DescriptionTireless social climber Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced "Bouquet," of course) puts her best foot forward in the second season of this wildly popular high-class comedy. This disc includes four holiday specials: A Holiday from Hyacinth, Sea Fever, Angel Gabriel Blue, and Historical Pageant, as well as cast bios, a "Funny Women" documentary featuring Patricia Routledge and 5 bonus comedy sketches starring Patricia Routledge . DVD Features: Biographies TV Special:Funny Women: Profile of Patricia Routledge
Amazon.comThis holiday-themed set begins with Hyacinth dressing poor Richard up as Father Christmas and ends with Hyacinth in the same outfit kissing Onslow under the mistletoe. How one gets from the first to last makes up "A Very Merry Hyacinth." Then it's time for "Sea Fever" aboard the QE2 in a double-episode that finds Hyacinth packing mounds of luggage and dressing "like a celebrity" only to miss the boat. When she and Richard finally catch up to the ship, they are astounded to see Onslow and Daisy aboard getting the royal treatment. One of the more hysterical episodes, it features Hyacinth and Richard in jogging outfits running through the ship and ends with Hyacinth and Onslow in an energetic jitterbug. In the remaining episodes Hyacinth decides to redo her kitchen, Daddy rents his bed out, and volunteers for the church play suffer a mysterious rash of illnesses when obliviously bossy Hyacinth takes over. --Kimberly Heinrichs

DescriptionThe lyrically funny romance of Jean and Lionel continues its whimsical course in the Reunion Specials as Jean Pargetter's (Dame Judi Dench) great anticipation for grandchildren is revealed much to husband Lionel's (Geoffrey Palmer) dismay. With son-in-law Alistair and daughter Judy having problems things don't look too promising. But will Jean's dream of becoming a grandmother come true when Sandy and her husband Harry return from Canada? Amazon.comThe rich, textured chemistry of Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer remains a pleasure in this two-episode reunion special of the beloved British sitcom As Time Goes By, the ongoing story of a couple that lost touch in their youth and rediscovered their love later in life. Made three years after the last season but starting right where the last episode left off, Part 1 begins with Jean (Dench, Mrs. Brown) feathering the nest for grandchildren, even though Lionel (Palmer, He Knew He Was Right) points out that neither Judy (Moira Brooker) nor Sandy (Jenny Funnell) have gotten pregnant yet. It turns out that Judy and Alistair (Philip Bretherton) have been trying, with no results, and Judy suspects the problem may be Alistair--who is wildly overcompensating to prove his virility. Meanwhile, Sandy is upset because Harry (David Michaels) seeks a promotion that may put him in harm's way. And in the middle of all this, Lionel gets a very unexpected visitor from Africa. If you're unfamiliar with As Time Goes By, this is not the place to start--the great pleasure to be had from these episodes comes from having watched the wonderful development of these characters over the nine previous series. As ever, the humor is subtle, gentle, but always psychologically apt and acted with deft aplomb. Dench and Palmer are compelling and delightful as a married couple who may find each other exasperating yet never fall out of love. Also included are outtakes from throughout the previous series and a short but charming documentary that follows the creation of an episode--the marriage of Judy and Alistair--from the first read-through to the final filming in front of an audience. Fans will be thrilled to get a glimpse of Bob Larbey and Sydney Lotterby, the two men who respectively wrote and directed every single episode of the show from the beginning. --Bret Fetzer

Product DescriptionStudio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 09/02/2008 Run time: 150 minutes Rating: Nr Amazon.comCrystalline aliens lurk in their ship in the vicinity of the shield that keeps Gallifrey safe from its enemies, and the Doctor, in his Tom Baker incarnation, is engaged in highly suspicious negotiations with them. As he takes his seat as president of the Time Lords Council and displays ever-increasing signs of paranoia, expelling Leela (Louise Jameson) to the barren area outside the Time Lords' citadel, could it be that he has turned to the dark side? Or is this all a cunning plan? This is one of the most inventive of the Doctor's adventures back home on Gallifrey, with nicely judged portrayals of the senior Time Lord bureaucracy, some suspenseful journeys through the Tardis's interior, and a surprise appearance by particularly unpleasant old enemies. The real high point, though, is Tom Baker's performance, more barnstorming than ever before, at times blazingly angry and at times even more terrifying when soft-spokenly whimsical; this is a story line that reminds us that the various incarnations of the Doctor are impressive as well as charming. --Roz Kaveney

