Description

This season, series creator Chris Carter expanded the mythology with plots like the alien black oil and Scully's implant, but also further developed the show's trademark humor and continued to explore paranormal possibilities.

Amazon.com

By its third season, The X-Files had grown from a cult hit to a global phenomenon, becoming the most popular show in many countries outside the U.S. Armed with the knowledge that the show was here to stay, series creator Chris Carter expanded its mythology, and the 24 episodes in this boxed set represent arguably the strongest of all the X-Files seasons. As usual, stand-alone episodes explored the paranormal and sometimes terrifying possibilities in mythology, pop culture, and religion. Darin Morgan helps the show to mature by expanding its use of humor, directing classic episodes such as "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" (featuring a fabulous performance from Peter Boyle) and "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space.'" Meanwhile, two-part episodes continue to delve into the X-Files' own mythology, introducing the alien black oil, the implant in Scully's neck, the mysterious Agent X, and the shape-shifting Jeremiah Smith. But following the complex mythology is not crucial to enjoying the show. The strength of the X-Files lies not in resolution but in feeding the paranoia of its rabid audience by revealing conspiracies that linger in the mind as unanswered questions. Series creator Carter realized wisely that fans did not look to the X-Files to explain the unexplained, but to question that which they thought they understood. The third season was effective because it hinted that while the truth was out there, it was more complex, sinister, and amazing than even Mulder had imagined. --Eugene Wei

There are very few television shows that revolve around a single figure to the extent that Saving Grace does. Then again, there are even fewer that can boast an actor as good as Oscar winner Holly Hunter in the lead role, and Hunter draws on her considerable chops and charms to bring to life a character who, while certainly sympathetic, isn’t always especially likable. Her Grace Hanadarko, a detective working for the Oklahoma City Police Department’s Major Crimes division, is a mess. We’re barely into the pilot episode (the first of thirteen comprising the show’s first season) before we discover that her married partner is just one of Grace’s many bedmates (promiscuous is one way to describe her; slut is another), and that she’s a heavy smoker and drinker and a foul-mouthed, habitual liar. And that’s on her good days. There are reasons for all of this, of course--turns out that the death of her sister in the 1995 terrorist bombing that claimed 168 lives is just one of them--but it’s only when Grace commits a particularly stupid and reckless act that the potential for redemption appears in the form of Earl (Leon Rippy), a tobacco-chewing good ol’ boy who just happens to be an angel. A "last chance angel," to be exact, who suggests that if Grace will simply turn herself over to God, good things will ensue.

It won’t be easy. Despite Earl’s good-natured appeals (along with an occasional spectacular display of God’s awesome powers), Grace is nigh on incorrigible. And while each episode features a crime of some sort, ranging from murder and child abduction to the theft of a million-dollar statue of a steer, creator-writer Nancy Miller (who was an executive producer for The Closer, another TNT series with a strong female lead) focuses much more on Grace’s ongoing struggle to accept Earl’s presence ("Why me?" she asks. "I don’t know," comes the reply) and do something to clean up her life. The show’s bluesy, authentic music (including Everlast’s title tune), dry sense of humor, and sexy tone (Hunter, looking very buff, is nearly nude on numerous occasions) are all positive elements; so’s the supporting cast, especially Rippy and Laura San Giacomo (as a police examiner who’s Grace’s best pal). But Saving Grace is all about Holly Hunter, and by and large that’s a very good thing. Bonus features include audio commentary by Miller and others on two episodes and several short featurettes. --Sam Graham

Amazon.com

At the heart of the first years of Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the romance between Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar), slayer of all things evil, and hunky Angel (David Boreanaz), the tortured vampire destined to walk the earth with a soul. The second season of Buffy took the Buffy-Angel pas de deux from ecstasy to agony in a now-classic plot arc that catapulted the show from WB teen drama to true TV greatness. You see, if the cursed Angel ever experiences true happiness for a moment, he'll revert to being an evil vampire again. And guess what happens after Buffy and Angel finally declare their love for one another and consummate their relationship...

