Product DescriptionStudio: Lions Gate Home Ent. Release Date: 02/05/2008 Amazon.com"He's just like E.T.," says a character of the fuzzy extraterrestrial stranded on Earth in the pilot episode of ALF. But the fun of this late 1980s family sitcom is that the sardonic ALF (an acronym for Alien Life Form) is nothing like the interplanetary innocent of Steven Spielberg's classic. With his whiplash wit and huckster sensibility, ALF (real name: Gordon Shumway from the late planet Melmac, Lower East Side) enters the lives of the Tanner family as a fully formed rascal whose spacecraft crashes into their garage one night. Worried that the feds will chop ALF up for research purposes, the Tanners--father Willie (Max Wright), a cautious civil servant who doesn't like a lot of fuss at home; wife Kate (Anne Shedeen), and kids Lynn (Andrea Elson) and Brian (Benji Gregory)--reluctantly take ALF in like a shambling, profligate uncle who cracks wise despite having fallen on hard times. There is a touch of darkness to ALF that inspires some interesting episodes. While most of season 1's episodes find the Tanners and their permanent guest struggling with compatibility, certain stories are sharper for indulging a little black comedy. "Looking for Lucky," for instance, finds Willie and Kate assuming that ALF--who is quite open about his fondness for eating cats--made a snack out of the family kitty. In "Pennsylvania 6-5000," Willie is accused of being a terrorist after ALF uses his host's ham radio to contact Air Force One. One of the best episodes, "Wild Thing" (written by David Silverman, later a co-producer on The Simpsons), is a nutty burlesque in which ALF asks the Tanners to lock him in a crate while he undergoes a 24-hour madness peculiar to Melmac-ians. After he escapes, chaos ensues in the community as cats disappear, a gorilla is freed at the zoo, and Willie--looking for ALF--prowls the streets in his pajamas. Fans of Jerry Stahl's book Permanent Midnight: A Memoir, in which the Hollywood writer describes working on ALF while supporting a severe drug habit, will be interested in his season 1 scripts, particularly the surreal "La Cucaracha," in which ALF and Willie do battle with a car-size cockroach. --Tom Keogh

DescriptionVarious Amazon.comBroadcast in 1991, the third season of The Simpsons contains a host of candidates for "Best Simpsons Episode Ever." Homer is in such good form throughout that a reasonable case can be made that he has superseded the importance of his Greek namesake in the annals of culture and civilization. The opener, "Stark Raving Dad," for instance, features a guest appearance by an uncredited Michael Jackson, who plays an obese white inmate whom Homer meets while confined to a mental institution. Other standout episodes include "Like Father, Like Clown," in which Krusty reveals he is estranged from his Rabbi father; this is The Simpsons at the height of its powers, mature, ironic, erudite, and touching while bristling with slapstick and Bart-inspired cheek. "Flaming Moe's" features Aerosmith and sees Homer invent a cocktail that desperate, sleazy bartender Moe steals from him. "Radio Bart" is another demonstration of the series' knack for cultural references, parodying the Billy Wilder movie Ace in the Hole. Finally, there's "Brother Can You Spare Two Dimes," in which Danny DeVito reprises his role as Homer's brother, regaining the fortune Homer lost him by inventing a Baby Translator. Immensely enjoyable at any level, this third year demonstrates conclusively that The Simpsons is quite simply, and by a large margin, the greatest television show ever. --David Stubbs

DescriptionFamily Guy Volume 2 sees the return of America's most outrageous animated family with all 21 Season Three episodes, plus one never-before-seen episode - "When You Wish Upon A Weinstein" banned from TV, and only available in this collection! In this hilarious final volume, the Griffin family faces all-new dilemmas, including Brian's unintentional foray into directing porn, Stewie's rants on national TV, Meg's date with a nudist and Lois' Yuletide insanity. Meanwhile, Peter is surprised to discover Lois was once a groupie, and his son, Chris, is more "endowed" than he is. Amazon.comThe third and final season of Seth MacFarlane's late, lamented Family Guy finds television's most dysfunctional cartoon family even more animated than usual. As MacFarlane notes in a bonus segment about the controversial series' censorship battles, he was inspired to go for broke, thinking that the series, already juggled like a hot potato in the schedule (at one point, it aired opposite the mighty Friends), had been cancelled. Just as Spinal Tap walked the fine line between "clever and stupid," so did Family Guy gleefully mock the line between "edgy and offensive." Case in point is this set's holy grail: "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein," not aired during the series' original run, in which clueless Rhode Island patriarch Peter Griffin is convinced that if his lumpen son is to be rich and successful, he must become Jewish. Like The Simpsons, Family Guy lends itself to multiple viewings to catch each densely packed episode's way-inside "one-percenter" gags (so-called by the creators because that is the percent of the audience who will get them), scattershot pop-culture references, surreal leaps, and gratuitous pot shots at everyone from, predictably, Oprah, Kevin Costner, and Bill Cosby to, unpredictably, Rita Rudner. Also like their Springfield counterparts, this series benefits from a great ensemble voice cast, with surprising contributions from a no-less-stellar roster of guest stars. Yes, that's actually Kelly Ripa as her "real" self, a heart-devouring alien in "Family Guy Viewer Mail #1," and June Foray popping in as Rocky the Flying Squirrel in "Brian Does Hollywood." Family Guy's stock has recently risen with its addition to Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" lineup, a much better fit than prime time. To see Peter invite Charles Manson to a party for Sharon Tate ("but only if you don't embarrass me") is to marvel how much of this ever got on the air. Happily, it is on DVD. --Donald Liebenson

