DescriptionDAUGHTERS OF EVEREST brings a unique flavor to the familiar story of the attempt to climb Mount Everest. In 2000, the first-ever expedition of Sherpa women to climb Everest was organized. This captivating documentary gives a close-up account of the expedition. To the Sherpa people, the ethnic group legendary for their unmatched skill in mountaineering, the mountain is a holy place. Mount Everest is "Chomolongma" - Mother Goddess of the Universe. Ironically, Sherpa women have long been discouraged from climbing the powerful and daunting Everest, relegated instead to more traditional roles as homemakers or into support roles in the prestigious climbing industry of Nepal. The documentary follows the five diverse, charismatic women chosen for this historic expedition. Told from a woman's perspective rarely seen on Everest or off, the film is a dramatic, inspiring Everest story and an absorbing portrait of the Sherpa community. This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.

Amazon.com essential videoFilmed in the IMAX format, this film had the luck (or lack thereof) to be shot during the same fateful and fatal climb of Mount Everest chronicled in Jon Krakauer's book, Into Thin Air, in which a group of rich hobby climbers found themselves trapped by a blizzard near the summit. The IMAX film contains footage of those people, but focuses on its own group, as they make their assault on the top of the world's highest peak. Some startling footage of the mountain and the approaches--and, as in Krakauer's book, the depiction of what is involved in this kind of adventure (particularly the pain and suffering)--makes you wonder exactly where the fun is. But documentary film is about showing you something you're not likely to see otherwise, and this movie certainly fills the bill. --Marshall Fine

Product DescriptionMount Rainier is an iconic American climbing peak- a backyard Himalaya. At 14,410 feet it is the third highest of the lower 48's peaks. The Emmons Glacier is one of the less traveled, but safer and longer routes to Rainier's summit. This is the story of an early summer attempt, which was turned back at 12,000 feet by bad weather, followed by a late summer attempt on the same route, which ends with a successful summit day. Both climbs start at the Crystal Mountain Resort, just outside of the Rainier National Park. The trail begins at White River Campground at 4,500 feet and leads up to Glacier Basin, elevation 6,500 feet, at the foot of the Interglacier. A steep climb up the Interglacier leads to the Emmons Glacier and finally, at nearly 10,000 feet elevation, Camp Schurman, located below the apex of Steamboat Prow. A 1:00 a.m. departure leads to a crystal clear day, and a successful summit of Mount Rainier. Spectacular mountain scenery with good coverage of the seasonal variations in the route conditions. Produced in 2006 from original footage shot in 1999 and 2000