Buffy found its true momentum during the second season, as geeky Xander (Nicholas Brendon) fell in love with popular girl Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), Willow (Alyson Hannigan) gave up her crush on Xander in favor of werewolf boy Oz (Seth Green), and watcher Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) began a sweetly tentative relationship with computer teacher (and witch) Jenny Calendar (Robia LaMorte). Mayhem came to Sunnydale, though, in the form of evil vampires Drusilla (Juliet Landau) and Spike (drolly wicked James Marsters), who were more than ready to aid and abet Angel as he turned bad. It all sounds like horror-action mayhem (and there are great fight scenes), but Buffy took on its plotlines with amazing depth, intelligence, and humor. And oh, man, the love story! Buffy and Angel's tragic relationship is one of the most heartbreaking you'll ever find. Buffy's final dilemma finds her having to save the world at Angel's expense, and Gellar (who deserves a passel of Emmys for her work) is phenomenal at telegraphing Buffy's swirling conflicts between love and duty. This is some of the best TV ever made, period. --Mark Englehart

One of DVD's most requested titles, WKRP in Cincinnati is a blast from the past and an absolutely golden oldie. But this first-season set is bound to cause static with fans who have eagerly anticipated its release. Because of pesky music rights, the songs don't remain the same. "Hot Blooded" is not playing when mild-mannered newsman Les Nessman (Richard Sanders) puts on a toupee in anticipation of an awards-dinner date with bombshell station receptionist Jennifer (Loni Anderson). It's "Beautiful Dreamer" and not "Fly Me to the Moon" that chimes when Jennifer's doorbell is sounded. Any number of generic songs have replaced the contemporary and classic rock so vital to WKRP, which is, after all, set at a radio station, albeit one that is best known for its farm reports. Enter Andy Travis (Gary Sandy), the new program director charged with turning the station around, beginning with changing the format to rock & roll. Andy, the series anchor, is something of the head guard at a nut farm. In seasons to come, he will wonder if he is one of the nuts, which include: "Big Man," Mr. Carlson (Gordon Jump), who is easily flustered, especially by his formidable mother, the station owner; polyester-clad sales director, Herb Tarleck (Frank Bonner), hopelessly old school and on the make for "Jenni-poo"; and morning DJ, Johnny Caravella (Howard Hesseman), a former "boss jock" now reduced to playing "You're Having My Baby" by the Hallelujah Tabernacle Choir. Also on staff is Bailey (Jan Smithers), Mary-Ann to Jennifer's Ginger, and who lacks the confidence to assert herself at the station; and Venus Flytrap (Tim Reid), whom Andy hires to be the nighttime DJ. It's a seamless ensemble of likable characters on par with The Mary Tyler Moore Show's WJM news team. WKRP is one of those rare series that hit its irresistible groove from the get-go. Hesseman sounds all the right notes as Johnny, reborn as Dr. Johnny Fever (ranked no. 73 on the Bravo "100 Greatest TV Characters" chart).

As the season unfolds, the hits just keep on comin', including the classic "Turkeys Away," about a Thanksgiving stunt that goes hilariously awry ("As God is my witness," Mr. Carlson insists, "I thought turkeys could fly"), the "Goodbye Johnny" two-parter in which the (briefly) departed Johnny's replacement is involved in payola (resulting in Mr. Carlson mistaking cocaine for foot powder), and "Never Leave Me, Lucille," in which Jennifer desperately tries to reunite Herb with his wife. Purists may balk at the replaced songs, but the sharp writing and performances provide WKRP's real music. --Donald Liebenson

Description

Welcome back to WJM-TV Minneapolis! Over its seven year run, The Mary Tyler Moore Show won twenty-nine Emmy Awards. Now get ready to turn back the dial to 1970 and rejoin the gang from WJM - the lowest-rated (but most hilarious) evening news show in Minneapolis. Relive all the laughter with Mary, Lou, Murray, Ted, Rhoda and Phyllis as the first season of this classic TV show arrives on DVD.

Amazon.com

She finally made it after all... to DVD! Created by James L. Brooks and Allan Burns, The Mary Tyler Moore Show is the very model of a tailor-made star vehicle. It transformed Moore from Dick Van Dyke's wacky housewife to empowered thirtysomething single woman determined to make it on her own. Moore was the anchor of a peerless ensemble who brought to life characters so indelible that three of them, Ed Asner's Lou Grant, Valerie Harper's Rhoda, and Cloris Leachman's Phyllis, would each get their own series. The 24 episodes that comprise the Emmy-winning first season (1970) hilariously set the stage for what would become one of television's most beloved sitcoms, ranked by TV Guide in 2002 as the 11th greatest of all time (it should have been higher!). The classic pilot episode is a master class of character-based comedy writing, as Mary meets her future "family" at the WJM newsroom, as well as upstairs neighbor Rhoda, with whom she would form perhaps TV's greatest female buddy team.

