In 1940, the cartoon unit of MGM was under pressure to produce more, so story man Bill Hanna and animator Joe Barbera were allowed to direct a cartoon. "Puss Gets the Boot" received an Oscar nomination, and introduced the duo that would become Tom and Jerry. (Tom was originally "Jasper.") The series ran for 15 years and won seven Oscars. Many of the cartoons follow the pattern set in "Puss Gets the Boot": Mammy Two-Shoes (Lilian Randolph) warns Tom that if he makes a mess or lets in any mice, he's out on his ear ("O-W-T, out!"). Jerry overhears the threat and makes trouble. The look of the characters changed more noticeably over the years than the storylines: their rounded designs didn't really suit the widescreen format, so they were drawn flatter and more angular. It's interesting to see how some of these cartoons prefigure the later work of Hanna and Barbera: the underwater antics in "The Cat and the Mermouse" anticipate Tom and Jerry's frolic with Esther Williams in Dangerous When Wet (1953); Yakky Doodle on The Yogi Bear Show (1961) was copied from Little Quacker. In several cartoons, Mammy Two-Shoes' voice has been redubbed, and the subtitles offer cleaned-up versions of her dialogue. In "Old Rockin' Chair Tom," she declares, "If you is a mouser, I is Lana Turner, which I ain't!" The subtitles read, "If you're a mouser…I'm Lana Turner, which I'm not." Whoopi Goldberg discusses the use of stereotypes in the introduction, and these later reworkings falsify history. Amazon.comThe Flintstones was still very popular when the fourth season opened with what may the most famous single episode: "Ann-Margrock Presents." Ann-Margaret, who had become an overnight sensation in "Bye Bye Birdie" (1963), provided the voice for her caricature. During the 1962-63 season, the series had made cartoon history when Wilma became pregnant. According to Joe Barbera, Wilma and Fred were originally going to have a son, Fred Jr., but potential profits from doll and toy sales changed the offspring to a girl. (Ideal's Pebbles doll earned almost $20 million in 1963, and General Mills introduced the "Pebbles" sugar cereal.) During the fourth season, the Rubbles adopted a super-strong baby boy named Bamm-Bamm, who had been left on their doorstep, and provided a playmate for her. Ann-Margaret's appearance led to a spate of celebrity caricatures and spoofs of other TV shows, including Candid Camera ("Peek-A-Boo Camera") and Sing Along with Mitch ("Hum Along with Herman" in "The Flintstone Canaries"). "Ladies Night at the Lodge" feels like an old I Love Lucy episode, as Betty and Wilma sneak into the Water Buffalo Lodge and get paddled for their pains. Many observers noted The Flintstones was essentially Jackie Gleason's The Honeymooners in caveman costume, but the TV parodies and the reliance on such gimmicks as aliens producing robotic versions of Fred in "Ten Little Flintstones" make it clear that the show was running out of gas. Amazon.comSuperman: The Animated Series, Volume Three, would sadly be the final run of this great animated series before getting cancelled. In this season the show was beginning to take on a daring new direction, which some might say was more grim (like the episode "Unity") and a bit darker than past Superman incarnations. The stories were also becoming more challenging and interesting, ending with Superman and Lois Lane locking lips. But the change to the formula was definitely an asset to the series giving Superman yet another modern facelift. The most notable change was the addition of the super villains from Jack Kirby’s Fourth World. Since Superman was such a "superhero" it was really tough to find villains to fight him on an equal playing field. Kirby’s Darkseid and Planet of the Apokolips characters provided some cool villains that could compete with Superman punch for punch, adding a mysterious, dark element to the Superman mythos. These characters make up some of the best episodes of the season including the great two part episodes "Apokolips…Now!," "Little Girl Lost" and " the series finale "Legacy." Other notable changes were the inclusion of some superguest stars such as Aquaman and Green Lantern, as well as the introduction of Supergirl to the series. --Rob Bracco

Where the first season focuses on introducing Superman, Metropolis, and a few key bad guys, season two is all about the villains. Overall, it was a pretty good show, but getting stale very fast. In 1978, the superhero animation bar was raised high when the first (and only) season of Challenge of the Super Friends hit the Saturday morning circuit. Immediately these 16 episodes made up the best that Super Friends had to offer for one reason alone: the creation of the Legion of Doom, banding together the 13 most sinister villains of all-time from remote galaxies. Led by the sinister genius of Lex Luthor, the Legion of Doom was dedicated to take over the universe, and only the Super Friends, led by Superman, Wonder Woman and the Dynamic Duo, dared to challenge this intergalactic threat and bring them to justice. There is no denying that animated superhero shows have come a long way since Super Friends. The Challenge of the Super Friends is very '70s in presentation, riddled with inconsistencies and drawing mistakes, and allowing heroes to fly even if they couldn't fly in the comics. However, there is no denying the staying power of the stories, its concept, the superheroes/villains pairing and its overall charm. Included in this set are a couple of nice features, particularly the superheroes/villains biographies, each with their own mini-video. There is also a good, brief documentary of today's comic book and TV show creators reflecting on their impressions of Challenge of the Super Friends and its influence on their careers.
