DescriptionFROM THE CREATIVE GENIUS OF IRWIN ALLEN COMES ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AND ORIGINAL SCI-FI SHOWS OF THE 1960s! Determined to prove that Project Tic Toc was capable of sending humans through time, Dr. Tony Newman and Dr. Doug Phillips entered the project's time tunnel before final tests were completed. Now, caught in time and unable to return home, the two scientists battle to stay alive as the Vortex of Time thrusts them into the middle of some of the most significant events in world history. But even more important, as the time travelers encounter famous and influential people of the past, they must make sure their actions don't inadvertently change history and alter the future. Amazon.comThe Time Tunnel rivaled Mr. Peabody for improbable history, and in the series' final 15 episodes, scientists Tony Newman (James Darrin) and Doug Phillips' (Robert Colbert) time travels take an increasingly fantastic turn, as witness their close encounters with aliens in "Visitors from Beyond the Stars," "The Kidnappers," "Raiders from Outer Space," and the final episode, "Town of Terror" (listen in these episodes for the music that shamelessly steals from Bernard Herrmann's score for The Day the Earth Stood Still). Things even take a supernatural turn in "The Ghost of Nero." Tony and Doug's excellent adventures include meetings with such personages as Rudyard Kipling ("Night of the Long Knives"), "Billy the Kid," and, incredibly, Machiavelli, who has been transported to Gettysburg during the Civil War ("The Death Merchant"). They also meet up with such mythical characters as Robin Hood ("The Revenge of Robin Hood") and "Merlin the Magician." One of the series' more provocative episodes is "The Walls of Jericho," in which Tony and Doug join forces with Joshua. Observing from Project Tic-Toc's underground facility, Dr. Ann MacGregor (Lee Meriwether) expresses skepticism over the biblical story. "I'm a scientist," she states. "I don't permit myself to believe in miracles." Other memorable episodes include "Kill Two by Two," set on a Pacific Island during 1945 where Tony and Doug meet a disgraced Japanese soldier, and the episode featuring Robert Duvall as a saboteur who leads Tony and Doug on a "Chase Through Time." Among this series' enduring charms are the obvious use of footage from theatrical films to clumsily boost production values, as well as some of the more juvenile dialogue. When they learn of one alien plot to attack earth, our heroes proclaim, "We can't let them do it." Time ran out on the Tunnel after only one season. Its cancellation left Tony and Doug to seemingly forever tumble "along the infinite corridors of time" en route to some "new fantastic adventure." Thanks to DVD, we can join them time after time. --Donald Liebenson

Amazon.comOpening with a Dido theme song and featuring character-driven, sweet-natured melodrama, Roswell was a show with a surprisingly dedicated fandom, who twice won it reprieve from cancellation. One of its main strengths was, of course, the extent to which its premise--alien teenagers trying to sort out their identities while emotionally involved with their human contemporaries--was a free-floating metaphor for race and sexuality issues. Another was the strong ensemble that its cast developed: you believed in the strangeness of the alien trio and the well-intentioned normality of their three human friends. Jason Behr gave the alien Max a quiet authority and Majendra Delfino took the sidekick role of Maria and gave it both intensity and fine comic timing. It was also a show in which you were never sure which adults you could trust--William Sadleir trod a fine line of ambiguity as the local sheriff and Julie Benz was silkily sinister as an FBI agent. Anyone who ever loved this show will want these DVDs--and many others may want to find out what the fuss was about. Roswell is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen. The special features include commentaries by writer Jason Katims, the directors, and various cast members as well as featurettes. The commentaries are unusually insightful on the casting process, and the discs also include the auditions for the part of Tess as well as deleted scenes and a music video. --Roz Kaveney

DescriptionVarious Amazon.comJust when you thought it was safe to go back to the beach comes Son of the Beach, an uproarious Baywatch parody that revels in juvenile idiocy, bawdy puns, gleefully tasteless social and ethnic stereotypes, and the skimpiest wardrobe on prime time. Co-creator Timothy Stack is the world's greatest lifeguard Notch Johnson, a paunchy, pasty, middle-aged boy scout who patrols the surf with his team of bikini-clad hardbodies. Former Playmate Jaime Bergman is B.J., a daffy trailer-park bimbo, and Leila Arcieri is Jamaica, a hip-hop honey from the hood. Roland Kickinger provides the hunk factor as the body-building "breath of fresh Aryan" from the Fatherland, Chip Rommel, and Kim Oja does straight-man duty as the obligatory "sensible, flat-chested one." These well-endowed lifeguards battle the everyday dangers of beach life--toxic waste, insidious cult leaders, mobsters, assassins, and randy sea monsters--and still find time for a racy video fashion show in every episode ("A lingerie party? What would that be like?"). Produced by Howard Stern's company, this anything-goes spoof has all the restraint of a bachelor party with a no-host bar and the energized delivery of a screwball cartoon. The 3-DVD set features 21 episodes of political incorrectness, including the never broadcast episode "Chip's a Goy," in which the studly German sacrifices his foreskin for an Israeli beach babe, and the inspired "Queefer Madness," a gonzo remake of The Wild One with David Arquette, Lucas Haas, and Neil Patrick Harris as beatnik rebels on BMX bikes. Ride the big one, daddy-o! --Sean Axmaker