Among the most memorable episodes are "Support Your Local Mother," which won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing and introduced Nancy Walker as Rhoda's maddening mother, Ida. Another Emmy-winner is "Toulouse-Lautrec Is One of My Favorite Artists," in which Mary dates a height-challenged author. Lending able support in this inaugural season is a stellar guest star roster of comic actors who, like Harper and Asner, apprenticed with Chicago's legendary improvisational Second City troupe: Shelley Berman ("Divorce Isn't Everything"); Bob Dishy ("Second Story Story"); Richard Schaal ("Today I Am a Ma'am," "The Snow Must Go On," in which he plays the ill-fated Chuckles the Clown," and "Howard's Girl"); and Paul Sand ("1040 or Fight"). At this point, the characters are pretty much one-note. Mary is cute and perky, Lou Grant hard-boiled, Rhoda brash, Phyllis flighty, and Ted Knight's vainglorious anchorman Ted Baxter idiotic. But what beautiful music they all would make in seasons to come. --Donald Liebenson

Description

"LET’S BE CAREFUL OUT THERE." So ends each roll call session at the Hill Street station house. As the cops and detectives head out to the streets, Captain Frank Furillo begins the delicate balancing act of providing enough protection for the law-abiding citizens without inciting the neighborhood gangs and local criminal elements who are openly hostile towards any police presence. Yet as dangerous as his inner city precinct can be, Furillo's biggest battles often involve protecting his own cops from the Public Defender's office, self-serving bureaucrats, and even each other.

Amazon.com essential video

Created by Steven Bochco and one of television's most influential series, Hill Street Blues was not your father's cop show. The Emmy-winning pilot episode, "Hill Street Station," immediately established the series as less a police procedural than an up-close and personal "interface with the police experience." To establish gritty, documentary-like realism, the show featured sequences, such as the pre-credit roll call, that were filmed with a hand-held camera. There was chaotic, overlapping dialogue. There were sudden, shocking bursts of violence that claimed popular characters. Story lines were not wrapped up at the end of the hour, but instead, unfolded serially throughout the season. It's no wonder that Hill Street, while championed by most critics, was initially not embraced by viewers. It was, in the beginning, one of television's lowest rated shows, its case not helped by NBC's criminal practice of juggling it in its primetime schedule). But there is justice in Hollywood. Hill Street Blues won the Emmy for best drama in its first season. Also honored were several members of the ensemble, including Daniel J. Travanti as the compassionate and incorruptible Precinct Capt. Frank Furillo, Michael Conrad as the avuncular Sgt. Phil Esterhaus (whose cautionary, "Let's be careful out there," became the show's pop culture signature), and Barbara Babcock as the wildly sexual Grace Gardner, who rocks Esterhaus's world (particularly in the episode that earned her her statuette, "Fecund Hand Rose").

There were no big stars on Hill Street Blues (or, for that matter, no little stars, as one of the cast members jokes during a near-hour-long reunion featurette included as a bonus feature on this three double-sided disc set). Each was an indelible character, among them Charles Haid as cowboy cop Andy Renko, Veronica Hammel as sexy public defender Joyce Davenport, Bruce Weitz as the untamed, animalistic Belker, Keil Martin as LaRue, whose descent into alcoholism is one of the season's most compelling dramatic arcs, and James Sikking as the gung-ho Howard Hunter. Once daring, Hill Street Blues seems almost quaint today, with none of the graphic sex or language that scandalized NYPD Blue (in one episode, a captured cat burglar, portrayed by a pre-L.A. Law Michael Tucker, makes a reference to "wolf pee-pee"). The ethnic portrayals, too, are not exactly nuanced. But the human dramas at the heart of Hill Street still make for arresting television. --Donald Liebenson

Description

Welcome to the world's most famous and most glamorous bastion of hedonism, the Playboy Mansion! For the first time ever, The Girls Next Door takes you beyond the Mansion's gates and behind closed doors where you'll meet Holly, Kendra, and Bridget, just your average girls next door with one small difference...They're smoking hot! Join these lovely ladies for an uncensored view of their daily lives as they laugh, love, play, and party, and see why being Hugh Hefner's girlfriends definitely has its advantages! The Girls Next Door also features sexy, never-before-seen, unrated versions of episodes-- unbleeped, unblurred, and unbelievable!

