Description

A year after the battle of Waterloo, dispatches from India warn that a local Maharaja is threatening British interests. Wellington sends Sharpe to investigate on what turns out to be his most dangerous mission to date. The last scout sent, Sharpe's best friend Sergeant Harper -- has gone missing and reports suggests that the real power behind the risings is Colonel Dodd, a malcontent East India Company Officer, and that the Maharaja has gathered into his impregnable fort. Once inside the fort things do not quite go as Sharpe has planned.

If the fearless Richard Sharpe is the Indiana Jones of His Majesty's colonial army, then Sean Bean is the dashing, captivating Harrison Ford of the adventure series--handsome, rugged, and charismatic. Bean, who proves here he's every bit the international action star, brings his righteous determination to this installment of the popular Bernard Cornwell Sharpe series. Set in the early 19th century, when the British Empire has a lot of skirmishes to quell and rebellions to quash, Sharpe's Challenge brings our hero to remote India, where a renegade British officer has joined forces with a local rajah, wreaking havoc on civilians and His Majesty's troops as well. At the behest of the Duke of Wellington, Sharpe sets off to India on what will prove a wildly unpredictable and dangerous mission, with kidnappings, horrific assassinations (a nail into the top of the skull is a preferred method), and treachery at every turn. The cast, including Toby Stephens as Dodd, Michael Cochrane as the sneering Simmerson, the delightful Irish actor Daragh O'Malley as Sharpe's loyal sidekick, and the lovely Padma Lakshmi as a sultry force to be reckoned with, are uniformly strong. But it's Bean, with his world-weary demeanor and craggily handsome features, who commands this rollicking yarn. The film, shown on British television, was shot on location in glorious, dusty, romantic Rajasthan, India, and the whole effect is equal parts Raiders of the Lost Ark, Master and Commander, and the American TV hit House, with Bean wearing heroism and cynicism quite comfortably, thank you very much. Extras include a behind-the-scenes documentary and some deleted scenes. --A.T. Hurley

Wildlife Specials is a bounty of BBC wildlife documentaries hosted by David Attenborough, who performed similar duties with the fantastic, 1993 Life In the Freezer. Wildlife Specials consists of six outstanding works focusing on different animals in their natural habitats. Eagles shows us a wide variety of the remarkable, predatory bird in North America, Africa, South America, and parts of Europe. Attenborough explains how eagles are designed to be powerful hunters (they can see prey a mile and a half away), have broad wings that let them float on air, and are highly intelligent and cunning. The program's breathtaking photography and editing make one feel as if a viewer's perspective is liberated by being so closely aligned to an eagle's experience. Footage of bald eagles involved in fighting says more about their natural etiquette than about savagery toward one another, and images of eagles attacking all manner of prey--turtles, salmon, deer, flamingoes--is amazing. Leopard is highlighted by infra-red photography capturing the creature's stealth and power hunting in the dark. But there is also exciting material about bushmen in Namibia whose lives have much to do with revering and following the activities of leopards in their part of the world. Evidence of leopards killing our early human ancestors is fascinating, as is an extended scene in which a leopard stalks a baboon. Polar Bear follows the solitary lives of some bears trying to hunt in the frozen tundra at the top of the world. Females herd their young away from grown males who might be in a feisty mood, while white foxes scavenge after the remains of seals hunted by polar bears. Among startling facts learned here is that polar bears can slow their metabolisms way down so as to hold onto body fat and energy that much longer during hard times.

Humpback Whales reveals that the world's largest mammal can migrate 3,500 miles, from Hawaii to Antarctica and down to the equator. Cows and calves are very close for nearly a year before the latter begin to move toward independence, and grown males can either be nice escorts on the migration path or try to scare off youngsters to get at mom for mating purposes. Much of the documentary is concerned with the famous sounds humpbacks make under water--the cries and moans and clickings that scientists don't fully understand yet. Wolf says a hunting wolf is so strong that it can take down another animal 10 times its weight. Wolves are also highly intelligent and elusive, remaining mysterious despite our best efforts to understand them and how they live. Highlights of the show include great footage of a wolf pack hunting a buffalo by wearing it down over several days. Crocodile says that crocodiles have changed little from the age of reptiles, and are the only reptile predator to outlive dinosaurs. Crocodiles control their buoyancy in water by inhaling and exhaling, and are generally designed to survive anywhere in the tropics. They also, astonishingly, colonize new rivers in other parts of the world on their own, traveling through the ocean to new homes. Special features in this two-disc set include the enjoyable "Great Natural Wonders of the World" and "Greatest Wildlife Show On Earth." --Tom Keogh

Description

Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean, Black Adder) stars as Inspector Raymond Fowler, leader of a dedicatedly incompetent squad of keystone kops in a tiny British town.

