You wouldn't think masculinity was a rich enough topic to provide fodder for 25 episodes of a sitcom--let alone eight years of one--yet in almost every episode Wilson (Earl Hindman), the never-fully-seen neighbor of TV host Tim Taylor (Allen), spins out some new bit of earthy wisdom (fondly parodying the homilies of Iron John author Robert Bly), which gives Tim some skewed perspective on his latest domestic muddle. The second season of Home Improvement had a few recurring plotlines (Tim's show, Tool Time, gets a female producer, played by a pre-News Radio Vicki Lewis), but most episodes follow the classic sitcom format of introducing a problem and resolving it in twenty minutes, with plenty of punchlines along the way. Tim's wife Jill (Patricia Richardson) gets annoyed because Tim can't keep from glancing at other women (in this case, future Tool Time babe Debbe Dunning); Tim wants his youngest son Mark (Taran Noah Smith) to take karate classes because other boys keep pushing Mark around; when Jill gets a job at a women's magazine, she creates a spouse-compatibility quiz that inspires Tim to create a quiz of his own. The competitive urge--be it with his long-suffering assistant Al (Richard Karn) or over neighborhood Christmas lights--constantly gets Tim into trouble, culminating in a riding lawn mower race with real-life home improvement guru Bob Vila. Like most sitcoms, Home Improvement offers comfort food comedy; despite minor conflicts, the Taylors' family life is dependably functional and warm. Fortunately, Allen's humor has just enough sting to keep from sinking into treacly sentimentality. Watch almost any other sitcom and then watch Roseanne; it's startling how much more natural Roseanne feels. In the season opener, Becky passes gas in front her classmates at school; but that in itself isn't half as funny as the glee that Darlene takes in describing the event--the kind of viciousness that only real families can cultivate. That's the key to Roseanne's success: The utter believability of the relationships. Dan and Roseanne are a loving couple, but their affection works because their fights are just as potent as their flirting. The relationship between Roseanne and Jackie became particularly strong in this season, as Roseanne fought against Jackie's desire to become a cop and meddled in her relationship with her short-lived fiance Gary (Brian Kerwin); Roseanne and Metcalf developed an interplay that could be caring, playful, and bitterly jealous--and sometimes all three at once. The daily urge of parents to both coddle and strangle their kids was thoroughly explored, as was the fusion of need and contempt children feel for their parents. There is one misstep: A dream episode in which Roseanne goes on trial smacks of star ego in a way the show is normally careful to avoid--and makes clear how sharp the other episodes are. Otherwise, all the first season characters and their favorite hangouts, like Eric's basement and Vista Cruiser, are back. Granted, Red accidentally sells the car during season opener "Garage Sale," but it isn't gone for long (blame Hyde's "special" brownies). As usual, the 1999-2000 season--1977-1978 in the show's chronology--was graced by a number of 1970s vets. "Red's Last Day" has singer Paul Anka and Lyle Waggoner (Wonder Woman), "Halloween" has Marion Ross (Happy Days)," "The First Time" has Maud Adams (The Man With the Golden Gun), and "Holy Crap" has singer/actor Mac Davis (North Dallas Forty). Then there's Tommy Chong (Up in Smoke), who became a frequent guest, as Fotohut owner Leo, in five of the 26 episodes and would return for several more seasons. Yet another notable episode, "Afterglow," features a Scooby-Doo-styled animated sequence. By the end of the year, Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon) will have taken their relationship to the next level, Jackie (Mila Kunis) and Kelso (Ashton Kutcher) will have broken up, and Red will have gotten a job at the Pricemart--where he supervises Eric. The second season will end with a cliffhanger ("Moon Over Point Place") when Hyde is arrested (for something he didn’t actually do). Though the producers were clearly angling to extend the program's lifespan with the introduction of new characters, most notably Josh Meyers as new kid Randy, That '70 Show had clearly run its course by season eight. It simply couldn't overcome the loss of key players Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher (who appears in only a handful of episodes here)--the show's real heart and humor--despite stalwart support by Danny Masterson and Wilmer Valderrama (and the unbeatable duo of Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp), and the gags feel unfocused and cartoonish. Still, there are amusing episodes to be found throughout the set, most notably "You're My Best Friend" (Hyde has a disastrous bachelor party prior to his even more horrible marriage to stripper Samantha), "My Fairy King" (Jackie discovers her feelings for Fez), and the finale, which ushers the gang into the 1980s with an agreeable touch of sentiment. Supplemental features fall in line with all the previous '70s Show sets; director David Trainer provides commentary on four episodes, including the finale, while co-star Tommy Chong and Meyers get their own "Flashback" retrospectives to discuss their time on the series. Trainer reappears to provide a tour of two of the series' most famous