Description"Slayers is a slice of old school that’s worth every penny" -- Play Magazine In a land far from their own, a band of adventurers stumble into a prophecy and must once again save the world… but at what price? Meet Lina Inverse, a spunky sorceress with a penchant for fire, who enjoys nothing more than liberating the unearned from those less deserving. Teamed up with her not-so-heroic group of friends, this seeker of fame and fortune finds herself the unlikely savior of a story long foretold. To defeat the coming darkness, sacrifice will be asked of them all… And how does one balance the worth of two worlds, when one must be saved at the cost of the other? 26 Beautifully Remastered Episodes magically priced for only $39.98! Amazon.comThe third and final season of the slapstick fantasy Slayers comprises one continuous adventure, although the complicated storyline stumbles and falters, not unlike its heroine, red-haired sorceress Lina Inverse. In addition to her usual friends--dim, blond swordsman Gourry; chimera Zelgadis; and Amelia, the advocate of justice--Lina is joined by Filia, a golden dragon who looks like a human. Filia recruits Lina because she believes the sorceress is the figure in an ancient prophecy who can prevent the destruction of the world. The improbable quintet must keep a demon-lord from entering their dimension by gathering five ancient weapons, one of which is Gourry's Sword of Light. The plot halts about halfway through season, while the characters get involved in send-ups of "Alice in Wonderland" and "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers." During the latter misadventure, Gourry comments with rare perception, "We're just getting further and further from the main plot, aren't we?" The rambling script allows for the requisite gags, enormous meals, powerful spells, and temper tantrums as characters appear, disappear, and reappear. Entrusting Lina and her pals with magical super-weapons feels a bit like giving Excalibur to the Three Stooges: the Supreme Elder of the Golden Dragons frets, "I still don't know if we should be entrusting the fate of the world to you people." But fans ofSlayersknow that Lina Inverse always comes through in the end, which is why the character appeared insix OVA's, and five features.(Rated TV PG: violence, risqué humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

DescriptionAfter 27 years of planning, Genghis Khan: To the Ends of the Earth and Sea finally captures the mystery and majesty of one of history’s greatest rulers – Genghis Khan. This landmark achievement of Japanese cinema represents an epic undertaking not soon to be rivaled. Genghis Khan: the name a legend. The man…near myth. A soul obscured by his own achievements; Son, husband, father, conqueror. Genghis Khan: To the Ends of the Earth and Sea weaves the saga of one exalted man’s march toward immortality and the battle to unite the tribes of Mongol under one rule. Amazon.comEpic sweep and intimate details flow together as Genghis Khan: To the Ends of the Earth and Sea paints the story of Temujin (Takashi Sorimachi), the man who became Genghis Khan. Though the movie starts before Temujin was born, follows his rise from outcast adolescent to charismatic chief, and ends when the newly anointed Khan marches on the Great Wall of China with the unified Mongol tribes in lockstep behind him, the story doesn't lurch and stumble with every leap in time. Surprisingly, given that empire-building is usually depicted as a boys-only activity, the female characters are as well-drawn as the male; Temujin's mother and first wife are central to this warrior's life and their trials illustrate the volatile conflicts between the tribes. As with any vast epic, To the Ends of the Earth and Sea has its moments of cheese--there's a traumatic death towards the end that is pure melodrama (and historically questionable) and the closing love song is Celine-Dion-worthy--but they're exceptions. Most of To the Ends of the Earth and Sea evokes a raw and brutal world and of the politics and rituals that develop to give life meaning. And of course there are spectacular battle scenes, full of rugged cavalry charging the field and warriors tumbling from their horses, felled by arrows or swords. All in all, a meaty and satisfying blockbuster. --Bret Fetzer

Product DescriptionStudio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 03/25/2008 Run time: 111 minutes Rating: R Amazon.com Tekkonkinkreet (2006) is a landmark in the increasing cross-pollination between Japanese and American animation: Based on a manga by Taiyo Matsumoto, the film was made in Japan at Studio 4C, but directed by American Michael Arrias. The story unfolds in Treasure Town, a scabrous metropolitan slum so gritty it makes the viewer want to clean under his fingernails. Orphans White and Black share an existence at the fringes of an already marginalized subculture. White seems naive, if not learning disabled: at 11, he can't tie his shoes or dress himself. But he has an uncanny sixth sense about what's happening in Treasure Town. Older, streetwise Black looks after White and receives the emotional support he needs in return: They're two halves of a damaged whole. The arrival of a murderous yakuza boss who wants to demolish Treasure Town and build an amusement park draws Black and White into an escalating spiral of physical and emotional violence. Although the ending of Tekkonkinkreet feels needlessly obscure, it's a striking and often powerful film from a first-time director. (Rated R: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Featuring original and uncut episodes. • Includes original audio tracks and original series soundtrack. • English dubbed / Japanese (with optional English subtitles). • Collectible Naruto storyboards booklet • From sketch to screen - Storyboard to animation comparison • Volume 5 Sneak Preview. After barely making it out of the Forest of Death, Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura proceed to the next stage of the Chunin Exam: a one-on-one sudden death elimination battle! Pitted against each other in individual combat, an assortment of young, bright-eyed ninja reveal their true colors and brandish their hidden powers! Can Naruto beat the odds and prove to his fellow shinobi that he's good enough to be a chunin? Amazon.comThe second season of Naruto continues as the next phase of the Chunin exams begins: individual combat among the surviving candidates. Kakashi-sensei seals the curse mark Orochimaru set on Sasuke's neck, but its effect on the talented young ninja remains uncertain. Naruto beats his opponent using decidedly unconventional means: only everyone's favorite knucklehead could turn an attack of flatulence into a jutsu. As the matches progress, the focus shifts from Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura to the secondary characters Hinata and Rock Lee. The offspring of a great ninja clan, Hinata seems too timid to live up to the family tradition of violence, but she fights valiantly against her cousin Neiji. Rock Lee has no talent for the magical jutsu the other students employ, so he's trained himself mercilessly in physical techniques. He's pitted against Gara, the icy trainee who fights with clouds of enchanted sand. Lee and Hinata overtax their resources but demonstrate true ninja spirit--and win the respect of Naruto and Sakura. The struggles of the secondary characters add some emotional depth to the inevitably repetitious fight scenes. The season ends on multiple cliffhangers, with Lee and Sasuke in the hospital and Naruto beginning a grueling training regimen with a new sensei to prepare for the final Chunin combat. (Rated T+ Older Teen; suitable for ages 12 and older: violence, toilet humor) --Charles Solomon

