Snaps to the makers of QAF for trying to bring their characters into the grown-up world – Michael, Emmett, and Ted started their own businesses; Justin finally cut loose from Brian-–but too many melodramatic plot twists and turns impeded a lot of the character development this show worked hard at during its first two seasons. Funny is funny whether you're gay or straight, and Rick & Steve is a very funny series. A comedy breakthrough in more ways than one, this stop-motion animated sitcom premiered on the Logo channel on July 10th, 2007, and "The Happiest Gay Couple In All The World" became an instant hit with Logo's target audience. The show's gay and lesbian demographic shouldn't scare off potential straight fans, however: Rick & Steve is unabashedly R-rated with its provocative and occasionally raunchy humor (this is definitely NOT a show for prudes), but it's readily accessible to any open-minded fans of The Simpsons and South Park. Expanding on an award-winning 1999 comedy short that he created with animated Lego figures, series creator Q. Allan Brocka brings refreshing candor to Rick (voiced by Will Matthews), Steve (peter Paige), and all the other plastic-toy characters who populate West Lahunga Beach, "the gayest of gay ghettoes" where Rick & Steve share their "fabulously decorated double-income-no-kids home." In the premiere episode "Guess Who's Coming for Quiche?," Rick is thrilled when his lesbian best friend Kirsten (Emily Brooke Hands) asks him to be a sperm donor so she can have a child with her partner Dana (Taylor M. Dooley), a mullet-sporting bull dyke who hates men with a passion. The only problem is that Steve and Dana can't stand each other, and much of the humor in Rick & Steve arises from their constant barrage of gay and lesbian insults. Adding to the fireworks is the co-dependent coupling of 19-year-old "club kid" Evan (Wilson Cruz) with Steve's best friend Chuck (British gay icon Alan Cumming), a "bitter old queen" who's disabled and HIV positive. Also included in the regular cast is Condi Ling (Margaret Cho), the show's resident fag hag (er, make that "alternative lifestyle companion") and Rick & Steve's occasionally magical cat Pussy, who can talk, but only when she wants to. Good writing is the foundation of any successful sitcom, and the 6-episode first season of Rick & Steve has plenty of it. Loaded with snappy comebacks, outrageous one-liners and absurd situations that somehow make sense, the series is propelled by a defiant disregard for political correctness, but its edginess (unlike the juvenile antics of South Park) derives from good-natured compassion for its mostly-likeable characters, contrasted with a low-budget aesthetic that combines Day-Glo pastels and primary colors with simple Playskool anatomy. Released almost immediately after the first season ended in August 2007, this highly entertaining DVD offers an abundance of bonus features including 12 hilarious one-or-two-minute "digisodes" originally shown on the official Rick & Steve website, a pair of informative behind-the-scenes featurettes, interviews with the voice cast, and clips from other MTV Networks programming. (Check out the clip for "Tranny 911" – it's almost as funny as Rick & Steve.) The only thing missing here is the original Rick & Steve short from 1999 --Jeff Shannon

