers. Violence and destruction on an unimaginable scale is vividly put on display, as are smaller moments of soldiers smiling for the camera or liberated prisoners from the concentration camps staring in pained bewilderment. The episodes, produced by the History Channel, are introduced by veteran journalist Roger Mudd, and the narration for each individual segment typically contains excerpts from letters and diaries describing events close to those depicted in the film footage. The footage used is of a surprisingly high quality (much of it was shot and stored away, virtually unseen for decades), and it provides a stunning look at how the war appeared to those fighting it. --Robert J. McNamara

Description

The history of human civilization parallels the history of its cities. From Athens under the rule of Pericles to the Jerusalem that Jesus knew, the great cities of the past defined the eras in which they were built and shaped the minds of countless generations. These places embodied the knowledge and beliefs of entire societies within their walls—and yet due to the vagaries of history, these worlds are lost to us, buried beneath the ruins of time and memory.

Amazon.com

The monuments of the ancient world are virtually brought back to life in Lost Worlds, a fantastic History Channel series that combines historical expertise and computer-generated imagery to restore ancient structures to their original condition. Just as the packaging promises, this riveting 13-part series allows viewers to "explore the past rebuilt in stunning detail," following a format as richly educational as it is visually impressive. The 50-minute episodes are loosely grouped by historical epoch, beginning with the Christian emphasis of disc 1, with episodes focusing on "The Knights Templar" (showing the virtual reconstruction of the city of Tortosa), "Jesus' Jerusalem" (focusing on Herod's temple Mount, the Via Dolorosa, and other places where Jesus traveled), and "The First Christians," in which the cities of Tarsus and Ephesus are studied and rebuilt, along with the mysterious cave dwellings of Cappadocia, where some of the earliest Christian churches were built. Disc 2 moves to ancient Greece and Egypt, where new theories connect the remains of a Cretan temple to the lost city of Atlantis; "Ramses' Egyptian Empire" shows us brilliant revivals of the temples of Karnak and Abu Simbel; and "Athens: Ancient Supercity" focuses on 5th-century B.C. Greek structures like the Parthenon and the Senate.

Disc 3 jumps forward to the architectural mysteries of World War II, uncovering the top-secret, high-security structures built in the United States to support the development and construction of the atom bomb; "Hitler's Supercity" of Germania, the Fuhrer's Greco-Roman dream that never came to pass, yet remains evident in the massive structures of the Third Reich; and "Churchill's Secret Bunkers" beneath the streets of London, a fascinating network of underground tunnels used as an allied command center impervious to German bombing raids. Disc 4 focuses on the enigmatic histories of Europe, with episodes on "The Real Dracula" (rebuilding the remote Romanian castle of the notorious "Vlad the Impaler"); "Braveheart's Scotland" demonstrates how 13th-century Scottish culture was far more sophisticated than its depiction in Mel Gibson's popular Oscar®-winning film Braveheart; and "The Pagans" offers an in-depth history of the British Isles, where the pagan people built astonishing, spiritually vital structures like Stonehenge. A bonus episode--the series pilot--focuses on Palenque, the magnificent Mayan temple-city that rises from the jungle of Chiapas, Mexico.

In each of these episodes, historians, architects, and engineers are consulted as on-screen guides to our fascinating journeys to the past. The result is a detailed narrative that combines social, religious, political, and technological aspects of history, until the magic moment arrives when all of this information is used (along with detailed CGI imagery) to unveil these important structures in their pristine form--in many cases more colorful and architecturally impressive than anyone could imagine. All of this makes Lost Worlds a richly rewarding experience, essentially the next best thing to owning a time machine. --Jeff Shannon

JFK: A Presidency Revealed delves unflinchingly into the presidency of John F. Kennedy, examining the political crises, social unrest, and personal intricacies that marked his administration. What makes this three-part series stand out is its willingness to admit Kennedy's faults--in particular his troubled marriage, his infidelities, his illnesses, and his sometimes-excessive use of painkillers to cope with the pain of his bad back--as well as the missteps of his presidency, providing a strikingly balanced and human portrait of this all-too-often-mythologized president. Particularly revelatory is how the inexperience that resulted in the bungled Bay of Pigs operation led, in turn, to a far more skilled and careful handing of the Cuban missile crisis, in which the world came closer to nuclear war than ever before and perhaps ever since. A wealth of film, video, photographs, and previously unreleased secret recordings provide new insights into Kennedy's political and personal life (Kennedy was, as this documentary makes clear, the first president to really use the media to achieve his goals, launching an entirely new political forum).

Accompanying JFK: A Presidency Revealed are two episodes of A&E's Biography series--one a considerably more hero-worshipping profile of Kennedy that nonetheless provides worthwhile background information about his childhood and early career; the other a profile of JFK's father Joe P. Kennedy that explores the drive and ambition that set the entire Kennedy family on its political path. All in all, a valuable and informative document. --Bret Fetzer