Product DescriptionFollows the adventures of rico carmen & carl a trio of high school buds lured to enlist by the thrill of adventure on distant planets these unsung heroes are unaware that the battle of the bugs is about to re-erupt sending them all to the front lines of the first interstellar war. Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 07/05/2005 Run time: 778 minutes Rating: Pg Amazon.comThe Complete Campaigns is a four-disc compilation of the Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles series that was originally released on eight DVDs: The Pluto Campaign, The Hydora Campaign, The Tophet Campaign, The Tesca Campaign, The Zephyr Campaign, The Klendathu Campaign, Trackers (including the four bonus episodes), and The Homefront Campaign. While Paul Verhoeven's dark, satirical adaptation of Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers seriously strayed from the novel, this Verhoeven-produced TV series--part sequel, part remake, all CGI animated--hews closer to the spirit of the novel, a space-age twist on a World War II battle adventure. Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles is a series of military skirmishes and assignments on a variety of fronts, such as Bug City, water-dominated Hydora, the desert planet Tophet, the jungle planet Tesca, fiery Klendathu, and good old Earth. The episodic nature works perfectly within this framework, and the mix of Marine grit ("No retreat, no surrender!"), military jargon, and understated melodrama give a feel somewhere between the steely seriousness of an old-fashioned war comic book and the spectacle and romance of a Japanese anime space opera. The CGI animation is less ambitious than in such feature films as Toy Story, but it's one of the most impressive examples of the animation made for TV. The detailed designs, rich textures, 3-D modeling, and awesome sense of scale (not to mention the pumped-up action and whiplash speed of the bug army) give it the look of an impossibly sophisticated video game, with the rat-a-tat editing and soaring camerawork of a Hollywood movie. The budgetary shortcuts are evident in moments of blurring and jerking, but overall it's startlingly effective. The PG-level violence may not be appropriate for younger viewers, but it's aimed at an older crowd and has won a loyal adult following. The packaging is very convenient (a shelf-space-friendly four discs in Thinpaks), but unfortunately, serious Roughnecks fans will want to hold onto their old discs. Cramming the eight discs of content plus bonus episodes (granted, Trackers was a short disc) onto four single-sided discs apparently left no room for the producer/technical commentary tracks that accompanied most of the previous discs. The only bonus features are photo galleries and a fold-out illustration. --Sean Axmaker, David Horiuchi Beyond Roughnecks at Amazon.com Listmania: The Military in Space | More Films from Paul Verhoeven | The Book |

Product DescriptionIn Open Season, the odd are about to get even. Boog (Martin Lawrence), a domesticated grizzly bear with no survival skills, has his perfect world turned upside down when he meets Elliot (Ashton Kutcher) a scrawny, fast-talking mule deer. When Elliot convinces Boog to leave his cushy home in a park ranger's garage to try a taste of the great outdoors, things quickly spiral out of control. Relocated to the forest with open season only three days away, Boog and Elliot must acclimate in a hurry. They must join forces to unite the woodland creatures and take the forest back. Amazon.com Growing up can be a confusing journey fraught with difficult choices. Boog (Martin Lawrence) is a domesticated Grizzly Bear who leads a perfectly happy life inside of Park Ranger Beth's (Debra Messing) garage, but a chance meeting with an overly energetic mule deer named Elliot (Ashton Kutcher) quickly changes everything and lands Boog high in the forest a few days before the opening of hunting season. Devoid of even the most basic survival skills, Boog and Elliot stumble through the woods and find themselves at the mercy of every forest animal from skunks to chipmunks as well as an evil hunter named Shaw (Gary Sinise). After unintentionally inciting and endangering an entire forest full of clever animals, Boog and Elliot come to the realization that only by banding together do the forest animals stand a chance of outsmarting the hunters and ensuring their own survival.

This first animated film from Sony Pictures Animation takes its inspiration from cartoonist Steve Moore (In the Bleachers) and features animals with human-like intelligence, a vibrant color palate, and skilled animation that makes everything from the wind blowing Boo's fur to the animals' wild trip down the falls simply breathtaking. While it doesn't quite live up to Over the Hedge, Open Season is an entertaining production that explores the difficult process of maturation, the universal need for acceptance, and the true value of friendship. Special features include a 15-minute featurette about the animation process at Sony Pictures Animation and Image Works, a 7-minute look at the recording sessions featuring the voices behind the characters, two deleted scenes, three short animated cartoon strips, a short "Boog and Elliot's Midnight Bun Run" that's an extension of the trailer scene in the movie, art gallery, beat boards, humorous commentary from the animals' point of views, and a full length commentary by Producer Michelle Murdocca, Directors Roger Allers and Jill Culton, and others. Activities include a "Voice-A-Rama" where viewers can hear specific lines spoken by alternate voices and a trivia "Wheel of Fortune--Forest Edition" as well as a DVD-ROM link to more online fun.