The friendship between the handsome gardener and his elderly gay admirer is by turns tenuous, humorous, mutually beneficial, and ultimately rather sad--but to Condon's credit Whale is never seen as pathetic, lecherous, or senile. Equally rich is the rapport between Whale and his long-time housekeeper (played with wry sarcasm by Lynn Redgrave), who serves as protector, mother, and even surrogate spouse while Whale's mental state deteriorates. Flashbacks to Whale's filmmaking days are painstakingly authentic (particularly in the casting of look-alike actors playing Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester), and all of these ingredients combine to make Gods and Monsters (executive produced by horror novelist-filmmaker Clive Barker) a touchingly affectionate film that succeeds on many levels. Four Minutes recalls the lineage of films dedicated to marginalized characters who find solace in piano playing, such as Jane Campion’s The Piano, yet there is more to this drama than the story of a woman yearning for autonomy. Jenny (Hannah Herzsprung), a prisoner described as the type to "steal a smoke from a corpse" by another inmate, is wasting away in a German penitentiary until she is recruited by piano teacher, Traude Krüger (Monica Bleibtrau), to train for a contest coming up. Krüger, who sees Jenny’s fingers keying organ music on her church pew in Sunday mass, realizes Jenny’s innate talent and slowly heals her student through music as well as through conversations revealing their mutually difficult pasts. While Jenny’s violent outbursts continuously disrupt her piano privileges, Traude heroically defends Jenny in meetings with the hard-edged warden, Mr. Meyerbeer (Stefan Kurt). The crux of the story lies in the friendship forged between these women through Traude’s determination to heal her young prodigy. Through flashback, the viewer learns what male violence was inflicted upon each lady. Four Minutes, subtitled from German, is a bit humorless, and one doesn’t glimpse even a slight smile on any character’s face until fifty minutes of film have rolled. Jenny’s outbursts at the piano as well, such as when she plays handcuffed to defy Meyerbeer, are overwrought. Still, the lack of sentimentality inherent to each character lends a wry realism to the intelligent script, such as when Ms. Krüger tells Jenny to stop playing "negro music," exposing her antiquated, uptight musical taste. Four Minutes succeeds at illustrating a relationship in which two women cut from different cloth share commonalities that assume a female essence, though at their core they crave a universal desire for freedom. --Trinie Dalton

While most of the recent outpouring of gay cinema tries to coast on a smile and a little bit of charm, Trick provides some considerable filmmaking cojones to back up its good looks: a talented cast, a witty screenplay, and a sweet sense of romance. Unfolding as part stressed-out fever dream and part farce, Trick chronicles one tumultuous night in the life of aspiring Broadway songwriter Gabe (Christian Campbell), who's suffering from both a heterosexual roommate (who kicks him out when there's female companionship) and a bad case of writer's block. Making an impulsive side trip to a gay bar, he locks eyes with a hunky go-go boy (J.P. Pitoc), who magically appears later that night on the subway, with amorous intentions to boot. Hotfooting their way back to Gabe's apartment, they're interrupted in medias res by Gabe's roommate, girlfriend in tow. From there it's downhill fast, as the two unsuccessfully scramble to find a place to finish things up. On their nighttime odyssey, though, both discover that there's more than sex and heat to their interaction. And much like its premise, Trick evolves from what seems to be a quickie one-night stand to something more substantial, a film with heart and a very funny soul. Jason Schafer's screenplay puts the luckless couple into one bind after another, and furnishes them with incredibly entertaining dialogue; fortunately, both the leads are up to the challenge of bringing it to life. Campbell (Neve's older brother) has a sweet smile and gentle comic timing; the surprise, however, is Pitoc, whose chiseled physique belies both a wicked sense of humor and a sincere-without-being-gooey romantic streak. Both are aided and abetted by a finely tuned supporting cast, most notably Clinton Leupp as an acidic, motor-mouthed drag queen and Tori Spelling in a go-for-broke star turn as Campbell's best friend, a painfully bad singer-actress. By the end of the movie, you'll be entirely won over, and anxiously awaiting a second date and more from these actors and filmmakers. --Mark Englehart

French humor, which isn't exactly subtle, is delivered via an especially broad premise in The Closet. A nebbish (Daniel Auteuil) who works at a condom manufacturer learns he's about to be fired; with the help of his neighbor, he pretends to be gay so his boss can't fire him without seeming prejudiced. Then a bigoted coworker (Gerard Depardieu) tries to worm his way into the nebbish's good graces because he's afraid of being fired. In the wrong hands, The Closet could be ham-fisted slapstick. What makes this movie truly delightful is the superb understatement with which every gag is handled; even the sight of Auteuil wearing a giant condom tip on his head has an impeccable deadpan grace. All the performances are excellent; Depardieu's smarm is particularly delicious. Each scene takes a new twist of social discomfort and befuddlement in this winning comedy. --Bret Fetzer
