Description

The Ultiimate Chronicle of the Great Dodgers Tradition!

From the moment they became a part of everyday life in Brooklyn, the Dodgers were something special. Night after night they battled, winning the hearts of fans both young and old. But then they would face the Yankees in the World Series, and "Dem Bums" would break those very same hearts. "Wait until next year" became the mantra in Brooklyn — and following five gut-wrenching World Series losses to those Yankees, "next year" finally came in 1955 when the Dodgers became world champions.

Two seasons later, the team moved to Los Angeles, where in 1959 they again captured the title. The days of Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider and Jackie Robinson gave way to Sandy Koufax, Maury Wills and Don Drysdale — and two more championships followed in 1963 and ’65. Fernandomania rocked Los Angeles in the early ’80s — and both Valenzuela and Steve Garvey helped lead the Dodgers to still another title in ’81. Then came the magical season of 1988 when Orel Hershiser rewrote the record books — and Kirk Gibson simply wrote a fairy tale.

These are the championship years.

Tommy Lasorda - Hall of Fame Speech
Don Drysdale - Hall of Fame Speech
Duke Snider - Hall of Fame Speech

Product Description

When It Was A Game, the homerun series for baseball fans, returns for another glorious inning with an exciting and colorful new program narrated by Liev Schreiber: When It Was A Game 3. This retrospective look at the changing face of baseball in America takes on the 1960's, a time many believe was the last decade of baseball's innocence. Though Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and the powerful New York Yankees led off the decade with four straight World Series appearances, by 1964 they were headed for the showers. With the integration of baseball, spearheaded by Jackie Robinson in 1947,, Black superstars fueled the sports growth and a fresh Latin presence brought a new spirit to the game. New names of the 60's that neighborhood kids had to have to have would include the likes of Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, and Sandy Koufax. When It Was A Game 3 features never before seen home movies and vintage photographs with memorable storytelling that bring this incredible period to life. Interviews from the field include Tim McCarver, Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson, Bob Gibson and Juan Marachal and from the stands, fans and sport writers include Billy Crystal, Geraldo Rivera and Bob Costas.

Amazon.com

Taking the viewer back to the old ball game, HBO celebrates America's pastime in the beautiful documentary When It Was a Game 3. Focusing on the 1960s, a time of change for all of America, the film shows how Major League Baseball slowly but surely evolved from pure sport to moneymaking entertainment. The sharp, incredibly clear color footage of players and fans is at times better looking than current sports photography, and the voiced-over reminiscences of stars such as Bob Costas and Billy Crystal evoke a different, more personal, sports experience from what we expect today. Covering the mighty Yankees, the western expansion of both leagues, the increasing inclusion of black players, and the rise of free agency and increased salaries, the film shows the growth of baseball from adolescence to adulthood. --Rob Lightner

It seems elementary in the age of mega-league professional sports, many of which have been revolutionized by African American athletes, to point out that before Jackie Robinson major league baseball was lily white. The Negro Leagues were the crucible where African American players honed their skills. But it took over two decades, until Robert Peterson published Only the Ball Was White in 1972, to get a good glimpse at the stars and journeyman players of the Negro Leagues. It took even longer, until 1992, for Peterson's book, reprinted in a new edition, to garner its deserved critical acclaim. Well, Peterson's book cues up this documentary, which is narrated thoughtfully by Paul Winfield. Throughout Only the Ball, the footage of stars and Hall of Famers such as Buck Leonard, Roy Campanella, Jimmy Crutchfield, and the ever-fascinating Satchel Paige is excellent. Winfield and the players demonstrate abundantly that while the Negro Leagues were an implicit illustration of the absolute unfairness of segregation laws, they were also a vast demonstration that great, invaluable talent was being fostered in those circumstances. And it wasn't just a matter of "settling" for a second-class league. Players thrived, and fans loved the games. This is a delight for sports lovers, historians of the game, and anyone interested in U.S. cultural history. --Andrew Bartlett

Product Description

Few teams in America have dominated their sport as have the New York Yankees. Yankee stars have become part of our heritage and folklore, and New York Yankees: Heart of the Order, showcases the on and off the field lives of four of the greatest Yankees of all time: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle.

Babe Ruth is widely considered the greatest baseball player in history. He was the first player to hit 60 home runs in one season and his career 714 home runs was a record for 39 years.

Self-described as the luckiest man alive, Lou Gehrig still holds the record for the most grand slams (23), played in 2,130 consecutive games and was named the greatest first baseman in baseball history by the Baseball Writers Association.

The only player in baseball history who was chosen to play in the All Star game in every season he played, Joe DiMaggio still-record 56 game hitting streak is one record that may never be broken, and has been memorialized in song including Simon & Garfunkel s Mrs. Robinson, John Fogerty s Centerfield, Billy Joel s We Didn t Start the Fire and Madonna s Vogue. .

Replacing DiMaggio in the Yankee lineup in 1952, Mickey Mantle won 3 American League MVP titles and played on 12 pennant winners and 7 World Championship clubs. He still holds the records for most World Series home runs (18), RBIs (40), runs (42), walks (43), extra-base hits (26), and total bases (123).

1954 - NEW YORK GIANTS vs CLEVELAND INDIANS "The Catch" was a magnificent moment in time when action, athletic genius, and history collide. This celebrated play of the 1954 World Series® created an iconic image and defined the competitive fire, excellence, and grace of the remarkable Willie Mays. Along with manager Leo "the Lip" Durocher, the electrifying Mays and the New York Giants® met the heavily favored Cleveland Indians® and their American League® record 111 victories. Games 1 and 2 took place on the hallowed Polo Grounds in northern Manhattan, while cavernous Cleveland Stadium was the site of the final two contests of the Fall Classic®. In addition to the stupefying defensive play by Mays off a prodigious blast by Cleveland's Vic Wertz, Game 1 also featured the pinch-hit, game-ending home-run heroics of James "Dusty" Rhodes. Stunned and defeated, the Indians could not overcome the stellar pitching and patient hitting of the Giants who swept all four games to claim the championship.

Amazon.com

This 36-minute official Major League Baseball film captures the highlights of the 1954 World Series between the New York Giants and the 111-win Cleveland Indians. Most fans will recognize this as the year of "The Catch," Giants centerfielder Willie Mays' over-the-shoulder grab of Vic Wertz's titanic drive. That moment is here, in slightly longer form than most fans have seen (Mays making the catch and a fan grabbing his head in disbelief), as are "Dusty" Rhodes' clutch home runs and New York's famous field, the Polo Grounds. --David Horiuchi