Amazon.com

Set in a fictitious British suburb, The Thin Blue Line is the wickedly funny story of a rather down-at-heel police station headed by Inspector Raymond Fowler (Rowan Atkinson, best known as Mr. Bean), a pompous, repressed but well-intentioned anachronism who wants to do the right thing but who is constantly hampered by his own shortcomings, not to mention his blundering Criminal Investigation Department colleagues. Atkinson expertly balances his character's inflated sense of self-importance with the insight born of old-school police values, for which his galumphing, shiny-suited CID counterpart, DI Grim (David Haig) has no time at all. Strongest among the supporting cast is Sgt. Pauline Dawkins (Serena Evans), who also happens to be Fowler's live-in lover--a moral dilemma that his traditional values won't allow him to resolve. He salves his conscience by avoiding sex with her whenever possible, an amusing subplot enhanced by Evans's brilliant performance--she positively vibrates with contained, ladylike lust in a manner only equaled by Penelope Keith in the classic sitcom To the Manor Born. Scripted by Ben Elton, this series manages to satirize provincialism, institutionalized pig-headedness, and dated moral values in one fell swoop, while also being chock-full of quick-fire, Black Adder-esque dialogue. --Roger Thomas

Glenda Jackson is majestic in the six-video miniseries from the BBC, Elizabeth R. Covering the entire reign of Elizabeth I, from her struggles with her half-sister Mary just before being crowned as queen to her death in 1603, the series profiles the life of the Virgin Queen in detail--and with historical accuracy--not possible in the as beautiful, but much shorter, theatrical release, Elizabeth. Religious conflicts, her struggle over the execution of her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots, battles with Spain, court politics, and of course her flirtations with Robert Dudley (portrayed as an almost-comical fop by Robert Hardy) and her decision to remain unmarried are just some of the highlights of this magnificently costumed and finely acted piece. Jackson skillfully captures the capricious moods and incredible intellect of the queen who defied the pope and the conventions of the time as a strong-willed woman, and characters from textbooks--Sir Francis Bacon, Sir Walter Raleigh, King Phillip II--come vividly to life. Elizabeth R (and for those not in the know, the "R" is for "Regina") is a splendid melding of history and entertainment, and as thorough as this series is, you will still long for more. --Jenny Brown

The BAFTA-nominated series about the growing pains of growing old is finally on DVD! Forced into early retirement, Victor Meldrew optimistically tries to adjust to years of leisure with his wife Margaret. If only events -- coincidences, misunderstandings, bureaucratic inefficiencies and sheer bad luck -- didn't conspire against him.

Amazon.com

Think of One Foot in the Grave as a British version of Curb Your Enthusiasm: Cranky, misanthropic Victor Mildrew (the wonderfully bilious Richard Wilson) perceives himself as the only sane man in a world out to drive him mad--a world in which yoga instructors abruptly keel over, a dead cat appears in his freezer, a man in a bee costume uses his loo, and an escaped snake crawls into his luggage. Of course, Victor can dish it out too; he gives a political candidate a severe tongue-lashing and has a vacuum cleaner duel with an old man who's even more cantankerous than Victor. Only his long-suffering wife Margaret (sweet-tempered Annette Crosbie, Calendar Girls, An Unsuitable Job for a Woman) provides Victor with any serenity--even as he destroys hers! Wilson had a long career before One Foot in the Grave (including the series Tutti Frutti, costarring with Emma Thompson and Robbie Coltrane), but this show became a phenomenon, giving a voice of outrage to the disenfranchised (young and old alike) in Margaret Thatcher's political era. But politics were always secondary to humor, and anyone with a taste for scathing invective and madcap plots will bask in Wilson's indignity. Written by David Remnick, creator of Jonathan Creek. --Bret Fetzer

Peter Davison's final adventure, "The Caves of Androzani," pulls out all stops to give this Doctor an unforgettable farewell. Deep within the titular caves, the disfigured, masked antihero Sharez Jek (Christopher Gable) and his regiment of androids are locked in conflict with an army unit and a group of smugglers for control of the life-extending Spectrox. When the Doctor and Peri (Nicola Bryant) enter this labyrinth, they immediately become victims of deadly Spectrox poisoning. The story's numerous subplots involve espionage, betrayal, and revenge, as well as big-business corruption, political assassination, and silly-looking reptilian monsters. And the first episode has one of the best cliffhangers ever: our heroes are executed by a firing squad armed with submachine guns.

