Just like with Season One, watching Season Two is like eating junk food, so sensational and silly are the three ladies commenting on their glamorous day-to-day activities. Though the novelty of the show has worn off, more appearances by Hugh Hefner and a gained understanding of the trio's dynamics--equally friendly and competitive--helps the show transcend utter banality. In fact, the show feels more like Dynasty, now an intricate combination of reality television and soap opera. More shown aggravations amongst the ladies, and more glimpses of Hef's love for this unfolding drama in his own home, make the show a fine example of American sensationalism. Two episodes are dedicated to Hef's 80th birthday extravangaza, making it the most significant story in the second season. Wonderful footage of previous Hefner birthdays and previous playmates frolicking nearly nude adds heft to Playboy's historical significance. Yet he isn't really gone: Brock's emotional ties to Reba remain powerful, and he is often full of regret over whatever is driving him away. More challenging is Barbra Jean's needful attachment to Reba, which gets particularly difficult when the former keeps turning up at sensitive times, such as a visit from Reba's parents (Barry Corbin, Dorothy Lyman) and during Cheyenne's Lamaze classes. While coping with her own divorce, Reba keeps busy helping Cheyenne and Van set up their lives as newlyweds, a tricky business since both are still in high school and so many people--the principal, Van's parents, Reba's neighbors--disapprove and assume the worst about the Harts' morals. Still, every episode ends with the feeling that everything is going to be okay in Reba's world, even if she has no idea where so much change is taking her. A funny, slapstick sitcom, Reba: The Complete Fourth Season tells the heartwarming story of Reba Hart (played by country superstar Reba McEntire) and her barely functional dysfunctional family. Much of the humor is based on the relationship between Reba, her ex-husband Brock, and his young wife Barbra Jean. The end of season three left Brock confused and wondering whether he might still be in love with Reba. Much of the comedy's fourth year is spent examining Brock's relationship with both his current and ex wives. As played by Christopher Rich, Brock is a well-meaning lunk who'd be difficult to be married to, but is amusing to have around. Often clueless about the differences between the sexes, Brock has a good heart and sincerely loves his family, especially his put-upon ex. As an actress, McEntire doesn't take herself too seriously and has surprisingly good comic timing. Whether she's onscreen with scene-stealing guest stars such as Dolly Parton and Wendy Malick, she more than holds her own. Some of the storylines, especially the ones involving Reba and Brock's daughter and football player son-in-law, drag on for too long. But in general, the writing is taut, the acting is solid, and the episodes leave viewers feeling good, even when the characters are mired in marriage counseling sessions. --Jae-Ha Kim