Product DescriptionThe entire fifth season of the animated television show, The Simpsons. No Track Information Available Media Type: DVD Artist: SIMPSONS Title: SEASON 5 Street Release Date: 08/15/2006 Domestic Genre: TELEVISION Amazon.comSixteen seasons (and counting) of pop culture-rocking brilliance, the first four of which have already been gloriously archived on DVD. But in the words of Krusty the Clown: What has The Simpsons done for me lately? Well, how about all 22 episodes of season 5, each accompanied by commentary, deleted scenes, and other encyclopedic extras that hopelessly devoted Simpsons fans crave, no, demand? Season 5 is perhaps not as classics-packed as the third and fourth seasons, but no self-respecting Simpsons fan should be without the episodes "Homer's Barbershop Quartet," featuring George Harrison, "Cape Feare," one of Sideshow Bob's (and guest voice Kelsey Grammer's) finest half-hours, "Rosebud," "Springfield (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling)," and "Bart Gets Famous," with the Springfield-sweeping catchphrase "I didn't do it." Plus, the star power this season is impressive: Michelle Pfeiffer as Homer's comely, donut-loving co-worker in "The Last Temptation of Homer," Albert Brooks as a self-help guru who unleashes "Bart's Inner Child," Kathleen Turner as the creator of Malibu Stacy in "Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy," and, as themselves, the Ramones ("Rosebud"), James Woods ("Homer and Apu"), Buzz Aldrin ("Deep Space Homer"), and even Robert Goulet ("Springfield"). But it is the writers and the core ensemble cast who exhibit, to quote "Deep Space Homer," "the right... What's that stuff?" Series milestones include the first appearance of yokel Cletus in "Bart Gets an Elephant," and Maggie's infant nemesis, The Baby with One Eyebrow in "Sweet Seymour Skinner's Badasssss Song," which also happens to be The Simpsons' 100th episode. Add in a very good "Treehouse of Horror" episode, (which outs Ned Flanders as the Devil and Marge as the head vampire), and one Emmy-nominated musical extravaganza ("Who Needs the Quick-E-Mart" from "Homer and Apu"), and you have a Simpsons season that's not just great, it's DVD-box-set great. --Donald Liebenson

DescriptionTake a working-class guy in a working class job with working class friends and what you get is comedy that really works: Seasons One and Two of George Lopez. The talented comic plays assembly-line worker George Lopez, who brings a blue-collar outlook (and laughs) to a white-collar job when he's promoted to management. Make George's casa su casa and meet his loving wife (Constance Marie) and kids (Masiela Lusha and Luis Armand Garcia) and his not-so-loving mom (Belita Moreno). DVD Features: Featurette:"Inside the Comedic Mind: "What Shapes George's Comic Outlook, According to George and His Castmates" Gag Reel
Amazon.comTake one "everyman" standup comic, add a ridiculously good-looking wife, and throw them into everyday scenarios that are taken to the extreme and you get George Lopez, a pleasant and funny series with a winning formula not unlike that of According to Jim and Everybody Loves Raymond. Starring George Lopez as, well, George Lopez, and Constance Marie as his put-upon wife Angie, the ABC series debuted with a four-episode mini-season in spring 2002. Good ratings and favorable reviews got it picked up for the 2002-2003 season. Both the first and second seasons--totaling 28 episodes--are included on this four-disc set. The show begins with George being promoted from his blue-collar factory job to management. Much of the early episodes concentrate on his happiness at being able to provide for his family, but still not sure where he falls in the us-against-them polarities at work. One of the show's executive producers is actress Sandra Bullock, who has a recurring role as a klutzy colleague with depth perception problems. There are a few bittersweet episodes as George learns that his father--whom he had been told was dead--is actually alive and could be one of his former assembly line co-workers, Lalo (guest star Cheech Marin)--even though Lalo is gay. That the show's writers and cast are able to make this implausible scenario somehow ring true--and funny--is a testament to their talent. The language tracks are in English and Spanish, with Spanish subtitles also included as an option. Fans of the show will notice one major difference between the televised episodes and the DVD version: Instead of War's infectiously catchy "Low Rider" starting each show, the theme has been replaced (due to rights issues) by generic music mixed in with some Lopez quips. All things considered, George Lopez is a refreshing variation on the loving, but blemished, all American family. --Jae-Ha Kim

