It only takes one episode to become very protective of this 1999 British Comedy Award-winning series that put comedy soul mates Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson (now Hynes), as well as Nick Frost, and director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) on the map. One can only hope a threatened American version is never produced. This is one of those brilliant, off-center, lightning-in-a-bottle creations that gets you so jazzed, you want to turn all your friends on to it. Spaced (actually, Friends might have been a better title; too bad it was taken) stars Pegg and Stevenson as strangers Tim and Daisy, "amiable 20-somethings" who pose as a "professional couple" to rent an apartment. He is a recently-dumped aspiring comic book artist. She is an easily distracted writer. As the series unfolds, their apartment becomes an "island of calm in the ocean of life" as Tim and Daisy form a kind of 21st century family with their similarly misfit friends, including soused landlord Marsha (Julia Deakin), who lives with her teenager daughter (aka "the devil in a A cup," who is heard, but never quite seen), Brian (Mark Heap), an artist who deals in anger, fear, and aggression, Simon's best friend Mark (Frost), a militaristic gun nut, and Daisy's best friend, Twist (Katy Carmichael), a fashion poseur (in the series' penultimate episode, look for a pre-Office Ricky Gervais). Spaced is not so much interested in Tim and Daisy's charade as it is in cramming each episode with pop culture references and obscure in-jokes, and brilliantly realized film and TV homages, ranging from Woody Allen's Manhattan to Pulp Fiction and The Empire Strikes Back (Star Wars, especially, looms large in Tim's slacker universe). As with Arrested Development, Spaced benefits from repeat viewings to catch missed bits of business and gags that fly by at a Simpsons-esque rate. This Complete Series set is everything Spaced's fervent following would demand. Each episode is complemented by the original commentaries as well as newly-recorded gabfests that also feature American friends of the show, including Kevin Smith, Patton Oswalt, Quentin Taratinto, Matt Stone, Diablo Cody, and Bill Hader. There are deleted scenes and outtakes, and, best of all, an hour-long 2007 Q&A with Wright and the cast, in which Pegg allows that, had there been a third series (and we can still dream), it would have provided viewers hoping that Tim and Daisy would ultimately get together with "a moment to make every hair of your body stand on end." The interns of Sacred Heart hospital move up to residents in the second season of Scrubs, the dorky little brother to ER with more than a passing resemblance to Ally McBeal. But in this season the sitcom actually matures-- in a good way--in its ability to balance just the right amount of heart and humor. While JD (Zach Braff) wrestles with his feelings for Elliot (Sarah Chalke), Elliot bends over backwards to be included with her colleagues and friends alike (after a character rags on JD and Turk, she squeals, "Do me!"), Turk (Donald Faison) proposes to Carla (Judy Reyes), and Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) reunites with his ex-wife Jordan (Christa Miller), who's carrying his child. The cast melds together nicely, but it's Braff, executing most of the fantasy sequences, who's the real comic find, although he's nearly upstaged (in a welcome bit of stunt casting) by Tom Cavanaugh as JD's irresponsible older brother, a complete departure from his role on Ed.

Season Two's bonus features include some very revealing episode commentary by creator Bill Lawrence and various cast members, who all describe guest star Rick Schroder as "an odd dude" and make fun of his imploring the cast not to call him Ricky. They also spend a curious part of time studying the female anatomy, from Chalke's bra colors to guest star Heather Locklear's derriere to Miller's bust (this observation comes from Lawrence, who is Miller's husband). Braff's fame after Garden State also comes as an easy target in the commentaries, as well as the network's inability to understand the show, such as asking to remove an episode's reference to the Wonder Twins because they didn't know who they were. It's about this, that, and the other. TV Guide ranked Seinfeld the best TV series of all time. It has become the master of its syndication domain. It's always fun and instructive to return to the humble beginnings of a series that became a pop culture benchmark. Here are Kramer's first not-so-grand entrance, Jerry's first contemptuous "Hello, Newman," and Elaine's first "Get Out!" shove. But what is most revelatory about these episodes from the first two seasons is what Jason Alexander, during his commentary for the episode "The Revenge," calls a "sweet quality" that somehow redeems these characters' more base instincts. Consider the scene in which Jerry gives a freshly unemployed George some career guidance, or Jerry and Elaine's palpably affectionate banter throughout. The "Inside Look" episode intros offer fascinating insights into this singular show that subverted sitcom convention with such now-classic episodes as "The Chinese Restaurant," in which Jerry, George, and Elaine wait in vain for a table. The little folks of Whoville, with their natural air of aristocracy, are a kick, and when they come to see Horton as a hero for his democratic view of all life big and small, the effect is quite touching. What is this; Seinfeld? Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer have nothing on Will, Grace, Karen, and Jack when it comes to acting self-absorbed, vain, and downright rude in this penultimate season. But unlike that other New York quartet, Will, Grace, and company are allowed the occasional, redemptive vulnerable moment, as in the season opener, when Grace must decide whether to forgive her cheating husband, Leo (Harry Connick Jr.). In this comparatively lackluster season (its 15 Emmy nominations notwithstanding), Will & Grace seems to be scratching its own seven-year itch. For gay Will Truman (Eric McCormack) and his lifelong straight best friend Grace Adler (Debra Messing), dealing with their self-diagnosed "toxic" codependent relationship has become stale even to them, as they tell their therapist in the episode "The Blonde Leading the Blonde": "Blah, blah dysfunctional, blah, blah, blah, psychologically crippled; we've been over it so many times, we have it on coasters." So why analyze? Will & Grace, this season, is gag-centric Family Guy-funny. We may not recognize the characters at times, but they make us laugh in their own inimitable style. Sean Hayes' in-your-face, get-used-to-it Jack, especially, has been reduced to "a moron," as Will so bluntly calls him at one point. But at least the writers finally found him a job that brilliantly serves his character. He is hired as an executive at a new gay network, Out TV, giving him license to create such shows as the Punk'd rip-off, Pink'd, with an unsuspecting Will as its first victim. Grace's love life is as lorn as ever. In "Partners," she is set up with the spank-happy husband (a gleefully demented Buck Henry) of Will's boss (Lily Tomlin). In the season cliffhanger, she is drawn to a former college boyfriend (Eric Stoltz) who, turns out, is married. Karen (Megan Mullaly), whose own marriage lasted all of 22 minutes, finds herself the target of a former high school classmate bent on ruining her life (Jeff Goldblum). Will, for once, has the most romantically stable relationship with sensitive lug of a cop Vince (Bobby Cannavale, honored with an Emmy this season), but more arresting is his late-season career change that happily (for viewers) finds him rather suspiciously employed by the mysterious Malcolm (Alec Baldwin in what was perhaps a dry run for 30 Rock).

Season 7 is a typically star-studded one, but the personages who appear as themselves (Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson) do not fare as well as those who portray characters. Sharon Stone displays her comedic instincts as a no-nonsense therapist who sparks a rivalry between Will and Grace. Molly Shannon makes a welcome return as the unstable Val.