sets: the Foreman's house and the water tower, while "Season 8 in 8 Minutes" is another extraneous montage of clips. Sure, plenty of recurring bits have gone stale--one imagines that star Tim Allen is looking forward to the day when he'll never have to grunt again, and hiding the face of neighbor Wilson (Earl Hindman) seems more like an obligatory chore than an entertaining game--but when the show focuses on the sitcom bedrock of marriage and family, it's not only still funny but sometimes even moving. The centerpiece of the whole season is a two-part episode that starts with an abundance of jokes about Tim's discomfort with female biology--then takes a jolting turn with the revelation that Jill (Patricia Richardson) has to get a hysterectomy. What follows is both comic and refreshingly honest as it captures Jill's anger and frustration, as well as a quietly touching portrait of how spouses support each other in times of trouble. Polly Holiday (Flo on Alice) boosts this episode with a strong appearance as Jill's mother. The rest of the season goes up and down, suffering from some pointless celebrity appearances (Morgan Fairchild, Jay Leno, Oprah Winfrey, magicians Penn & Teller) and stunt-casting (Playboy playmate Jenny McCarthy as a mechanic Tim flirts with), and the departure of Jonathan Taylor Thomas (whose teen heartthrob career never quite launched) throws off the long-established family dynamic. But even otherwise rote episodes have satisfyingly funny moments (in a Halloween episode, there's a nice bit of slapstick when Tim, dressed as a flying monkey from The Wizard of Oz, can't get his wings through a doorway). The comfortable interplay among the seasoned cast ensures that longtime fans will find much to enjoy. The ensuing outcry illustrated just how seriously its devoted fans take South Park. There is little evidence of sophomore slump in this three-disc collection of 18 episodes that continue the coming-of-age trials of third graders Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny. There is considerable shock value just in the episode titles alone, among them "Cojoined Fetus Lady," "Merry Christmas, Charlie Manson," and the infamous "Cartman's Mom Is Still a Dirty Slut." But mostly, the episodes are just--in Cartman's words--hella funny. "Spookyfish" is a creepfest about a killer fish, possessed animals, and alien alter egos (in which the so-called Evil Cartman is much nicer than the real Cartman) presented in Spookyvision, with pictures of Barbra Streisand framing the screen. "Chef's Salty Chocolate Balls" is a hilarious send-up of the Sundance Film Festival and the indie film scene that marks the return of Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo, and ends with the burial of Robert Redford in excrement. As always, hard-earned life lessons provide South Park with fertile territory for skewed and subversive social commentary. In "Chicken Lover," Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged is an argument against literacy. "Underwear Gnomes" makes a strong case for corporate takeover of local family business. It is difficult to respect Warner Bros.' "authoritah" with the scant DVD extras. There are no commentaries, but Parker and Stone are present to introduce most of the episodes, each of which they proclaim to be their favorite. But their incarnations as abusive retirement center entertainers and as the hosts of an all-bacon cooking show fall flat. Bring back Rootin'-Tootin' Trey Parker and Pistol-Slingin' Matt Stone from the Season One set! --Donald Liebenson

In the episode "Misery Loves Company," annoyingly happy newlyweds Robert (Brad Garrett) and Amy (Monica Horan) offer unwanted marriage advice to Raymond (Ray Romano) and Debra (Patricia Heaton) and even in-laws Frank (Peter Boyle) and Marie (Doris Roberts), who gives them a reality check on what marriage really is ("You plow through"). In "The Ingrate," Raymond pays tribute to Debra in his newspaper column after forgetting to acknowledge her in a speech, only to raise the ire of a resentful Marie. In "Debra at the Lodge," Debra volunteers at Frank's lodge, only to become an object of lust for the randy elderly members (this season, Debra begins to blossom as a suburban goddess in the grand Laura Petrie tradition). After eight seasons, we know these characters like our own family members. So, much of each episode's comedy is built upon our anticipation of how they will react to each other, as when Marie catches Raymond and Debra in an escalating series of lies or when the Barones share Thanksgiving with Amy's more uptight family, who, she observes at one point, "wouldn't yell if they were on fire." In one of the season's best episodes, Debra seizes on a rift between Marie and family newcomer Amy over thank-you notes to shift the balance of power from the manipulative and Machiavellian Marie (as always, a losing battle). Raymond is one of those rare sitcoms that stayed on top of its game during its nine-year run. This penultimate season is filled with classic episodes and priceless moments. The incisive and intimately observed writing, brought to life by the peerless, Emmy-winning ensemble, could turn on a dime from funny to genuinely moving. In "Golf for It," the season finale, Raymond and Robert pull an all-nighter waiting for a tee-time. Their conversation turns to the indomitable Marie, and which of the brothers will care for her in her dotage.
