DescriptionGold. Silver. Land. Opportunity. But first, you had to get there! In 1869, one of the greatest building achievements in history the Transcontinental Railroad was completed. But for the stalwart settlers willing to risk it all, the American West was far from conquered. Travel on the thin steel ribbon of the railroad was a dangerous, even deadly, affair. Bandits, renegades and hostile tribes threatened every trip. Millions of acres of territory were virtually unreachable. To exploit these new lands, thousands of miles of new rails would be laid in the late 1800's, opening the west to settlement, commerce, and civilization. Explore the complete story of the Western railroads through rare photographs, spectacular re-creations and expert interviews. From the early gun battles and political fights to the engineering triumphs that finally mastered a hostile terrain, take an astonishing adventure fueled by ambition and daring! Modern Marvels
The Railroads that Tamed the West
This episode of Modern Marvels presents the story of the transcontinental railroads. Completed in 1869, the Central and Union Pacific transcontinental railroad united the continent and ushered in an era of unparalleled growth and development. The Railroads That Tamed the West chronicles the development of the transcontinental railroads and the evolution of railroad technology that made railroad travel inexpensive, safe and fast, resulting in an explosion of transcontinental travel and freight shipping. This program would be useful for classes on American history, Science and Technology, Social and Cultural History, Economics and Civics. It is appropriate for middle school and high school. Vocabulary• aspiring • atrocious • enticed • epitomized • expeditions • exploit • extricated • grandeur • incensed • ironic • nitroglycerin • pristine • replicate • simultaneously • terrain • tribulations • watershed Discussion Questions 1. Railroad travel today is relatively safe and efficient, but it was not always this way. In the early days of railroad travel, conditions, were at best, inconvenient, at worst, they could be deadly. What were some of the problems and hazards of early railroad travel? How were these problems eventually solved? 2. Even though the dangers of railroad travel were numerous and severe, people still rode and worked on the railroads. Why would people choose to travel or work in such dangerous conditions? 3. The name Westinghouse is associated in American business with electrical appliances, but the founder of the company, George Westinghouse, claimed his fortune with an invention he sold to the railroads. What was Westinghouse's invention, and how did it revolutionize the railroad industry? 4. George Pullman made his fortune creating luxurious railroad cars that catered to the comforts of the wealthy. How do Pullman's cars reflect the era of industrialization in America? 5. What role did the railroads play in the drama of immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries? 6. How did the railroads contribute to the explosion in western settlement in the 19th century? How did the U.S. government aid the railroads' contributions? 7. The continental United States is divided into four standard time zones. How did the advent of the continental railroads necessitate this system of standard time? Extended Activities 1. Imagine that you a passenger on one of the first runs on the Central and Union Pacific transcontinental railroad. Write a diary or journal that chronicles your trip and all the new and wondrous sights and experiences. 2. Create a trip itinerary for a cross country vacation before the development of the transcontinental railroad. What modes of transportation would you use? How long would it take? 3. Design your own luxury Pullman car.

DescriptionWorld War II turned the American aviation industry into a huge, high-tech giant. The war spurred the production of more than 300,000 warplanes, among them some of the greatest planes of all time: the C-47 transport (the "Goony Bird"); the rugged B-17 Flying Fortress; the B-24 Liberator, mass-produced by Ford on the world’s longest assembly line; the P-51 Mustang, the greatest prop-driven fighter; and the scrappy Grumman "Iron Works" output – Wildcats and Hellcats that leapt from the decks of U.S. aircraft carriers to maul the Japanese air force. This program includes modern footage of restored aircraft and history footage from factory floor to mile-high dogfights, capturing the urgency and adrenaline of World War II. Product DescriptionArctic ice is melting, sea levels are rising, and glaciers are shrinking at alarming rates. And the Earth is getting unmistakably warmer. But is this vast, potentially catastrophic, climate change the result of human behavior? Or is it simply the Earth s natural cycle of warming and cooling periods that have occurred since the planet formed? THE HISTORY CHANNEL offers an in-depth study of the science behind this controversial, hot-button issue.
Scientists explore the skies to examine the warming effects of the sun and dig deep into the Earth to study continental movement and the volatile activity at the planet s core. Experts speculate on how natural events, including volcanic eruptions and massive meteor impacts, have affected temperatures and weather systems over the planet s 600-million-year history.
Shot on location at some of the most breath-taking locations on the planet, and filled with dynamic special effects, A GLOBAL WARNING? is a captivating look at the Earth s climatic evolution and a study of the longevity of our planet--and man s future on it.

Amazon.comRemembering the Alamo won't be a problem after you've seen The Alamo, a richly informative, thematically unified set of four History Channel documentaries. The centerpiece of this two-DVD set is "Remember the Alamo," hosted by Dennis Quaid and produced to coincide with the April 2004 theatrical release of The Alamo, the historical epic (promoted here in a behind-the-scenes featurette) in which Quaid plays Gen. Sam Houston. It's a typical History Channel production, purporting to offer the definitive fair-and-balanced account of the siege on the infamous San Antonio, Texas mission on the chilly morning of March 6, 1836, between the Mexican centralist army of Gen. Santa Anna, and the "Texican" American rebels led by Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and William Barret Travis. Numerous "talking head" scholars pore over new and established historical details, examining the political and geographical circumstances that led to the massacre that left few survivors, and dispelling such myths as Crockett's fate (he was captured and executed) and the number of Mexicans killed in the assault. While some of the latest research remains speculative, the context of the Alamo siege is thoroughly examined in the other documentaries (previously issued on VHS) which fill out the set. Hosted by Kenny Rogers in Western regalia, two segments of "The Real West" series go into more specific detail about the battle itself and the history--from ruthless frontier justice to official law-enforcement status--of the legendary Texas Rangers. Most colorful of all, not surprisingly, is the hour-long exploration of the larger-than-life exploits of Davy Crockett, a charming opportunist who nevertheless earned his heroic status as a fearless leader who faced impossible odds at the Alamo siege. While some of the expert testimony verges on shameless hero worship, it remains clear that the Alamo, and the events and personalities that made history there, remains the most pivotal and politically complex turning point in the U.S. expansion of the westward frontier. --Jeff Shannon