DescriptionThe Doctor and Leela visit a mining outpost where the staff has grown all too dependent on their fleet of robots. DVD Features: Audio Commentary Photo gallery
Amazon.comBy Tom Baker's third season in the role the actor had become firmly established in the minds of many fans as the definitive Doctor. First broadcast in early 1977, "Robots of Death" follows on directly from "Face of Evil," which was writer Chris Boucher's debut and also that of Louise Jameson's Leela, the Doctor's most shapely companion (a kind of Neanderthal Seven of Nine if you will). Boucher's second Who story concerns an isolated mining ship on which a series of inexplicable deaths takes place--although as the Doctor opines, "nothing is inexplicable, only unexplained." The Doctor and Leela inevitably become embroiled in events, which soon turn into a sci-fi murder-mystery: imagine Isaac Asimov crossed with Agatha Christie in a Dune-like setting. Add an undercover robot sent by "the company" and the claustrophobic, not to say deadly, setting of the mining ship, and there is a fascinating foreshadowing of Alien, too. It is tightly plotted, intelligent Saturday afternoon entertainment (something that was possible then but is now an unthinkable oxymoron) with a typically strong cast of redoubtable thespians in supporting roles (not to mention extravagant costumes and garish makeup). There may be no Daleks or Cybermen, but this is vintage Who nonetheless. --Mark Walker

DescriptionThis fan favorite three-part series from the BBC is now available on DVD for the first time! Louis Jourdan stars as the deliciously blood-thirsty Count Dracula in this version of Bram Stoker's horror classic. Keeping close to the original novel, the series begins with Jonathan Harker visiting the Count in Transylvania to help him with preparations to move to England. It is in the Count's castle that Jonathan becomes a prisoner, and discovers Dracula's true nature. Many scenes shot on location -- such as the Gothic graveyard of London's Highgate Cemetery -- add extra atmosphere to an already powerful production. Amazon.comDevotees of vampire cinema have long esteemed this heretofore hard-to-see adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel, made for BBC-TV in 1977. Count Dracula puts Louis Jourdan in the fangs and cape, in a version subtitled--and played as--a Gothic romance. This is one of those 1970s TV productions that use film for exteriors and video for the interiors, a tactic that increases the general sense of cheapness about the whole thing (although the location stuff is good, including scenes on the cliffs of Whitby, the port town where Dracula comes to visit England). With 150 minutes to play with, the production has more of Stoker than many film versions include, although there's still some shuffling of the original. It's all a bit slow, and surprisingly cheesy at times, even with the occasional startling image: Dracula scooting bat-like down the side of his castle, or the vampire brides preparing to devour a baby (a scene cut from some subsequent showings of the series, but restored here). Frank Finlay makes a focused Van Helsing--a minimum of camping, thankfully--and Susan Penhaligon and Judi Bowker are respectively hot and cold as Lucy and Mina. Jourdan is effective, although he's off screen a lot and really gets his good bites in toward the end. You'll need some patience, but Jourdan drinks it dry. --Robert Horton

DescriptionCome visit Grace Brothers during the holidays, where there's plenty of laughter in store with this unbelievably quirky contingent of sales clerks. Nothing makes Christmas as special as stuffing four hilarious episodes of this classic comedy in your stocking. Each episode is presented uncut and has been lovingly restored. Also included is a never before seen "On Set Interview"! DVD Features: Biographies:Who's Who (Cast bios) Interviews:Never before seen "On Set Interview" with the cast
Amazon.comThe holiday season bring s out the best in Grace Brothers' department store: Bickering, bribery, lechery, snits, and of course silly musical numbers while dressed in ridiculous costumes. Classic Britcom Are You Being Served? thrives on the comedy of petty squabbles and this collection of Christmas-themed episodes is prime stuff. The four episodes have been plucked from seasons 1-7; in one episode, the staff is forced to dress as fairy-tale characters for a holiday promotion; in another, they try to entertain young Mr. Grace by doing a children's ballet; in another, they apologize for not joining a strike by putting on a full-sized Punch-and-Judy show---and in the remaining episode, the temptation of a large bonus leads the entire staff to dress up as Father Christmas. The pleasure in such hijinks, as with most sitcoms, depends heavily on the audience's indulgence of the characters, but the cast of Are You Being Served? was rich with goofy charm (the effervescent John Inman is in particularly top form). A perverse Christmas display unit, from "The Father Christmas Affair," remains one of the show's all-time comic highlights. --Bret Fetzer
