DescriptionWinner of the 1997 Gramaphone Award for Best Video! This production by the Glyndebourne Festival Opera stars Christine Schafer, Kathryn Harries, and Wolfgang Schone. With its intensely beautiful score, this is one of the greatest operatic masterpieces of the 20th century. Andrew Davis conducts the London Philharmonic. Subtitles in English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese. Color, 183 minutes. Amazon.comAlban Berg's second and last opera Lulu is one of the monuments of modernism, constructed around serial technique and containing scenes conceived of as Sonata-form, Suite, and so on. The bliss of Andrew Davis's conducting in this classic Glyndebourne production is that we forget all of this--Davis doesn't gloss over the music's intellectual content, but that's not what we think about as we watch and listen. Part of the production's strength is the prodigious performance by Christine Schafer as Lulu--for once we believe in the character's sexual energy and power; and Schafer makes her real enough as a person that we largely forget the work's intrinsic misogyny. The rest of the cast is admirable too: Norman Bailey brings something perversely sweet to the disreputable painter Schigolch; Kathryn Harries makes the dying words of Lulu's lesbian lover Geschwitz one of the work's lyric high points; David Kuebler is equally powerful as Alwa. The final duet between Lulu and her destroyer Jack the Ripper is one of Wolfgang Schone's great moments, but he is equally good as Dr Schon, the man Lulu marries and kills. This is a performance of energy and beauty, matched by a simple but effective production. --Roz Kaveney

DescriptionOriginally commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to commemorate the memory of John K. Kennedy, Leonard Bernstein's Mass is an exhilarating religious and musical masterpiece. The work is a staggering example of musical eclecticism, mixing aspects of classical, pop, jazz, rock, and blues. Rarely performed due to the enormity of the production, Mass features more than two hundred performers among the large orchestra, a rock band, a blues band, 18 soloists, 80 chorus singers, and a company of 45 dancer-singers. This performance was staged at the Vatican as part of the Jubilee 2000 celebrations of the Roman Catholic Church. Amazon.comTimeless traditions and contemporary anxieties clash musically and theatrically in Leonard Bernstein's powerful but rather neglected "Theatre Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers," The dancers are omitted in this semi-staged performance, produced for the Vatican's Jubilee 2000 celebration, but the show's eclectic musical brilliance, its adept mingling and clash of musical styles, its contrasts of hope and anxiety, faith and unbelief, ancient serenity and modern dissatisfaction are all brilliantly conveyed. More than 30 years after its premiere, for the opening of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., Mass still has the impact of this morning's newspaper headlines. Only Bernstein, a crossover genius, could have produced this score, which mingles folk and ecclesiastical styles, choral and solo vocals, spoken dialogue and dramatic gestures, classical, rock, blues, Broadway-style tunes, gospel, electronic effects, Hebrew prayer, a symphony orchestra, and a kazoo ensemble, and made it all work together with shattering impact. The enormous cast of this production is equal to all its stylistic and musical demands, and the cameras and microphones capture it all effectively. --Joe McLellan

Product DescriptionThe Party at the Palace was in commemoration of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, held over the Golden Jubilee Weekend, 1-4 June 2002. The concert itself was the pop equivalent of the Prom at the Palace, a classical music event.
The concert was held at the gardens of Buckingham Palace Garden as part of the Golden Jubilee. It was touted as the greatest concert in Britain since Live Aid or possibly ever. Tickets to the event were determined by a lottery, and 12,000 people attended the concert, and an estimated one million people watched outside the Palace in The Mall and around the Queen Victoria Memorial; another 200 million saw it on television. The concert included performances of many hit songs from the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
The event was the culmination of a national day of partying. The BBC Music Live Festival also occurred on the day. At 1:00 towns across the United Kingdom had bands play All You Need Is Love before church bells were rung around the country.

DescriptionPuccini's heart-rending love story tells of high-spirited young bohemians who are strapped for cash but draw strength from each other, and the poet Rodolfo's deep love for the young seamstress, Mimì. "This is surely one of the most engagingly inventive, thoughtfully witty and vital productions ever to enliven the Australian operatic stage." Sun Herald "Tenor David Hobson and Soprano Cheryl Barker bring the lead roles thrillingly to life, playing on audience's heartstrings with their sweet duets and convincing acting." Telegraph Mirror Featuring: Cheryl Barker Mimì; David Hobson Rodolfo; Roger Lemke Marcello; Christine Douglas Musetta; Gary Rowley Collin; David Lemke Schaunard. Conductor Julian Smith, Director Baz Luhrman ,Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. Recorded live at the Sydney Opera House, February 25, 1993. Amazon.comIt might be possible to know this La Bohème and not love it, but I have never met anyone who felt that way. "Oh yes," said a friend, "that's the good one where everybody is the right age." The youth and freshness of the singers are, in fact, major assets in this production. Youthful high spirits and vulnerability are delicately portrayed, with sharp contrasts between the Parisian bohemians' abject poverty and their carefree lifestyle. On DVD, La Bohème is the work where the competition is strongest. Solid arguments can be made for the staging of the Metropolitan Opera production or the vocal quality of the San Francisco production, but the Australian Opera offers the closest identification of performers with the characters they represent. The effect is usually touching, sometimes downright electrifying. For this production, the story is moved up to Paris in the 1950s. A veneer of existentialism, a sense of the absurd, can be detected in the young men's lifestyle, but the implicit message is that, even with electricity (e.g., a massive neon sign celebrating "L'Amour"), bohemian life in the 1950s was essentially unchanged from the 1830s. There are good performances throughout, particularly by David Hobson (Rodolfo) and Cheryl Barker (Mimi), and the direction of Baz Luhrmann (Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge) is outstanding. --Joe McLellan

This spectacular performance of the Choir's 2004 Christmas concert also features a special guest appearance by a prima ballerina from Ballet West, Utah's highly acclaimed dance company, performing two selections from The Nutcracker. Capturing the musical spirit of the season, the program blends traditional and contemporary favorites such as "Angels from the Realms of Glory," "Deck the Halls," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "Silver Bells," and "We Need a Little Christmas." Poignant African-American spirituals such as "I Wonder as I Wander" and "Sweet Little Jesus Boy" showcase the remarkable talents of Broadway singer and actress Audra McDonald. A memorable narration of "In Search of the King," based on a story by Henry Van Dyke, and a reading of the Christmas story from the New Testament by Peter Graves, add to the rich variety of the program. This magnificent presentation will be a holiday favorite for years to come.