DescriptionThe unique relationship between Will Truman and Grace Adler continues to evolve this season in the adult comedy about two best friends - Will who is gay and Grace who is straight. Contains the complete sixth season. Amazon.com The year 2004 marked the end of Sex and the City, Friends, and Frasier, leaving Will & Grace to carry the torch as TV's reigning urbane sitcom, deftly balancing physical comedy with a sparkling wit that made even the crudest oral-sex double entendres sound like Oscar Wilde. But it's always a red flag when a long-running series flirts with the meta side. In the episode, "No Sex 'N' the City," Karen (Megan Mullally) and Jack (Sean Hayes) encounter Frasier's Bebe Neuwirth. "Talk like Lilith," Karen beseeches her. "We hate your real voice." "I will if you will," Neuwirth replies, to "ooohs" from the studio audience. On the whole, the A-list guest stars that appeared as themselves this season (Jennifer Lopez, James Earl Jones, Barry Manilow, and medium John Edwards) do not fare as well as those who portrayed characters. John Cleese received an Emmy nomination as Lyle Finster, the father of Karen's former rival, Lorraine (a saucy Minnie Driver). Their loony courtship provides the season with one of its most rewarding story arcs. Edie Falco (The Sopranos) and Chloe Sevigny (Boys Don't Cry) appear in "East Side Story" as intimidating lesbians who engage in a turf war with budding "apartment flippers" Will (Eric McCormack) and Grace (Debra Messing). Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite) appears in "Last Ex to Brooklyn" as the only girl with whom gay Will had sex. Geena Davis (A League of Their Own is at her endearing best as Grace's flaky, free-loading sister in "The Accidental Tsuris." But the Emmy-winning, lightning-in-a-bottle ensemble need no reflected star power to shine. "Strangers with Candice," which unfolds during an eventful evening out, is Will & Grace's version of the classic Seinfeld episode "The Chinese Restaurant." Over the course of a dinner, a stood-up Will has a "date" with an unsuspecting female patron, Grace hooks up with a former fling, and Karen engages in a prank war with her "nemesis/best friend," Candice Bergen (Boston Legal). The sixth season is something of a Grace-less one, as Messing was pregnant and missing in action in several episodes. But the remaining trio picks up the slack with rich storylines of their own. In addition to Karen's courtship, Jack becomes a student nurse and gets a new boyfriend (Dave Foley of NewsRadio and Kids in the Hall), and Will meets his future life partner, Vince (Bobby Cannavale), a policeman. As for Grace, her rocky marriage to Leo (odd man out Harry Connick Jr.) gets the season-finale-cliffhanger treatment. Will & Grace's ensemble got along famously, which makes their outtakes, included here as a special feature, particularly fun. Also included with this set is just over a half-hour of themed montages ranging from "Fashion Quips" to "Pop Goes the Culture." --Donald Liebenson

Description"THE SIMPSONS" THE COMPLETE SIXTH SEASON DVD COLLECTION arrives on August 16, 2005 from Fox Home Entertainment. Showcasing all 25 episodes from the acclaimed sixth season, including Part One of the season cliffhanger "Who Shot Mr. Burns?," Amazon.comThe classic to clunker ratio is still extraordinarily high, though The Simpsons' sixth season could give some devoted viewers pause. The show that takes cheeky delight in mooning television convention gives us "Another Simpsons Clip Show" and its first season-ending cliffhanger, "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" And, as does Bart in "A Star Is Burns," we should all feel a little dirty at the "cheap cartoon crossover" appearance of Jay Sherman (Jon Lovitz), designed to give a boost to the ill-fated animated series The Critic. But this is just beard-stroking tongue-clucking regarding a season that delivered episodes that rank in the hallowed The Simpsons pantheon, among them, "Homer Badman," in which lust for a gummy Venus de Milo, peeled from the behind of an unwitting babysitter, makes Homer the object of feminist protest and tabloid TV fodder, and "Homer the Great," in which Homer is discovered to be the Chosen One to lead the secret society, "The Stonecutters" ("Who holds back the electric car/Who made Steve Guttenberg a star?/We do!"). Several episodes take their inspiration from classic films and books: Hitchcock's Rear Window ("Bart of Darkness"); Michael Crichton's Westworld and Jurassic Park ("Itchy and Scratchy Land"); and Stephen King and Ray Bradbury ("Treehouse of Horror V"). This season's roster of guest voices is also especially impressive, including Winona Ryder as "Lisa's Rival," Meryl Streep as Rev. Lovejoy's bad-seed daughter ("She's like a Milk Dud," a smitten Bart laments. "Sweet on the outside, poison on the inside"), the late Anne Bancroft in "Fear of Flying"; Patrick Stewart in "Homer the Great"; Mel Brooks and Susan Sarandon in "Homer vs. Patty and Selma," and Mandy Patinkin as Lisa's future fiancée in the surprisingly moving "Lisa's Wedding." There has, of late, been a feud a-brewin' between fans of The Simpsons and Family Guy. Which show is funnier? Has The Simpsons lost it? Is Family Guy a Simpsons-wannabe? Hey; Can't we all just laugh along? Best to just marvel at another exemplary Simpsons season that, to quote Homer in "Lisa's Rival," delivers it all: "The terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles." --Donald Liebenson
