DescriptionCreated by Steven Bochco (?Murder One,? ?NYPD Blue?) and Michael Kozoll, and featuring an ensemble cast including Daniel J. Travanti, Veronica Hamel, Bruce Weitz, Charles Haid, Betty Thomas and James Sikking, each episode chronicled a day-in-the-life of the cops on the beat, starting with the infamous morning roll call and ending with a recap of the day?s events. The first hard-hitting series of its kind, ?Hill Street Blues? garnered 26 Emmy® Awards ? including four for Outstanding Drama ? won two Golden Globes®, and is credited with inspiring beloved dramas such as ?St. Elsewhere,? ?Law & Order? and ?NYPD Blue.? Amazon.comDespite critical acclaim, Hill Street Blues could not get arrested ratings-wise its first season. Far from being careful out there, the superb second season did nothing to tinker with the integrity of this groundbreaking series to make it more audience friendly. Multiple storylines, overlapping dialogue, gritty language, and a pseudo-documentary style capture the palpable chaos and tension of what one character calls "the rat-infested, poverty-stricken urban reality." From the precinct-house shooting rampage that opens the season to a hijacked hearse in the season-ending episode, Hill Street Blues deftly walks the line between police procedural and personal drama, further fleshing out its gallery of compelling and colorful characters. Belker (Bruce Weitz) is still a growling mad dog who takes bites out of perps. But in one of the series' most memorable story arcs, he forms a surprising bond with the delusional costumed citizen Captain Freedom (Dennis Dugan), Public defender Joyce (Victoria Hamel)'s steamroller persona breaks down when a colleague is murdered and the case is thrown out because of a technicality. Other dramatic developments: LaRue (Keil Martin) falls off the wagon and endangers his partner, Washington (Taurean Blacque), during a drug bust ("Zen and the Art of Law Enforcement"); Goldblume (Joe Spano) gets personally involved in the case of an abusive slumlord ("Of Mouse and Man," featuring future Miami Vice star Edward James Olmos as a threatened tenant); Esterhaus (Michael Conrad) is still bedeviled by sexual siren Grace Gardner (Barbara Babcock); and Precinct Capt. Frank Furillo (Daniel J. Travanti, who earned his second Emmy for Best Actor) and Joyce bring their clandestine affair out into the open. Other ongoing storylines involve realistic depictions of police corruption and inter-partner race relations. Hill Street's second season fulfilled the promise of its auspicious first, and repeated as TV's Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmy Awards. No roll call of classic, trendsetting TV series would be complete without it. --Donald Liebenson

