Product DescriptionNever has a home team played a World Series under a roof or in front of louder fans. Never in the history of Major League Baseball has the home team won every game of the World Series. Of course, never before had the Minnesota Twins won a World Series, and never would anyone have picked them to improve from a sub-.500 winning percentage to champions in just one season. With a lineup powered by the hard-hitting foursome, a staff anchored by two starting aces and one in the bullpen, a manager whose calm was contagious, and rabid fans who nearly blew the roof off the home field, the Twins throttled baseball with an unmatched home field advantage. Every game of this Twin Cities tale, every pitch, every rafter-rocking home run, and thunderous roar of the Metrodome faithful is digitally preserved in this one-of-a-kind collectible. Unlike certain Cardinals pitchers you may choose to not wear earplugs; however twirling "Homer Hankies" is encouraged. DescriptionThese are the greats of baseball history, legends in their lifetime legends today. It's baseball as you've never seen it before the way you always imagined the way it was. When It Was a Game is composed entirely of 8 and 16 mm home movie footage taken by fans and the players themselves between 1934 and 1957. For the first time, star players and their stadiums step out of the black and white newsreel footage, and appear in living, breathing color. Players like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio. Ballparks like Ebbets Field, Briggs Stadium, Crosley Field and Griffith Stadium. As time passed, baseball changed, some of the clubs, the parks, the players are no longer with us. But their memory is and the magic of those memories is brought vividly to life, in When It Was a Game. Amazon.com essential videoThe HBO documentary When It Was a Game (slightly shortened on DVD from the two-part VHS release) is based on a highly original idea: tell the story of baseball from the Great Depression era through the late 1950s using footage from home-movie cameras shot by fans and players. The result is a marvelous retelling of baseball in America as seen from the ground--the culture of stadiums, the ritual of afternoon games, the spiritually sustaining rivalries. Somewhat enthralled by the images at its disposal, the film has a way of almost stepping back from itself, waxing poetic at a sighting of the St. Louis Cardinals' "Gashouse Gang," or a glimpse of Bogart and Bacall in the stands, or the legendary contests between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. Among the truly unexpected sights is color footage of the 1938 World Series (Cubs versus Yanks), not only from inside the stadium walls but from the street as traffic cops, crowds, and vehicles amassed. Of course, there are the heroes, too, often caught in relaxed, unselfconscious moments through the lens of a teammate or a true believer in the bleachers. A great experience all around. Arguably more defined and even more lyrical than its predecessor, the second installment of When It Was a Game moves from a general celebration of baseball culture in America to a specific focus on various facets of the game's history. Once again using footage compiled from the 8mm and 16mm collections that players and fans shot over decades, this sequel follows, among other things, the special relationship between game announcers and fans and takes a fascinating trip through the story of the farm-team system during the 1930s, '40s, and '50s (particularly the near-alternate world of the Coast League). The working-class commonality of players and fans is examined, too. Imagine taking the subway home from Ebbets Field and finding yourself looking back on the day's game with a Dodger outfielder. (It could, and often did, happen.) Brooklyn's assimilation of the Dodgers into their community identity, a story often told, is covered quite winningly here, as is the heartbreak of the team's desertion to sunny California. Closing in on its final minutes, the film takes us on a tour of some of the game's legends and presents a touching tribute to the extraordinary Babe Ruth. --Tom Keogh

DescriptionThe Cub Fan: Narrated by Bob Costas, "Cub Fan" is a moving tribute to the most persevering fans in all of sports. Fueled by their never-ending faith in the impossible dream, Chicago Cubs fans talk about their traditions, their icons, and what it's like to be true to a team that has failed them every year since 1908. You'll sing along with legendary Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray... sit in the stands with fan legends Ronnie Woo, the Bleacher Preacher, and the original Bleacher Bums... patrol Waveland Avenue with Wrigley Field's notorious ball hawks... and hear inspired commentary by lifelong Cubs fan George Will, former Cub greats Ron Santo and Andy Pafko, producing legend Arne Harris, award-winning sportswriters Jerome Holtzman and Bill Jauss, and Harry's wife and grandson, Dutchie and Chip Caray. Inside Chicago: Wrigley Field: It's got acres of Kentucky Bluegrass, miles of Boston Ivy, and gallons of Mississippi Mud. But Wrigley Field is 100% Chicago, and it's a national treasure. Narrated by renowned Chicago DJ Terri Hemmert, this Emmy-winning peek at the inner workings of the "friendly confines" gives you an exclusive tour of the people, the history, and the secrets behind America's favorite ballpark. From the clubhouse to the organist to the world-famous scoreboard, you'll see close-hand how Wrigley has defied convention to become a perennial winner with Cub fans everywhere. Amazon.com,Forever Loyal: A Salute to Cubs Fans and Their Field is a doubleheader of Chicago Cub info. The first segment, "Inside Chicago: Wrigley Field" is a 26-minute exploration of the inner workings of the "friendly confines," from the players' clubhouse to the hand-operated scoreboard to the concession stands. The second segment, "The Cub Fan," tries to dissect what makes these long-suffering stalwarts tick. There are some celebrities in the Bob Costas-hosted 53-minute feature (political pundit George Will, writer-historian Jerome Holtzman, former Cub player Ron Santo), but mostly it's normal fans who explain their affliction (a large part of it is hereditary). A special bonus is "Fandemonium: 2003 in Wrigleyville," an 8-minute compilation of giddy fan interviews as they gather outside the park before the 6th game of the National League Championship Series, when a World Series trip was only nine innings away. Unfortunately, they should have paid heed to a statement in "Inside Chicago: Wrigley Field" (which was produced during the 2002 season): "As fans grow more insistent on becoming part of the action, their interactions with the players has increased." The bizarre fan incident that helped derail the Cubs' 2003 playoff run is the kind of addition to the Cub curse that will make Forever Loyal either a reassuring visit or a painful reminder of what it means to be a Cub fan. Either way, they'll probably find it worth watching, though maybe not more than once. --David Horiuchi

