DescriptionThe Doctor, Zoe and Jamie team up with UNIT to fend off a worldwide invasion of Cybermen. Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart puts you in the picture concerning the action in the missing episodes. DVD Features: Audio Commentary:Audio Commentary by actress Elisabeth Sladen, co-writer Bob Baker and producer Philip Hinchcliffe. Other:Doctor Who is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest running sci-fi series in television history
Amazon.comAn electronics industrialist plots to conquer the world using the cybernetic devices his company makes. You can insert your own Bill Gates joke here, but in this epic eight-part 1968 Doctor Who adventure, the villain, Tobias Vaughn (Kevin Stoney in a great performance, one eyebrow perpetually cocked as he schemes), has allied himself with the robotic Cybermen and nearly succeeds in global domination. This story was a harbinger of what was to come in the series during the first half of the 1970s--that is, the threat to contemporary (or near-future) Earth, with the Doctor (Patrick Troughton) joining up with the quasi-military U.N.I.T. headed by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney--who also provides a newly shot introduction to the story and fills in the two missing episodes that were shamelessly destroyed by the BBC when they purged their archives in the early 1970s). Director Douglas Camfield fully exploits the mood-inducing black-and-white imagery, manages to keep the action going (with assistance from real Department of Defence soldiers on loan), and provides some memorable moments, particularly the Cybermen bursting out of the sewers and marching relentlessly through the streets of London at the end of episode 6. The writers wisely give Vaughn most of the exposition with the Doctor and allow the Cybermen to remain nearly indestructible, mostly silent killers. This may not be the greatest of the Cybermen stories in the 1960s, but the metallic monsters make the most of their appearances here, thus cementing their reputation in popularity as second only to the Daleks. --Ryan K. Johnson

Amazon.comEveryone knew that Jennifer Saunders was funny from her years of comedy specials with Dawn French as French & Saunders; but who would have thought that Joanna Lumley, previously best known as Patrick Macnee's girl-spy sidekick on The New Avengers, was such a bang-on comedienne? In the second series of Absolutely Fabulous, every appearance of human gargoyle Patsy Stone (Lumley, looking like the mutant love child of Keith Richards and Ivana Trump) is a comic tour de force--she slumps into a room like a marionette with its strings cut, unleashes a rotting-corpse grin or a reptilian scowl, supports Edina in every half-wit scheme and leaches off of her like an intestinal parasite. Series 2 is pretty bang-on throughout and manages to give the characters--Patsy, infantile p.r. agent Edina Monsoon (Saunders), Edina's long-suffering daughter Saffron (Julia Sawalha, Chicken Run), Edina's mother (June Whitfield, co-star of many Carry On movies), and Edina's dimwitted assistant Bubble (Jane Horrocks, Life is Sweet)--greater emotional range without losing an iota of scathing humor. Face-lifts, Morocco, alimony, rebirthing, and the death of Edina's father are all fodder for sharp, unflinching satire. But the core theme of the season is the unhealthily enmeshed friendship between Edina and Patsy, which sparks jealousy and backbiting but, when the chips are down (or the champagne and diet pills running low), an undying loyalty. Truly one of the richest and funniest Britcoms of all time. --Bret Fetzer

