Amazon.comOne of the more controversial episodes in the long history of the BBC's Doctor Who series, this 1989 three-part story starring seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy has generated an equal amount of praise and brickbats for its complex plot. In the serial, the Doctor and his companion Ace (Sophie Aldred) travel to Victorian England, where they encounter a scientist (Ian Hogg) whose research into evolution hides his true identity as an alien determined to assassinate Queen Victoria. Platt's script is rich with dialogue and detail that for some fans, fleshes out the hidden pasts of the Doctor and especially Ace, while others consider it needlessly confusing, but wherever one's opinion falls in regard to the script, Ghost Light stands out as one of the more atmospheric stories from the Sylvester McCoy period, with strong performances by the cast (most notably, McCoy himself, who plays down the humorous aspects of his portrayal) and direction by Alan Wareing (his final turn for the series). --Paul Gaita

Stone extensively rewrote an original script by Quentin Tarantino, and he employs a mosaic of different film stocks, video, and pop pastiches to create a sense of blurred lines between visual phenomena. (The background on Lewis's character's life as an abused child, for instance, is presented as a sitcom starring Rodney Dangerfield.) But the result of these experiments is a pompous, even amateurish effort at grasping the reins of a real-life national debate. One almost wants to tell Stone to sit down and raise his hand next time if he thinks he has something to say. Berkley plays a drifter who hitches a ride to Las Vegas, becomes a lap dancer and then a performer, and discovers--gasp!--there's a whole world of sex and violence involved with these things. Gershon is probably the best element in the film, playing Berkley's bisexual rival for the big spotlight on stage. Arriving at Heathrow Airport with companions Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) and Tegan (Janet Fielding), still grieving after the death of Adric in "Earthshock" (1982), the Doctor is soon involved in solving the mystery of a Concorde that has literally vanished into thin air. Tracing the lost plane's flight path in a second Concorde, the travelers find themselves flying through a hole in time into the prehistoric past. Here the Master (Anthony Ainley), under the rather camp persona of Kalid (which strangely he maintains even when alone), is planning to harness the power of the currently disembodied alien Xeraphin, who are stranded on Earth. Echoing both the classic 1960 Twilight Zone episode "The Odyssey of Flight 33" and prefiguring Stephen King's chilling The Langoliers (1990), at heart Time-Flight is a reworking of the superior Tom Baker Doctor Who story "City of Death" (1979). Well, for starters, the initial title crawl proclaims that this is just Star Wars, not Episode IV, A New Hope. Second, the film is without the various "improvements" and enhancements Lucas added for the theatrical rerelease in 1997 as well as the DVD premiere in 2004. So no more critters and droids scurrying around the port of Mos Eisley when Luke and Obi-Wan Kenobi first arrive, no meetings between Han Solo and Jabba the Hut and between Luke and Biggs (extraneous scenes that were cut in 1977), no enhanced explosions during the final reel, and--most importantly to some fans--no more of Greedo shooting first in the bar. Instead Han is free to be the scoundrel and not even let Greedo squeeze off a shot. What do you lose by watching the 1977 version? Dolby Digital 5.1 EX sound, for one thing (only 2.0 Surround here). Digital cleanup for another--Tatooine looks like it's been coated with an additional layer of sand cloud. Yes, it's true that fans who want better sound and picture can always watch the 2004 version of the movie also included in this set. That means starting with "The Man Trap," and soon followed by "Where No Man Has Gone Before," the second pilot filmed and the first one starring William Shatner as Captain Kirk. The many highlight episodes include "Balance of Terror" and "Errand of Mercy" (introducing, respectively, the Romulans and the Klingons), the two-part "The Menagerie" (which recycled footage from the original pilot, "The Cage," which featured Christopher Pike as the captain of the Enterprise and is not included in this set), "Space Seed" (introducing Ricardo Montalban's Khan character), and "The City of the Edge of Forever" (written by sci-fi giant Harlan Ellison and considered by many the best-ever episode of the series). The first-season DVD set is supplemented by 80 minutes of featurettes incorporating 2003-04 interviews with Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, other cast members, and producers, and some 1988 footage of Gene Roddenberry. The longest (24 minutes) featurette, "The Birth of a Timeless Legacy," examines the two pilot episodes and the development of the crew. Slightly shorter are "To Boldly Go... Season One," which highlights key episodes, and "Sci-Fi Visionaries," which discusses the series' great science fiction writers (most famously in "The City of the Edge of Forever"). Shatner shows off his love of horses in "Life Beyond Trek," and, more interestingly, Nimoy debunks various rumors in "Reflections of Spock." As they've done for many of the feature-film special editions, Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda provide a pop-up text commentary on four of the episodes filled with history, trivia, and dry wit. It's the first commentary of any kind for a Star Trek TV show, but an audio commentary is still overdue. The technical specs are mostly the same as other Trek TV series--Dolby 5.1, English subtitles--but with the welcome addition of the episode trailers. The plastic case is an attempt to replicate some of the fun packaging of the series' European DVD releases, but it's a bit clunky, and the paper sleeve around the disc case seems awkward and crude. Still, the set is a vast improvement both in terms of shelf space and bonus features compared to the old two-episode discs, which were released before full-season boxed sets became the model for television DVDs. --David Horiuchi