Product DescriptionTHE DRAMATIC 1988 NLCS GAME 4, THE PENNANT-CLINCHING GAME 7, AND ALL FIVE WORLD SERIES GAMES AGAINST THE OAKLAND ATHLETICS.
The last month of the 1988 Major League Baseball season was dominated by Orel Hershiser s record-setting scoreless-innings streak. But while Hershiser closed the season with 59 consecutive scoreless innings, the Los Angeles Dodgers entered the postseason as distinct underdogs. First they needed to overcome the mighty New York Mets: the winners of 100 games featured deep pitching, balanced power, and a battle-tested roster. Then awaiting in the Fall Classic would be the powerful Oakland Athletics. Led by the Bash Brothers, Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, this stacked squad won 104 games and then swept the Boston Red Sox in the American League Championship Series.
As the seven games in this remarkable DVD collection prove, that s why they play the games. The Dodgers had the ever-optimistic motivation of manager Tommy Lasorda. The Dodgers had the ferocity and bulldog determination of Hershiser. The Dodgers had the singular cast of players who far exceeded the sum of the parts and became an unstoppable team. The Dodgers had the 1988 National League MVP, the inspirational lion-hearted leadership of Kirk Gibson, who with one dramatic swing crushed the spirit of the Athletics and carved out a special place in the World Series pantheon.

DescriptionHead Coach Joe Gibbs led Washington Redskins to three Super Bowls wins in 11 years and he did it with three different quarterbacks. A players' strike shortened the NFL season to 9 games in 1982 leaving teams scrambling to reach the playoffs. Most clubs were rusty after the layoff, but Gibbs kept Redskins focused. In Super Bowl XVII, it was Joe Theismann who led Washington to victory over the Miami Dolphins. In 1987, Gibbs told Doug Williams that he was being traded to the Raiders but reconsidered just hours later. In Super Bowl XXII Doug Williams' made Gibbs' decision a brilliant one as his passing produced an amazing 35 points in the second quarter alone and he was named the games MVP. Five years later, Gibbs took note of Mark Rypien's ability to throw an accurate, deep pass which, combined with the speed of wide receivers Art Monk, Ricky Sanders and Gary Clark, helped lead the Redskins to victory over the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVI. The story of the 1982 Redskins is told by Theismann, Guard Russ Grimm and Tight End Rick Walker. Williams, Center Jeff Bostic and Cornerback Darrell Green recount the 1987 Redskins' season. And Hall of Fame Coach, Joe Gibbs, Rypien and Defensive End Charles Mann retell the tale of the 1991 Redskins.

DescriptionFor 43 years the Houston Astros and their fans watched the World Series — wondering if they would ever play in the Fall Classic. So many close calls — the Phillies in 1980, the Mets in 1986, and the Cardinals in 2004. And so the Astros began the 2005 season, as always, with hope — thanks to one of the game’s best rotations. But by June 1st, the Astros were 14 games out of first place. "Rest In Peace" read a newspaper headline. It would take an extraordinary effort just to get to .500. To reach the World Series — a miracle. And that’s precisely what made the 2005 Houston Astros campaign remarkable. The team overcame the worst start in franchise history, won the NL Wild Card on the season’s final day and beat the Atlanta Braves® in an 18-inning Division Series marathon. Then, behind ace pitcher Roy Oswalt, the Astros defeated the rival Cardinals, erasing 43 years of wondering as they went on to experience the World Series, for the first time in history. BONUS FEATURES: • Clemens’ 3 innings of relief in 18-inning NLDS Game 4 • NLDS Game 4: Chris Burke’s 18th-inning walk-off home run • NLCS Game 6: Bottom 9th inning, Astros win pennant • Biggio’s Hit By Pitch record tied and broken • Includes Spanish audio track

Product DescriptionAll the glory of the Cleveland Indians 1948 World Series Championship is now digitally preserved on this official DVD.The Cleveland Indians under player-manager (and 1948 American League( MVP) Lou Boudreau had superb hitting, but it was the pitching that led the way. Veterans Bob Feller and Bob Lemon were joined by a pair of unlikely rookies: knuckleballer Gene Bearden, and at 42 years of age, the oldest Major League Baseball rookie ever, Satchel Paige (with his 1,500 Negro League victories). After defeating the Boston Red Sox in a one-game playoff to decide the pennant, the Indians took on the Boston Braves. Over the first four games Cleveland's pitching registered a 0.75 ERA and sparked by the hitting of Larry Doby, the Indians won their first championship since 1920.Bonus Film: In the glistening new Jacobs Field, the 1995 Indians team relied on overwhelming offense and a pitching staff with a league-leading ERA. Wahoo! What A Finish, celebrates the dramatic come-from-behind victories that rocked "The Jake." Interactive Menus; Scene Selection