Robert Holmes (who wrote the more satirical Doctor Who story "The Sun Makers") here concentrates on delivering a breathlessly paced action thriller, with relentless death and destruction unfolding like in a Sam Peckinpah film, making Davison's heroic pacifism all the more effective. --Gary S. Dalkin

Nominated for eight Oscars in 1986, including Best Picture, and winner of three (Costumes, Art Direction and Adapted Screenplay), A Room With a View is the film that defined Merchant-Ivory as the masters of the romantic period piece. A brilliant adaptation of E.M. Forster's novel, A Room With a View tells the story of the coming of age of Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham-Carter). Longing to burst free from the repression of British upper class manners and mores, she must wrestle with her inner romantic longings to choose between the passionate George (Julian Sands) and the priggish but socially suitable Cecil (Daniel Day-Lewis). Boasting a brilliant supporting cast, A Room With a View isone of the most romantic of romantic comedies ever filmed.

The prestigious filmmaking trio of producer Ismail Merchant, director James Ivory, and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala had made other critically acclaimed films before A Room with a View was released in 1985, but it was this popular film that made them art-house superstars. Splendidly adapted from the novel by E.M. Forster, it's a comedy of the heart, a passionate romance and a study of repression within the British class system of manners and mores. It's that system of rigid behavior that prevents young Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) from accepting the loving advances of a free-spirited suitor (Julian Sands), who fears that she will follow through with her engagement to a priggish intellectual (Daniel Day-Lewis) whose capacity for passion is virtually nonexistent. During and after a trip to Italy with her protective companion (Maggie Smith), Lucy gradually gets in touch with her true emotions. The fun of watching A Room with a View comes from seeing how Lucy's thoughts and feelings finally arrive at the same romantic conclusion. Through an abundance of humor both subtle and overt, this crowd-pleasing "art movie" rose to an unexpected level of popular appeal. The Merchant-Ivory team received eight Academy Award nominations for their efforts, and won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, Art Direction, and Costume Design. --Jeff Shannon

The Aztecs is the first Doctor Who DVD devoted to the long-running British science fiction television series' initial season (1963-64), so it should be a valuable addition to any fan's collection. It's also a very enjoyable historical drama that pits the Doctor against flesh-and-blood antagonists rather than aliens or robots. In the four-part serial, the Doctor (William Hartnell), his granddaughter Susan, and her teachers Barbara and Ian find themselves in Mexico during the height of the Aztec civilization. There, Barbara is mistaken for the reincarnation of a dead priestess, and she decides to use the ruse to put an end to the Aztecs' human sacrifices. However, she is challenged by the current high priest, which puts Susan and Ian in grave danger, and the Doctor must step in to save his friends and prevent Barbara from altering history. Longtime fans and novices alike will enjoy this rare opportunity to view an early Doctor Who adventure. ––Paul Gaita

Resurrection of the Daleks marked Doctor Who's first encounter with his most famous foe since 1979's Destiny of the Daleks five years earlier, and Peter Davison's only full-scale battle with the cybernetic aliens. Weakened by a Movellan virus, the Daleks assault a space station prison where Davros is being held. The Daleks plan to use duplicates of the Doctor and his companions to assassinate leading Time Lords, and further duplicates to take over the Earth. The action is split between the space station and abandoned London riverside warehouses, and is notable for its grim tone and high body count. The duplicate police-assassins recall the Autons from the Jon Pertwee Spearhead from Space adventure (1970) and proved controversial on original broadcast. Also notable is that although the show was designed as a four-part adventure, it was televised in two double-length episodes.

This edition presents the story in the original four parts. Meanwhile there are more than the usual number of name guest stars, including Rodney Bewes, Rula Lenska, and Lesley Grantham. The tale also marks Janet Fielding's final appearance as Tegan. In every respect this is a key adventure in the history of Doctor Who, even if the tense, incident-packed story is ultimately weighed down by too many elements to resolve them all satisfactorily. --Gary S. Dalkin