DescriptionHIS TIME HAS COME . . . Now you can own the entire first season of ANGEL. All 22 classic episodes are available for the first time in this exclusive 6-disc collectorÂ's edition. From Â"City of,Â" Â"In the DarkÂ" and Â"I Will Remember YouÂ" to Â"Hero,Â" Â"SanctuaryÂ" and Â"To Shanshu in L.A.,Â" these Season One episodes are a must for every Angel and Buffy fan. Amazon.comHe's hunky, he's brooding, he's a do-gooder, and he was Buffy's first boyfriend. Angel, the tortured vampire destined to walk the earth with a soul, got his own series after three seasons on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and did what any new star might do: he moved to L.A. (the City of Angels--get it?) and set up shop. Angel (co-created by Buffy mastermind Joss Whedon) finds the titular vampire (David Boreanaz) as a kind of supernatural private investigator, fighting evil one case at a time and, like his ex-girlfriend, keeping the world from getting destroyed by vengeful demons and such. A darker, more film noir version of Buffy, Angel lacked the peppy humor that permeated Sunnydale but more than made up for it in its soul-wrenching gravitas, and it elevated Boreanaz to leading-man status, a role he filled out ably and then some. Initially, the stoic vampire was paired with Irish demon Doyle (the late Glenn Quinn) and fellow Sunnydale transplant Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), but Angel finally found its footing when Doyle was dispatched (giving his powers of precognition to Cordelia) and replaced by Buffy alum Wesley (Alexis Denisof), a fallen watcher who, like his friends, was hoping for a new start in L.A. However, pesky law firm Wolfram and Hart (a front for the demon mafia, as it were) reared its ugly head and discovered Angel's presence, thus setting the stage for a battle of good and evil--and if you're a regular Joss Whedon fan, you know that it's a never-ending war. This first season features guest appearances by various Buffy characters, including werewolf boy Oz (Seth Green), rogue slayer Faith (Eliza Dushku), deliciously evil vamp Darla (Julie Benz), and Buffy herself (Sarah Michelle Gellar), all of whom helped get the show off and running in style. --Mark Englehart

DescriptionHaving grown up in Roswell with only a few close friends aware of their alien origins, Max, Isabel, and Michael have finally come of age. Uncertain about what lies ahead of them after graduation, they are suddenly forced into action when it becomes clear that the incidents in which they have used their alien powers to help others have finally caught up with them. As the Air Force and FBI close in, the trio realizes that Roswell is no longer the safe haven it once was. As they prepare to leave their friends and families behind, Liz has a shocking vision which makes everyone realize that it is not only the aliens who are in danger but their human friends as well. Amazon.comThe sci-fi-themed teen drama Roswell begins its third and final season with Max (Jason Behr) and Liz (Shiri Appleby) back together and taking a desperate chance to find Max's son. After the many cosmic concepts of the previous season, the series dialed back the mythology to focus on the more--excuse the expression--human aspects of the characters. Roswell was often described as Dawson's Creek meets The X-Files, and accordingly Isabel (Katherine Heigl) finds romance with a lawyer (Adam Rodriguez), but struggles both with her mixed feelings about revealing her alien identity and with the aftermath of the tragedy in season 2. (The romance is later spoofed in a Bewitched-style episode.) At the same time, Max and Michael (Brendan Fehr) travel to Los Angeles in search of an alien bounty hunter that might be able to help them find Max's son. (They also find Roswell executive producer Jonathan Frakes making a guest appearance as himself.) Michael takes a night job that at first is played for laughs (in "Michael, the Gang, and the Great Snapple Caper"), then takes on threatening implications in a rousing two-parter that eventually leaves all parties not too much different from how they started. Michael also struggles in his relationship with Maria (Majandra Delfino), first when he makes new friends and later when she meets a figure from her past (Clayne Crawford) who revives a longtime music dream that might lead to bigger things. All the while, the alien trio faces the constant struggle of keeping their identities secret, even as the net seems to be tightening around them. When a key character returns in the series' penultimate episode, both the aliens and the humans they love face a critical decision. The Dawson's Creek comparison is also valid in an undesirable way: many of the background songs that characterized the series have been replaced for DVD due to licensing expenses. Newcomers to the series, of course, probably won't notice. Four episodes have commentary tracks, two by Frakes, who has some interesting information but leaves dead air and introduces characters we already know. Better are the tracks by executive producer/writer Ronald D. Moore on the Bewitched spoof and by creator Jason Katims on the series finale. Other features are a 13-minute summary of the season and Shiri Appleby's appearance on Japanese TV to publicize the DVD release of the first season in 2004. --David Horiuchi

