Poor Kiyone! She graduated second in her class at the Galactic Police Force Academy and finds herself assigned to the backwater planet Earth with her well-intentioned but ditzy partner Mihoshi. Rather than stay at the Masaki home in rural Japan with the rest of the interstellar freeloaders, Mihoshi and Kiyone get an apartment in Tokyo, taking part-time jobs to pay the rent. Mihoshi inadvertently wreaks havoc wherever she goes, from construction sites to fast food restaurants, but karaoke bars provide a welcome break from these fiascoes.

The funniest episode in this collection of the first "Tenchi" broadcast series is "No Need for a Carnival." The women from outer space pitch in at the Masaki Family Shrine harvest festival with predictably disastrous results. Space pirate Ryoko and Jurai Princess Ayeka set up rival shooting galleries, with little figures of each other as the targets. Super-genius Washu creates a haunted house that's a little too realistic for Tenchi, and when Mihoshi makes Sasami a cotton candy, she creates a tsunami of pink spun sugar that engulfs the entire carnival. It's all very silly in the special way that "Tenchi" fans on both sides of the Pacific expect.

Rated for ages 13 and up for brief nudity, minor profanity, and some scary imagery in the fun house. --Charles Solomon

The day before Easter, Granny reads the story of the Easter Bunny to her young Looney Tunes charges with predictable reactions: cynic Daffy scoffs at the notion; Sylvester, Tweety, Taz, and Lola are entranced; and Bugs is on the fence. A prolonged argument ensues, and during naptime the four youngest sneak out to search for the egg-bearing bunny. Thoughtful Bugs paints rocks to placate the younger ones, but on Easter morning all is well when the real Easter rabbit delivers the goodies. This hour-long movie is loaded with cheery songs, pastel colors, and a surprising number of teaching moments. Tenchi and the gang are still on the run from the usurping junta on the planet Jurai, but the filmmakers seem to lose track of that story line in these three episodes. While Washu repairs the engines in "No Need for Hunger," Ryoko is dispatched to a nearby planet to buy groceries for the hungry crew. After eating, drinking, and gambling her way through the cash on hand, she robs the local branch of the Bank of Jurai--and brings the Galactic Police out in force. Sasami strikes up a friendship with Mirei, the lonely ghost of a little girl in episode 18. They share some special adventures, and Sasami's image appears in an old photograph of Mirei, indicating the strength of their bond. A pair of two-bit punks hijacks Kiyoni's spaceship Yagami--with Tenchi's father and grandfather still aboard playing chess--in "No Need for Runaways."