Product Description20th Century The Simpsons Movie (Blu-ray) Homer accidentallycauses an environmental catastrophe which could doom Springfield forever. Homer now must save the city and rescue his family. Springfield's usual characters and new favorites all turn up in the firstever movie length version of the hit TV show, 18 years in the making. Amazon.com The Simpsons had already ruled TV land for many years by the time they finally attempted to conquer the movie world as well. It was never any big secret that a Simpsons movie was in the works: Fox registered the domain name "Simpsonsmovie.com" in 1997, a full nine years before the film was finally greenlighted. When creator/producer Matt Groening’s creation finally made it to the big screen in 2007, it only turned out to be the biggest hit of the summer, raking in over $100 million gross in box-office receipts in its first week, before heading on to do over $500 million worldwide, proving that the best joke in the movie was actually played on the audience: "Why pay for something when you can see it for free?" asks Homer at the movie’s start. Naturally, all the trouble starts with him. When he adopts a pig ("Sir Oinks-A-Lot") destined for Krusty’s slaughterhouse, it triggers an environmental catastrophe, forcing the government to seal Springfield into a dome and destroy the city. While the family manages to escape and flee to Alaska, they eventually decide to return and help save the city in more-or-less classic Simpson fashion. As Homer’s joke about the audience shows, Groening and producer Al Jean are keenly aware that their franchise is first and foremost a TV show. Maybe a little too aware, as the movie fails to ever rise above anything more than an extended episode, and not even one of its best episodes at that. True, there are plenty of good jokes; the animation has been kicked up a notch to be particularly sharp and detailed; and there are some truly memorable moments such as Bart’s nude skateboard ride and the "Spider-Pig" song. But when the film finally materialized, the payoff for long years of anticipation turned out to be small as the movie failed to live up to its potential; it’s amusing but not truly funny. The Simpsons Movie leaves the impression that maybe the show’s writers and producers had already spent their best ideas on the best years of the TV show. Had it been made years earlier… well, we can only wonder what could have been. --Daniel Vancini Get to Know The Simpsons "Oh, so they have internet on computers now!" -- Homer Simpson | "I'd like to visit that Long Island Place, if only it were real." -- Marge Simpson (drinking a Long Island Iced Tea) | "Aren't we forgetting the true meaning of Christmas? DescriptionAs the fourth season opens, Hawkeye returns from a 3-day R&R pass in Tokyo to find Trapper has been sent Stateside. Hawkeye races to the airport but arrives just as TrapperÂ's plane takes off. Too late to tell his friend good-bye, he in nevertheless just in time to welcome TrapperÂ's replacement, Captain B.J. Hunnicutt. Once Hawkeye gets over his anger and disappointment, he realizes B.J. is a worthy ally and takes the newcomer under his wing. Â"The first thing you learn here, B.J., is that insanity is no worse than the common cold. YouÂ've heard of a military post? Ours is a compost. Only the wounded are new. The tedium is relieved only by the boredom. So pitch in, muddle through, pip-pip. Never mind the reason why, ours is but to do and not let Â'em die.Â" Then Colonel Sherman T. Potter arrives to take over command of the 4077. Not only are Frank and Hot Lips outraged that Frank has lost his command so quickly, but Hawkeye and B.J. know that a Â"liferÂ" Army commander could spell big trouble for them. But then a single reminiscence from Potter puts the docs at ease: Â"Had a still on Guam in World War II. One night it blew up. ThatÂ's how I got my Purple Heart.Â" Amazon.com One of M*A*S*H's best and must-own seasons marked a turning point for this Emmy- and Peabody Award-winning series. It would be the last for peerless comedy writer Larry Gelbart (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Tootsie), who developed M*A*S*H for television and served as the series' comic voice, conscience, and beating heart. But this old soldier did not just fade away. He concluded his tour with "The Interview," the stunning season finale and a series benchmark. This black-and-white episode, which he wrote and directed, features Clete Roberts interviewing the members of the 4077th (with the notable exception of Loretta Swit's Major Houlihan) about life and death at the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (a special citation to William Christopher as Father Mulcahy, who provides the episode's most dramatic moment reflecting on how the doctors warm themselves on the steam that rises from the patients' open wounds). Reporting for duty in season 4 is Mike Farrell as B.J. Hunnicutt, a welcome replacement for the departed Wayne Rogers. In the Emmy-winning season opener, "Welcome to Korea," Hawkeye (Alan Alda) takes the overwhelmed B.J. under his wing. By episode's end, he is drunk and addressing the insufferable "head twerp" Major Burns (Larry Linville) as "ferret face." The second episode brings a "Change of Command" with the arrival of Henry Morgan as Col. Potter, "regular Army," but compassionate and capable. The Gelbart years were distinguished by the deft balancing of comedy and drama (M*A*S*H is that rare comedy series that plays better without a laugh track, which this set offers as a viewing option). In the Gelbart-directed episode "Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?," a wounded bomber pilot identifies himself as Jesus Christ. Gelbart also directed and co-wrote "Hawkeye," an Alda tour de force in which Hawkeye takes refuge with a non-English-speaking South Korean family after overturning his jeep and sustaining a concussion, requiring him to talk nonstop to keep from losing consciousness. The departure of key creative and ensemble personnel would be enough to fatally wound a lesser series, but M*A*S*H would solider on. --Donald Liebenson

Amazon.com This hugely popular prime-time soap opera follows the exploits of the Carringtons and Colbys, both "oilrich" family dynasties in Denver, CO, as they accrue and manipulate power and wealth. Amazon.comIn one of this set's two episodes that are absolutely essential for Dynasty fans, Krystle (Linda Evans) and Alexis (Joan Collins) bring it on like "common mud wrestlers" in a titanic lily pond smackdown. This is what OMG looked like in 1982-83. So, where were we? (It's hard to keep track with these split seasons.) Steven is still missing and presumed dead. Jeff (John James) is beginning to show the effects of the toxin that Adam (Gordon Thomson) mixed into the paint used to redecorate his office. The "brilliant, beautiful, and conniving" Alexis is scheming a takeover of Denver-Carrington while trysting with Mark (Geoffrey Scott), Krystle's former husband, from whom she is not legally divorced. Sammy Jo (Heather Locklear) is back in town with a vengeance, a new name (Samantha), and her and Steven's son. The stage is set for more instantly addictive serial shenanigans between the feuding Carrington and Colby clans, and the innocent (and not so innocent) bystanders whose lives they impact. Over the course of these remaining 12 episodes, Alexis and Adam, her kidnapped at birth son, form an axis of evil to destroy Blake (John Forsythe). Steven, lo and behold, is alive and in a hospital in Singapore. In another series benchmark episode, "The Mirror," his bandages are dramatically removed to reveal a new face (Jack Coleman replacing Al Corley). Kirby (Kathleen Beller, the Anne Hathaway of her day), butler Joseph's daughter, marries Jeff. Good news: She's pregnant. Bad news: Jeff is not the father. Until that fateful trip to Muldavia, Dynasty excelled at season finales, and this Season Three cliffhanger was one of its best: an apocalyptic cabin inferno that traps natural born enemies Krystle and Alexis. "This is all your fault," Alexis screams. "Every time you come into my life something terrible happens to me!" Dynasty's third season was its highest-rated yet, and the episodes that comprise Volume Two are representative of the series' many guilty pleasures. Not to worry if this is your first encounter with Dynasty. Each episode contains helpful expository dialogue to get you caught up ("I'm not just talking about my obsession about Steven being alive after that oil rig disaster"). --Donald Liebenson

DescriptionKorea, 1950. They were a MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) unit stationed three miles from the front. Incoming helicopters full of wounded brought the horrors of war to them daily and sometimes bullets flew right outside the operating room door. Occasional hilarity and constant hijinks were all that kept them sane. Loosely based on real-life MASH unit 8055, life at the 4077 revolved around the day-to-day routines of Captain "Hawkeye" Pierce, Captain "Trapper" McIntyre, Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake, Major Margaret Houlihan, Major Franklin Burns and Corporal "Radar" O'Reilly. Through these characters, viewers traveled beyond the long hours and the horrors of the operating room to a place where friendships were forged, laughter was found and drinks were served.

