But as Force confesses in this A&E reality series (which premiered July 17, 2006), nothing could have prepared him for the challenge of raising three girls while juggling his thriving career and the corporate empire he runs out of the wealthy Orange County suburb of Yorba Linda, California. For better or worse, Force is a bossy, selfish, belligerent, foul-mouthed S.O.B. who hollers like the rest of the world was stone deaf, and as these 14 fast-paced episodes unfold, there are many occasions when you just want to throttle the guy and put him out of his (and our) misery. But just as often, you see how Force truly loves his family, which consists of 55-year-old wife Laurie (still married to Force but living separately with their daughters); 23-year-old Ashley, the most focused and promising heiress to Force's drag-racing legacy; rebellious 19-year-old Brittany, a competitive but not-always-devoted racer of Super-Comp dragsters; and 17-year-old Courtney, a former cheerleader struggling (like Brittany) to balance school with her new and still-uncertain racing career. Like their devoted mother (who understandably grew apart from John while supporting his career), the Force girls are gorgeous, headstrong, and more than a little spoiled, but they form an irresistible team even when they act like trendy "O.C." girls of limited intelligence (as when debating the definition of "original"). With father John as (pardon the pun) a Force to be reckoned with, these young, attractive women hold their own with solid family values, emerging as a close-knit clan more than ready to tackle the everyday challenges of a very demanding sport. From meetings with corporate sponsors to finding time for boyfriends (a topic which gives poor Dad no end of worry), this all-American family enjoys the luxurious perks of success (including three plush homes, limousines, and a very affluent lifestyle), but they're also managing more high-pressure responsibilities than many adults. As siblings, they ultimately prove to be admirably savvy young women who've clearly benefited from the sensible and grounded upbringing that Laurie gave them (indeed, Mrs. Force is the quiet presence that keeps Driving Force from careening out of control), especially since John Force readily admits that "this dad thing doesn't come natural." And while Driving Force serves as an excellent introduction to the dynamic sport of drag racing, it primarily functions as a funny, serious, occasionally toucing and never-boring portrait of a splintered yet close-knit family that anyone can relate to--fast, occasionally furious, anything but perfect, and full of genuine love. --Jeff Shannon

After obtaining permission from CART, a governing body of Indy car racing and Newman/Haas racing (a Championship team co-owned by Paul Newman), Low found his stars for Super Speedway: the racing Andrettis, father Mario and son Michael. Mounting cameras fore and aft on the Andrettis' cars, IMAX offers a better vantage point than an ESPN camera, at a superior grade of clarity. Add to that the excellent sound and you can "feel" the bumps on the asphalt as the cars zoom in and out of corners. The large format can turn a pit stop into a dramatic 12 seconds as we see the driver's eyes dart away from his cockpit for a few brief seconds. We watch Michael Andretti on oval tracks and exciting road courses going over hills and sharp turns. There's even a spin--probably staged--from an angle we've never seen before. Although true race conditions were impossible (the camera is just too bulky), Low sneakily edits his film to stretch the imagination. On race day, several Indy cars drove alongside the camera car hours before the main event, passing and drafting each other with crowds whizzing past them. When edited with footage of the race, it feels like the real thing. Low takes a few off-beat choices in setting up his story. The first image is the biggest chicken you've ever seen. The last shot is a '50s car (lovingly restored during the film) racing through perfect golden foliage on an autumn day. Actors: Audi, Peugeot Product DescriptionThe enthusiastic group of over 258,000 fans who made the trek this year to the Circuit de la Sarthe in northwestern France for the 76th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans were rewarded for their perseverance in putting up with some appalling weather conditions by seeing exciting racing, renewed rivalries, first-time and record-breaking victories, and the dominance of the diesel engine cars. The world's greatest endurance race had those elements, and much more, and this official review captures all of the highlights. For this year, it was another battle for the podium between the diesel powered entries from Audi and Peugeot. Unlike last year's battle of attrition, where both teams were left with one car each at the finish, the full squads of both marques made it to the Sunday afternoon finish, with a familiar result. The No. 2 Audi R10, piloted by Rinaldo Capello, Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen gave Audi their 8th victory in 9 attempts. The win for Kristensen was his 8th personal victory, and sets a new Le Mans record. The Peugeot teams, who led most of the first part of the race, took second and third. The six diesel cars of Audi and Peugeot took the top six places, pushing the always quick Pescarolo Sport team down to seventh place and denying them a fourth straight podium finish. In the LM P2 class, the Porsche Spyders from the teams of Van Merksteijn Motorsport and Team Essex made the most of their first trips to Le Mans with a 1-2 finish. It was another battle between the Aston Martins and the Corvettes for honors in the LM GT1 class, with the Aston Martin DBR9 successfully defending its title as David Brabham and Darren Turner were once again at the wheel, along with teammate Antonio Garcia. The LM G2 group was a Ferrari show all the way, taking the first 4 places, with the Risi Competizione team from the USA in the top spot. As always, there s additional coverage of the test day and final qualifying, plus all of the color and pageantry leading up to the race, driver interviews, and better than ever on-board views so you can experience all of the excitement of the 2008 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
