Less asinine than Jackass and more "real" than The Hills, MTV's reality series Rob & Big is an entertaining diversion that mixes friendship and a few crazy stunts into each episode. In this four-disc box set, all 16 episodes from the first two seasons of the show are included. Rob Dyrdek may not be the most famous skateboarder out there, but he is charismatic, funny, and apparently has the means to charter a private jet so he can fly off to pick up his new puppy Meaty. Christopher "Big Black" Boykin is Rob's best friend and bodyguard. Boykin's size often is used as a visual gag, but he's rarely presented in a mean-spirited fashion. Even when he's showing off his girth in a G-string (don't ask), he's clearly in on the joke. The show is built around the odd couple premise of the long-time friends. But like Snoop Dogg's Father Hood, the episodes' most enjoyable elements aren't the crazy antics, but the everyday slices of life that the characters experience. Watching Dyrdek return home to the Midwest where his family clearly misses him is rather touching. And seeing Boykin's relatives prepare for a family reunion is a lot of fun. There are some episodes that obviously are set up for the cameras: Would the pals actually have purchased a time machine if they weren't being filmed to do so? And would anyone really buy a minature horse to keep their dog company (or listen to a dog psychic that tells them they need a woman in the house)? Clearly, no. But the point is that the duo has a show and knows how to entertain its audience. And instead of focusing on contrived romances or feuds with frenemies, this reality series focuses on friendship. There's also an added dose of reality when the stars of the show aren't always treated as such. The look on Dyrdek's face when he's described in a newspaper as a "C-lister" is priceless not because it's true, but because he understands his role in the Hollywood food chain. --Jae-Ha Kim

It's hard to believe that a middle-aged filmmaker can fully evoke the chaotic, anxious world of a troubled teenager, but that's what Gus Van Sant has done with Paranoid Park. Alex (newcomer Gabe Nevins), a teenaged boy whose parents are going through a difficult divorce, is drawn to the rough community that's built up around the titular skateboarding park in Portland, Ore. One night, when an older boy is showing him how to hop a freight train, Alex accidentally kills a security guard. The movie captures the before and after by looping back and forth in time, focusing far more closely on Alex's state of mind than the investigation that threatens to close around him. Filmgoers leery of the drawn-out, atmospheric sequences of Van Sant's recent films (like Gerry and Last Days) need not fear; though Paranoid Park favors mood over plot, it successfully balances character, mood, and story, resulting in considerable dramatic tension, similar to Van Sant's meditation on the Columbine shootings, Elephant. This is not a thriller; Paranoid Park pays as much attention to Alex's relationship with his girlfriend Jennifer (Taylor Momsen, Gossip Girl) as to the killing. The result is a vivid, compelling portrait of adolescence, in all its messiness and confusion. The second series of Red Dwarf was, as Danny John-Jules says in the accompanying DVD commentary, "the one where it really went good." First broadcast in the autumn of 1988, these six episodes showcase Rob Grant and Doug Naylor's sardonic, sarcastic humor to perfection. The cast had gelled and the occasionally erratic tone of the first series--which was made a little too much in the shadow of Dark Star and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy--is replaced by a confident assurance that the show's mix of sci-fi in-jokes and gags about bodily functions really does work. There's more color this year, too, as the drab sets are spiced up, a little more money has been assigned to models and special effects, and the crew even goes on location once in a while.

"Kryten" introduces us to the eponymous house robot (here played by David Ross), although after this first episode he was not to reappear until series 3, when Robert Llewellyn made the role his own. Then in "Better Than Life" the show produced one of its all-time classic episodes, as the boys from the Dwarf take part in a virtual reality game that's ruined by Rimmer's tortured psyche. Other highlights include "Queeg," in which Holly is replaced by a domineering computer personality; the baffling time-travel paradox of "Stasis Leak"; the puzzling conundrum of "Thanks for the Memory"; and the astonishingly feminine "Parallel Universe." --Mark Walker

Skateboarding idol Tony Hawk leads beginners through an introductory course, starting with selecting the right equipment and ending with intermediate tricks. Hawk teaches the basics of several of the most popular styles, including street, vert, and grinds on rails, with help from Kris Markovich and Brian Sumner, two other pro skaters. The 39-minute video starts out with Hawk and his sidekicks demonstrating balance on the board and the correct way to push and turn. Then they move on to the ollie, kickflip, shove- it, heelflip, and 180s, and finally more complicated moves like dropping into the mini-ramp and how to kickturn and rock-to-fakie. For the finale, they teach the correct way to boardslide on a rail. These pros spend about five minutes explaining in detail how to carry out each trick correctly (and incorrectly--all of the pros take some entertaining intentional falls showing how not to do a trick; fortunately, they wear helmets and encourage all skaters to wear them). A helpful popup dialogue box offers information about the subject.

This well-produced video is fun to watch, whether or not you are trying to learn tricks, since it also contains skateboarding humor and the culture of boarder life. It's a great video for beginners, and it will still be useful once you master the basics. It also teaches more advanced tricks that will provide a challenge for quite a long time, since, as Hawk himself says, it takes years to master them. --Neal Marks

If you like your humor down and dirty--or just plain juvenile and scatological--then you'll want to see CKY2K, which served in part as inspiration for MTV's Jackass. The title stands for "Camp Kill Yourself 2000," and ringleaders Bam Margera and Brandon DiCamillo prove there's nothing they won't do for a laugh, whether it means destroying a rental car, riding furniture tied behind moving vehicles, or performing Candid Camera-style practical jokes.