DescriptionTAKE A SEAT ON THE COUCH! Bob Newhart returns as successful Chicago psychologist Dr. Robert Hartley in the second season of this hilarious sitcom from the '70s. A firm believer in group therapy, the good doctor continues to try to help his regular, if somewhat dysfunctional, patients sort out their oftentimes weird and wacky problems. 3-DISC SET INCLUDES: All 24 Season Two episodes, Audio commentary on selected episodes, & All-new "Making-of" featurette. Amazon.comIn its sophomore season, The Bob Newhart Show became an integral part of CBS's phenomenal Stay Home Saturday lineup of now-immortal shows that included All in the Family, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Carol Burnett Show. Audiences were initially slow to pick up on Bob, but by its second season, the show was on a roll, and enjoyed the highest ratings of its six-year run. Watch our exclusive interview with Bob Newhart: high bandwidth or low bandwidth | The season-opening episode, "Last TV Show," in which Chicago psychologist Bob reluctantly, and regretfully, allows one of his group-therapy sessions to be filmed for television, is a series classic that showcases Newhart's gifts as a great reactive comic actor. The Bob Newhart Show mined brilliant character-based comedy from Bob's interactions with his patients (including the supremely neurotic Mr. Carlin, indelibly portrayed by Jack Riley), his best friend, womanizing dentist Jerry (Peter Bonerz), his wisecracking receptionist Carol (Macia Wallace), his intrusive neighbor Howard, a divorced airline pilot (Bill Daily), and, of course, his usually level-headed schoolteacher wife of five years, Emily (Suzanne Pleschette). Among her finest half-hours are "Mister Emily Hartley," in which Bob discovers that Emily's I.Q. is higher than his, and "The Modernization of Emily," in which Emily embarks on a disastrous youth kick after she meets a former student who is now in college. Through it all, the pitch-perfect writing keeps it real and in perfect sync with Newhart's understated style. In addition to the wonderful ensemble, this second season is brightened by several "before they were famous" appearances, by, among others, Teri Garr ("Confessions of an Orthodontist"), a pre-Fonzie Henry Winkler ("Clink Shrink"), Howard Hesseman ("The Jobless Corps"), and Raul Julia ("Oh, Brother"). Incredibly, The Bob Newhart Show never won an Emmy, but it endures as one of TV's class acts. --Donald Liebenson More Bob Newhart at Amazon.com The Bob Newhart Show - The Complete First Season | Something Like This - The Bob Newhart Anthology (CD) | Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart (CD) |

DescriptionTHE SIMPLE LIFE 3: Interns follows celebutantes Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie as they pack-up their Louis Vuitton bags and board a Greyhound Bus to tour the country and take on an assortment of odd jobs. Amazon.comThe biggest joke of The Simple Life concept is that the audience is in on the joke. Granted, the joke isn't always that funny, but it's funnier when the girls -- Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, a pair of pampered royal New York brats -- aren't in on it. Like its predecessors, this compilation edition of the reality TV show continues the same basic conceit of plopping the girls in outrageous blonde-out-of-water situations and watching the sparks fly. This time they're tasked to be interns and actually work ("Work?!? Us?!?") at places like a plastic surgery clinic, an airline, a mortuary, a nursing home, an automotive shop, etc., etc. Of course it's all set up as an intentional joke on the sometimes angry, sometimes befuddled, sometimes good-humored "employers" and host families they're stuck with. More than that, it's just a series of staged scenes with some goofy video verite added when necessary. Any sense of comic timing comes from the ironic editing, silly sound effects, and equivalent of spit-takes reaction shots from the real people around them who can't believe their eyes. We shouldn't believe our eyes either, because it really is all a put-on. The train-wreck appeal of The Simple Life is that the girls go around making fun of lower class and white trash living, but they're pretty much complete idiots themselves. The result is obviously manipulative, but sometimes clever. There's great comfort in laughing at them, not with them.--Ted Fry