Amazon.com

Arguably the junkiest and most entertaining reality TV series to date, The Girls Next Door's sensationalism capitalizes on the public's desire to understand what really goes on inside the Playboy Mansion. Starring Hugh Hefner's three main girlfriends as themselves (Kendra Wilkinson, Bridget Marquardt, and "first girl" Holly Madison), the three women, over the course of 15 episodes, describe their daily lives, their feelings for Hef, and the life choices that have helped them to make their dreams come true. Glimpses into Hef's personal affairs, and even his living quarters, like his cluttered but regal office and his gigantic bed, surely satisfy our need to gawk at celebrity. But as episodes delve deeper into this family's unique lifestyle, showing the competitive stress induced by Hugh's ex Barbi Benton's arrival in "Fight Night," or in the mad rush for lingerie preceding the infamous annual summer party, in "Midsummer Night's Dream," the viewer realizes that looking like a Playboy model is a full-time job. Episodes like "Just Shoot Me" fascinate by showing how Playboy photo shoots unfold, while "Grape Expectations," about Bridget's road trip to her hometown, Lodi, give the girls a down-to-earth patina. In fact, the show saliently demystifies pornography by making the industry's stars into real characters. This three-disc set features commentary, the unaired pilot, "Hef's World," and deleted scenes. If one craves to see the ultimate bimbos seamlessly revealing the sweet and sexy, The Girls Next Door is a no-brainer. --Trinie Dalton

Description

Earl continues his mission to right the wrongs heâ??s committed in his life.

Amazon.com

After cooking up a winning formula for the first season, NBC's karmic comedy could afford to shake things up. In Earl's equally successful second, there's an episode incorporating clay animation ("Robbed a Stoner Blind" with Christian Slater), an homage to Cops ("Our 'Cops' Is On!" with Kathy Kinney), a two-parter set in Latin America ("South of the Border" with John Leguizamo), and a Tarantino-style whodunit with narration split between Earl, Randy, Joy, and Crab Man ("Buried Treasure").

As before, Earl (Jason Lee), in cahoots with brother Randy (Ethan Suplee), continues in his quest to become "a better person." He starts by turning to Camden County strip club owner Richard Chubby (Burt Reynolds) to get ex-wife Joy out of a jam involving stolen merchandise ("Jump for Joy"). Joy's struggle to evade prison will last all year, during which Earl falls for her "hot professional" lawyer (Marlee Matlin). Other highlights include "Sticks & Stones," in which Earl gives a bearded lady (Judy Greer) back her confidence, and "Larceny of a Kitty Cat," in which the allergic Randy dates a feline fancier (Amy Sedaris). When that comes to an end, he finally works up the nerve to tell motel maid Catalina (Nadine Velazquez) how he really feels about her ("Foreign Exchange Student').

From the start, Earl attracted a colorful array of talent. That trend continues with Roseanne Barr as a nun ("Made a Lady Think I Was God") and John Waters as a funeral director ("Kept a Guy Locked in a Truck"). Emmy nominees Giovanni Ribisi and Beau Bridges also return for a few episodes, along with other first-season favorites, like Patty, the Daytime Hooker (Dale Dickey). As with the previous set, there's a bushel of extras, including deleted scenes, commentary, and a blooper reel. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Get on down to the basement for a rockin' flashback to the swinging '70s.

As the partying begins, Red decides he's been too lenient, so he sets up a few new house rules. This not only makes the kids miserable, but makes Kitty feel like she's been a bad mother. Hyde feels even worse after he finds his long-lost father tending bar at a local dive. Meanwhile, as Donna and Eric continue dating, Jackie begins pursuing Hyde, which upsets Kelso even though he's dating Laurie. And Fez finally gets a girlfriendÂ?only to discover (too late) that she's certifiably psycho!

Amazon.com

Keep reeling in the years with the third season of Fox's popular and long-running teen comedy That '70s Show. As usual, this season's adventures for Eric Foreman (Topher Grace) and his friends in the wilds of suburban Wisconsin circa the mid-'70s are broadly humorous (often to the point of slapstick), but the performances are genuinely warm and honest, especially between Eric and girlfriend Donna (Laura Prepon), and Eric and his parents (the wry Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp). Episodes in season 3 center around the complicated relationships within Eric's gang--Eric and Donna attempt to resist the urge to take their romance to a physical level, while Kelso (Ashton Kutcher), Jackie (Mila Kunis), and Hyde (the show's secret comedy weapon, Danny Masterson) find themselves in an unlikely romantic triangle. Other season highlights include the Halloween Hitchcock tribute "Too Old to Trick or Treat, Too Young to Die"; Fez (Wilmer Valderamma) spoils Kelso's attempts to get back together with Jackie ("Ice Shack"); and Fez's disastrous relationship with the possibly deranged Caroline (a multi-episode arc starting with "Fez Gets the Girl"). The Season 3 set offers all 25 episodes on a four-disc set, and features a wealth of fun extras that should make it a must-have for series fans. Commentary by director David Trainer is featured on six episodes (writer Patrick Kienlen joins him for three), and several cast members provide introductions to each episode (though oddly, not Grace and Prepon). --Paul Gaita