DescriptionCountry legend and recent Broadway sensation Reba McEntire stars in Reba, a hilarious and spirited look at the "perfect" American family gone awry. The perfect holiday gift for every Reba fan. Amazon.comReba: Season 2 stays the course set in the first season, with sitcom star (and country music legend) Reba McEntire playing a divorced mom (named Reba Hart) trying to get her bearings after her dentist husband, Brock (Christopher Hart), leaves her to take up with his simple but sweet-natured hygenist, Barbra Jean (Melissa Peterman). That's still only part of the heroine's troubles. Her 17-year-old daughter, Cheyenne (Joanna Garcia), and the latter's teenage husband, Van (Steve Howey), are living in Reba's house with their infant, while Reba's younger daughter Kyra (Scarlett Pomers) is maturing at an unnerving clip and son Jake (Mitch Holleman) frequently loses out when it comes to mom's attention. None of that is as crazy-making, however, as Barbra Jean's naive overtures to Reba for sisterly friendship--when the new Mrs. Hart and Brock move into a house near Reba's, Barbra Jean can't wait to visit Brock's ex-wife often. Very often. With these new and reconfigured relationships fixed in place, the dust is settling in season 2. Now comes the really hard part: pinching pennies while trying to teach the profligate, clueless Cheyenne and Van that they don't have the scratch to get an apartment or spend money on non-essentials. Or interviewing for jobs for which Reba clearly has no experience. Or trying to hold onto Kyra's loyalty when what the girl wants is more of dad. The seriousness of these running issues speaks for itself, forming a strong foundation for a show whose humor is understandably biting without being off-putting. McEntire and the rest of the cast are consistently strong and funny, while Peterman continues to stand out in her somewhat broader performance. (Peterman's comic assuredness sometimes reminds one of Lucille Ball.) Lots of life lessons in this show, but a lot of disciplined if gentle comedy as well. --Tom Keogh

DescriptionFlash on back to the swinging '70s where there's a whole lotta love going around in the gang's senior year. Jackie is secretly making out with Hyde even though she still has the hots for Kelso. But Eric and Donna soon have a bigger secret after Eric gives her a diamond ring. Even Fez finally finds love at the DMV. But it's the job fair that has everyone thinking of life after high school. Kelso toys with the idea of becoming a cop, while Donna and Eric plan on moving in together. But it's Fez's future that may be the most uncertain after he learns he's being deported! Amazon.comAfter the somewhat dramatic conclusion of That '70s Show's fourth season, which saw Donna (Laura Prepon) and Kelso (Ashton Kutcher) head to California, the fifth season (2002-2003) opens on a cheerier note, with Donna and Eric (Topher Grace) reuniting after the latter also travels West to declare his affections. Their dramatic progress of their relationship forms the crux of season 5, but if that sounds too heavy for you, don't worry--there are plenty of wacky situations on hand involving Fez (Wilmer Valderamma), Hyde (Danny Masterson), and the rest of the retro gang. The Eric/Donna story arc moves quickly from a promise ring ("Ramble On") to an unplanned engagement ("Hot Dog") and the discovery of said union by Eric's parents, Red (the always-terrific Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp, who is consistently excellent), which results in considerable rancor in the Foreman household. Eventually, marriage appears to be the destination for Eric and Donna, but first, there's graduation to deal with ("Celebration Day"), not to mention Hyde's blossoming affection for Jackie (Mila Kunis), an apparent pregnancy for Kitty (the two-parter "What Is and What Never Should Be" and "Heartbreaker"), and Fez's romance with DMV employee Nina, which goes tragically awry (and lead to a major season-ending disaster for him). Guest stars this season include Jessica Simpson in a recurring role as Kelso's California girlfriend, Annette, as well as Fred Willard, Tom Poston and Betty White as Kitty's parents, and Bobcat Goldthwait. In short, season 5 is standard issue for That '70s Show, a charming mix of broad comedy and teen-friendly drama that's well played by its very likable cast. The four-DVD set includes some surprisingly light extras: short reminiscences from Valderamma and Masterson, network promos for each episode (which are not accessible via the "Play All" feature), and "Season Five in Five Minutes," which distills the 25 episodes to a five-minute capsule. What's sorely missed are the commentary tracks that appeared on previous boxed sets, and serious '70s fans may note the absence of "That '70s KISS Show," a joint effort between Fox and VH-1 which brought the venerable glam rock band and the show's cast together (along with Cher and Danny Bonaduce!). But it's hard to imagine these omissions deterring longtime viewers from picking up this still-groovy set. --Paul Gaita
