Dark and sinister is the new sexy, thanks to Dexter, which in its second season has proven to be the most successful series Showtime has offered up yet. Remember how much you squirmed in your seat during the season one finale? Believe it or not, the premiere of season two felt like it could have been a season finale--because jaws were on the floor when the credits rolled. For being a supposed sociopath, Dex is pretty broken up about the gruesome events that concluded last season. The one and only person who could possibly understand him is six feet under, and it seems our unlikely hero is losing his homicidal grip. He’s even having a little trouble slicing up a few of his latest victims (from a murderous gang member to a chainsaw-wielding fiend from his past). Enter Lila (Jaime Murray, Hustle), a lady with a sweet British accent and a few dark secrets of her own. She seems to accept Dex for who he really is, and he finds himself feeling relaxed for the first time in his life. In contrast, his relationship with his girlfriend Rita (Julie Benz) has been stretched almost to a breaking point. The problem is, he should be anything but relaxed. Someone picked a poor place to go scuba diving off the Florida coast, and came across an underwater graveyard: Dex’s primo spot for dropping dismembered bodies wrapped in heavy-duty trash bags. Word about the "Bay Harbor Butcher" gets out quick, and the F.B.I. sends the best of the best, Special Agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine, Deadwood) to work alongside the police to sniff out Miami’s latest serial killer. This guy is no schlub, and Dex may have met his match. And, yes, Dexter gets to work with Lundy on a daily basis, which provides some wonderfully awkward moments. It certainly doesn’t help that the intuitively paranoid Sergeant Doakes (Erik King, Oz) is hot on Dex’s trail.

Season two of Dexter is all about decisions. Lila or Rita? Old code or new code? Run or fight? Right or wrong? Well, one thing’s for sure: When it comes to writing, casting, acting, and production, the makers of this show made all the right decisions. Michael C. Hall is simply superb as the title character. You’ll never find yourself more willing to genuinely root for a serial killer. It’s bloody liberating. --Jordan Thompson

Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), the phobic private detective on psychiatric leave from the San Francisco police department, has his work--both professional and personal--cut out for him in Monk: Season Six. Typical of the long-running TV dramedy, Season Six doesn't cultivate any new story arcs played out over its 16 episodes. But Monk does get a little closer both to understanding himself and the mystery behind his wife Trudy's unsolved murder--the defining event that drove Monk into off-the-charts obsessive-compulsive behavior. The season opens with the enjoyable "Mr. Monk and His Biggest Fan," guest-starring Sarah Silverman as Marcy Maven, a largely benign stalker of Monk who annoys him and his long-suffering assistant, Natalie (Traylor Howard). When Marcy is accused of using her dog to murder a neighbor, however, Monk leaps to her rescue, endangering himself and Natalie. The episode is particularly noteworthy for a scene in which Monk reluctantly takes part in a go-on-a-date-with-a-studly-cop charity auction, and no one bids on him. (Except Marcy, of course.) "Mr. Monk and the Rapper" stars Snoop Dogg as a successful rap artist who hires Monk to prove he didn't murder a rival. Problem is, Monk actually believes Dogg's character did the misdeed. The story re-introduces Monk's neurotic tendency to blend in with stressful situations during a kind of mental blackout. Shalhoub is hilarious taking on hip-hop affectations in his language and manner, and he has the same chameleon-like problem in a later episode called "Mr. Monk Joins a Cult." In the latter, Monk infiltrates a religious cult under the sway of a charismatic leader (Howie Mandel) suspected of murder. But while investigating the alleged spiritual figure, Monk is persuaded by him to leave his life and join the group. Monk's psychiatrist, Dr. Kroger (Stanley Kamel), proves instrumental in helping Monk free himself from the cult, one of many services that makes Monk feel obliged to help Kroger when the shrink's son, Troy (Cody McMains), gets in trouble in "Mr. Monk and the Buried Treasure." One of the more harrowing scenes in Season Six takes place in that story: Monk and Troy are buried alive in a car covered by a ton of gravel. "Mr. Monk and the Man Who Shot Santa" finds Monk a pariah after being accused of wounding a seemingly friendly fellow tossing stuffed toys to people on the street. Finally, the two-part "Mr. Monk Is On the Run" finds Monk himself turned fugitive after he appears to have shot a man involved in Trudy's death. Like the USA Network's Monk, Psych combines crime-solving with comedy. Shawn Spencer (writer/actor James Roday, Miss Match) and Burton "Gus" Guster (The West Wing's Dulé Hill) have been friends since the 1980s. Aside from their divergent styles--walking encyclopedia Gus plays straight man to Shawn's hyper-observant goofball--the former passes himself off as a psychic. Together, they work with the Santa Barbara Police Department, represented by Chief Karen Vick (Kirsten Nelson) and detectives Juliet "Jules" O'Hara (Maggie Lawson) and Carl "Lassie" Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), their tightly-wound nemesis. The second season allows the duo to dig deeper into their pop-culture past. As before, every episode begins with a childhood incident that anticipates the case to come, most involving Shawn’s dad, Henry (L.A. Law’s Corbin Bernsen), a hard-nosed ex-cop. "American Duos," for instance, spoofs American Idol with Tim Curry as a snide judge and Gina Gershon as his spaced-out colleague, while "65 Million Years Off" recalls Jurassic Park when a paleontologist turns up dead.
