Bearing a remarkable resemblance to Thomas Garrett, Asner reenacts the famous courtroom scene in 1848 in which Garrett foreshadows the Civil War and firmly declares to redouble his efforts in fighting for true freedom in America. In spite of the court's imposition of a crippling financial punishment, Garrett's ideals were not altered; his clandestine activities continued for many years even during the War. Reading documented text in the form of letters exchanged by Thomas Garrett and William Still (a free black abolitionist in Philadelphia), Asner and Underwood bring to life the fascinating working relationship between the two men and those they helped. The liner was on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City when it struck an iceberg about 95 miles south of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland just before midnight on April 14, 1912. Of the more than 2,220 persons aboard, about 1,513 died, including the American millionaires John Jacob Astor, Benjamin Guggenheim, and Isidor Straus. The ship had been proclaimed unsinkable because of its 16 watertight compartments, but the iceberg punctured five of them, one more than had been considered possible in any accident, and the Titanic sank in less than three hours. Subsequent investigations found that the ship had been steaming too fast in dangerous waters, that lifeboat space had been provided for only about half of the passengers and crew, and that the Californian, close to the scene, had not come to the rescue because its radio operator was off duty and asleep. This informative program provides unique insights into the construction of the Titanic, as well as many other facts of historical significance.

DescriptionThis is one of the better collections of automobile advertisements of its kind. While other collections seem to focus on a particular make of car or production house, this 2-DVD set presents a wide variety of clips relating to car ads in the 1950s. Chevrolet, General Motors and the Ford Motor Company are all represented. The gem of the collection is a clip featuring a young Jimmy Stewart selling Chevrolets by emphasizing their safety. A couple of the clips don’t really seem to be selling automobiles at all – instead they are selling the idea of suburbia as the new American dream. They do belong here – since the suburb could not exist without cars and these clips put the rest of the collection in a historical context. Fans of a certain age will be amused to watch Dinah Shore sing "See The USA In Your Chevrolet."
