Three Little Words (1950) was an example of Hollywood's late-'40s/early-'50s interest in the lives of famous songwriters. Fred Astaire plays vaudeville dancer Bert Kalmar, whose act with Jessie Brown (Vera-Ellen) runs aground due to his interest in magic acts and a backstage accident. While in rehab, he meets composer Harry Ruby (Red Skelton), and the two discover a knack for writing Tin Pan Alley songs, then Broadway shows, together. There's some mild conflict in their lives as portrayed in film, but mostly the movie is an excuse to pull out a slew of Kalmar & Ruby songs such as "Who's Sorry Now," "My Sunny Tennessee," "Nevertheless," "I Wanna Be Loved by You," and the title tune. Vera-Ellen is an excellent partner for Astaire, and the relatively restrained Skelton puts in a good performance. Also appearing are Arlene Dahl as a musical actress, Gloria De Haven as her own mother, a young Debbie Reynolds as Boop-a-Doop girl Helen Kane, and the real Harry Ruby as a baseball player playing catch with Skelton, the movie Harry Ruby. Three Little Words isn't one of the great MGM musicals of its era, but it's an entertaining picture, especially for fans of Astaire. --David Horiuchi

"Babe Ruth did it on hot dogs and beer," read a sign in the bleachers taunting Barry Bonds as he renewed his allegedly tainted pursuit of the Babe's (and then Henry Aaron's) home run record in 2006. And the Mick? Well, as detailed in Mantle - The Definitive Story of Mickey Mantle, this New York Yankee immortal's rise to fame and glory was fueled by sheer talent; the drinking and carousing that were part of the package could hardly be called "performance enhancing." Indeed, as great as Mantle was--and at his peak in the 1950s and early '60s, only Willie Mays could rival him--he spent his retirement years haunted by the notion that he could have been better. That would have been something, considering that Mantle, the handsome, charming Oklahoma hayseed who was not yet 20 when he joined the Yankees in 1951, played on 12 World Series teams (seven of them winners), made the All-Star team 16 times, won three MVP trophies and one Triple Crown, hit over 500 homers, and made the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Still, he was plagued by serious injuries, not to mention a variety of self-inflicted problems, principally alcoholism; he was also a poor father to his four sons, who were raised mainly by their mother and came to love the bottle as much as their dad did. Retirement (in 1969) only made things worse, as his alcoholism eventually led to the need for a controversial liver transplant (some claimed that his celebrity status pushed Mantle higher up the organ recipient list than he deserved to be) and, finally, the cancer that killed him in 1995. But as this hour-long HBO documentary (narrated by Liev Schreiber and featuring interviews with Bob Costas, Billy Crystal, former teammates, and many others) tells it, Mantle's finest hours came near the end, when he admitted that he'd been a terrible role model who "was given so much… (but) I blew it." Somewhat sentimental but not mawkish, Mantle will transport you back to a simpler, more innocent time. It's not getting old yet, is it? The New York Yankees Fall Classic Collector's Edition 1996-2001 is the perfect counterargument for Yankees fans who've gotten tired of cocky Red Sox fans bragging about their comprehensive 2004 World Series DVD set. Sure, Boston finally broke its curse and in the process branded the Bronx Bombers as the greatest chokers in sports history. But let's not forget that it was the Yankees who won four of the last five World Series of the 20th century--1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000--and if this seven-disc set doesn't include every game of every series like the Red Sox set... well, that's because there are simply too many championships to cover here. What you get instead is a single complete World Series game from the four championship years, each on a single disc, and as originally broadcast on TV minus commercials: the 1996 game 4 vs. the Atlanta Braves, in which Jim Leyritz's late home run was the key to a big comeback; the 1998 game 3 vs. the San Diego Padres, in which Scott Brosius's two homers were the key to another late comeback; the 1999 game 3 vs. Atlanta, won by Chad Curtis's 10th-inning homer; and the 2000 "Subway series" game 5 clincher vs. the Mets. The fifth complete game included is the 2001 game 4 vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks.