DescriptionThe foul tempered and wildly eccentric bookshop owner Bernard Black (Dylan Moran) is back for a third season. Black Books concerns the musings, doings and time-frittering techniques of raddled proprietor Bernard Black (Dylan Moran), his shy, multi-challenged assistant, Manny Bianco (Bill Bailey) and their under achieving friend, Fran Katzenjammer (Tamsin Greig). This dubious trio form a family of sorts to protect each other from the realities of modern London, but nothing can protect them from each other. DVD Features: Deleted Scenes Other Outtakes Photo gallery
Amazon.comThe lovably misanthropic Britcom Black Books wrings its laughs out of characters as cynical and crabby as they come. The third series continues to follow the adventures, such as they are, of Bernard Black (Dylan Moran), a bilious bookstore owner who dislikes books and dislikes customers more. The deep-black comedy of the series is built on satire and sarcasm (Moran created the series and is also its chief writer), and no depth is too low to go. In "Manny Comes Home," Black Books' sole employee, the clueless aging hippie Manny, finally has had enough of Bernard's unappreciation, and takes a job at the swanky Goliath Books next door. The episode gets as many chuckles for Manny's fish-out-of-water experience (honestly, Black Books is the only place he can work, probably in all of the British Isles) as for Bernard's flailing and resentment without him. "Up he goes with that little wiggle of his," Bernard sneers as he spies on Manny shelving Gotham books on a ladder, "the wiggle of Judas!" Meanwhile, the sight gags of the deplorable conditions of both Bernard and the shop (mushrooms growing in Bernard's hair; mollusks on a drink glass) are good for that singularly pleasurable combination of cringing and belly-laughing. The extras include deleted scenes (the cat who plays Mr. Benson is a true rising star); a moody black-and-white short called "Bernard's Letter," in which Bernard composes a snarky response to a manuscript rejection; and loads of great deleted scenes, showing that the cast has as much fun on the set as the viewer does watching them. --A.T. Product DescriptionStudio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 03/27/2007 Amazon.comTo call The Judi Dench Collection a treasure trove is indubitably cliché, but that's so much classier than "Dench-a-Palooza." Essential for fans of the great Dame, theatre buffs, and drama students, this eight-disc set is an embarrassment of riches, with nine BBC productions of classic and original plays, plus three radio plays and excerpts from televised interviews, one of which features her moving rendition of "Send in the Clowns" from A Little Night Music, for which she won an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical (is there nothing she can't do?). They etch an indelible portrait of an artist with a compelling presence and staggering range. Judi Dench is one of those actors who rarely seem to make a false move, handling wrenching drama, madcap farce, and witty comedy with equal aplomb. John Hopkins' Talking to a Stranger (1966) is a British television benchmark that is mentioned in the same breath as Dennis Potter's masterpieces. Dench won her first BAFTA (the British equivalent of the Oscar) for her role as a damaged sibling in a dysfunctional family. Dench stars as Anya in Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, a 1962 production translated by, and starring, John Gielgud and, as Madame Ranesvky, Peggy Ashcroft. Ashcroft is a hard act to follow, but Dench pulls it off in a 1981 production in which she assumes the role of the irresponsible aristocrat. Georges Feydeau's Keep an Eye on Amelie (1973) is a carefree hour in which Dench stars as a coquette who agrees to marry a confirmed bachelor (Patrick Cargill) so he can inherit a million francs. This production is paired on disc 4 with writer Michael Frayn's (Noises Off!) award-winning comedy Make and Break, which unfolds at a trade fair in Frankfort and stars Dench as a devoted secretary to a work-consumed boss. Two powerful dramas comprise disc 8, Going Gently, for which Dench earned another BAFTA as a hospice nurse to two adversarial patients, and Can You Hear Me Thinking?(1990), starring Dench and her late husband Michael Williams (A Fine Romance) as parents whose lives are shattered when their teenage son develops schizophrenia. Ibsen's still potent Ghosts (1981) boasts a stellar ensemble, including Kenneth Branagh as doomed son Oswald and Michael Gambon as Pastor Manders, with Dench as Mrs. Alving, whose respected late husband led a dark, secret life. Anything but, Absolute Hell (1991) is a lost-souls black comedy starring Dench as Christine, the proprietor of a bohemian nightclub in post-World War II London. The cast includes her future Notes on a Scandal costar, Bill Nighy, as a washed-up writer. Stardom in the States came late to Dench. This collection allows her audience to catch-up with these mostly towering performances that established her as one of the premier actors of our time. --Donald Liebenson

DescriptionSee some of the most startling wildlife photography ever to have been shown on television! The Blue Planet: Seas of Life features amazing new discoveries and photographic breakthroughs in four episodes. The Blue Planet: Seas of Life #3 features: "Seasonal Seas" and "Coral Seas." Amazon.comThe BBC's landmark series on marine wildlife continues with this pair of uncommonly beautiful episodes. "Seasonal Seas" focuses on the explosion of life that accompanies every annual blooming of plankton, numbering in the countless billions and captured here with brilliant microphotography. The plankton provide a seasonal feast for a stunning variety of creatures, including the gigantic basking shark, sea otters, immense swarms of jellyfish, bat rays, and dancing Australian squid. In massive kelp forests, we witness such delightful sights as white-sided dolphin playing a game of "pass the seaweed." In "Coral Seas" miles-long reefs of living coral are explored, from deep within (requiring brief computer animation) to the surrounding environs, where you'll see white-tipped sharks in a feeding frenzy while beautiful harlequin shrimp wrestle with a starfish. Stunningly photographed and supplemented by an informative DVD bonus interview with producer Alastair Fothergill, these episodes represent a filmmaking legacy that will reward viewers for many years to come. --Jeff Shannon

DescriptionJoin Fathers Ted, Dougal and Jack, three Irish priests exiled by the church to their own private purgatory, a twisted lump of rock called Craggy Island, as penance for indulging their daft vices. With the help of the world's most devoted housekeeper, Mrs. Doyle, they tend a demented flock of island dwellers and try to make a heaven out of their rocky piece of hell. This two-disc DVD set includes every episode from season three, plus the hour-long holiday special "A Christmassy Ted." Amazon.comEqual parts Marx Brothers, Black Adder, and James Joyce, Father Ted is inspired lunacy with a rural Irish twist. This set contains the final season of the BBC series; Father Ted abruptly ended in 1998 with the death of its talented, comic star, Dermot Morgan. The eight episodes here are a little uneven, but the best stuff is classic, laugh-out-loud satire, including "Are You Right There, Father Ted," in which Morgan's titular Catholic priest is re-banished to Ireland's Craggy Island, a green rock replete with paranoid sheep, randy milkmen, Nazi memorabilia collectors, and an inexplicably large community of Chinese immigrants. Outstanding, too, is "Speed 3," in which Ted discovers that a number of babies recently born on Craggy all look like a self-made swinger named Pat Mustard. "Kicking Bishop Brennan Up the Arse" speaks for itself, and "The Mainland" gives supporting actor Ardol O'Hanlon (as idiotic fellow cleric Dougal) a great showcase. --Tom Keogh
