Product DescriptionAges past the Forest was awakened and the Moon unleashed a ravenous Beast upon the Earth. Man cowered in fear...Three hundred years later the landscape of the world has been drastically rewritten. The remnants of humanity are divided as never before. Half seek a tenuous coexistence with the Forest half seek to dominate and subdue that which they cannot understand.Agito the son of an aged hero inadvertently sets in motion the destruction of all that is left when he revives the young Toola from her timeless slumber. Unable to reconcile life as she once knew it from the world as it is now Toola calls forth ancient technology to reshape the future from the ashes of the past. With the blessing of the Forest Agito must first save the girl from herself in order to rescue them all. Amazon.comOutstanding animation and a compelling environmental message make Origin: Spirits of the Past an above-average anime feature, especially for younger viewers. Despite an abundance of elements that many anime fans will find familiar, Origin distinguishes itself with a story that lends itself (like many anime features) to a variety of spectacular settings. As the fairy-tale story begins, it's been 300 years since terrible events left civilization in ruins. Now, in a post-apocalyptic setting where the crumbling remains of vast cities lie in close proximity to the encroaching forest, humans live on both sides of a brewing conflict. For young Agito, the son of an aging hero, life is relatively peaceful in Neutral City, a community built within the ruins of a once-major city. But when he wanders into a forbidden zone of the forest, where plant-like "druids" protect their world from outsiders, he discovers a cryogenic stasis tube containing Toola, a girl who's been resting in stasis for 300 years. Her father had been in charge of the "Earth Rejuvenation Project" that led to a technological disaster, and her emerging friendship with Agito is threatened when they find themselves on opposing sides of an ideological conflict, and Agito must save Toola from her potentially destructive convictions. He does so by becoming "enhanced"--essentially melding his human form with the forest, aligning himself with the powerful forces of nature. As a colorful mixture of science fiction and "green-friendly" adventure, Origin has a lot to say about preserving our planet in the era of global warming, and it's a visual treat from start to finish. --Jeff Shannon

Product DescriptionStudio: Starz/sphe Release Date: 08/29/2006 Run time: 109 minutes Rating: Nr Amazon.comHayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro) achieved his first international hit with this delightful 1979 adventure yarn. Quick-paced, high-spirited, and loaded with wit, Cagliostro is a dandy throwback to the caper pictures of the '60s. International man of mystery Lupin III stumbles back into the picturesque European duchy of Cagliostro with his faithful and gruff sidekick, Jigen. They will encounter, in no particular order, a runaway bride, a magical ring, an evil count with a dastardly plan, an inspector bent on catching Lupin, perilous rooftop chases, hooded guards with superhuman powers, a well-used dungeon, a counterfeiting scheme, and an ancient mystery promising grand treasure. Lupin deploys an array of Bond-type gadgets, razor-sharp wit, and a surprise up both his sleeves. Despite the hail of bullets, this caper is great fun, never taking itself seriously. Miyazaki's career illustrates how limiting the term anime can be for these films; there are hardly more than 10 live-action films of this genre as entertaining. Far less mean than Hollywood fare, it nevertheless is for ages 9 and up with language and gunplay. The Lupin character has been featured in other anime films, but never as successfully or with as much fun as in Miyazaki's film. The new English-language dubbing is excellent to boot. --Doug Thomas

Product DescriptionIts been four years since the alien-seeking agents averted an intergalactic disaster of epic proportions kay has since returned to the comforts of civilian life while jay continues to work for the men in black who face the toughest challenge yet the mibs untarnished mission statement. Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 06/24/2008 Starring: Tommy Lee Jones Lara Flynn Boyle Run time: 88 minutes Rating: Pg13 Amazon.comMore remake than sequel, Men in Black II safely repeats everything that made Men in Black the blockbuster hit of 1997. That's fine if you loved the original's fresh humor, weird aliens, and loopy ingenuity, but as sequels go, it's pure déjà vu. Makeup wizard Rick Baker is the only MIB alumnus who's trying anything new, while director Barry Sonnenfeld and costars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (as alien-fighting agents Jay and Kay, respectively) are on autopilot with an uninspired screenplay. The quest of a multitentacled alien--on Earth in the form of Lara Flynn Boyle--for the light of Zartha requires Jay to deneuralize Kay, whose restored memory contains the key to saving the planet. The tissue-thin premise allows all varieties of special effects--mostly familiar, with some oddly hilarious new stuff tossed in for good measure. Certainly enjoyable as a popcorn distraction, but the MIB magic has worn a bit thin. --Jeff Shannon

Product DescriptionStudio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 10/23/2007 Run time: 86 minutes Rating: Pg Amazon.com Growing up can be a confusing journey fraught with difficult choices. Boog (Martin Lawrence) is a domesticated Grizzly Bear who leads a perfectly happy life inside of Park Ranger Beth's (Debra Messing) garage, but a chance meeting with an overly energetic mule deer named Elliot (Ashton Kutcher) quickly changes everything and lands Boog high in the forest a few days before the opening of hunting season. Devoid of even the most basic survival skills, Boog and Elliot stumble through the woods and find themselves at the mercy of every forest animal from skunks to chipmunks as well as an evil hunter named Shaw (Gary Sinise). After unintentionally inciting and endangering an entire forest full of clever animals, Boog and Elliot come to the realization that only by banding together do the forest animals stand a chance of outsmarting the hunters and ensuring their own survival.

This first animated film from Sony Pictures Animation takes its inspiration from cartoonist Steve Moore (In the Bleachers) and features animals with human-like intelligence, a vibrant color palate, and skilled animation that makes everything from the wind blowing Boo's fur to the animals' wild trip down the falls simply breathtaking. While it doesn't quite live up to Over the Hedge, Open Season is an entertaining production that explores the difficult process of maturation, the universal need for acceptance, and the true value of friendship. Special features include a 15-minute featurette about the animation process at Sony Pictures Animation and Image Works, a 7-minute look at the recording sessions featuring the voices behind the characters, two deleted scenes, three short animated cartoon strips, a short "Boog and Elliot's Midnight Bun Run" that's an extension of the trailer scene in the movie, art gallery, beat boards, humorous commentary from the animals' point of views, and a full length commentary by Producer Michelle Murdocca, Directors Roger Allers and Jill Culton, and others. Activities include a "Voice-A-Rama" where viewers can hear specific lines spoken by alternate voices and a trivia "Wheel of Fortune--Forest Edition" as well as a DVD-ROM link to more online fun. Description"A time-honored fantasy parody…" --- Sci-Fi Magazine In a land beset by the forces of evil, a solitary light shines forth with the hope of salvation… but that’s a far different story! Meet Lina Inverse, a spunky sorceress with a penchant for fire, who enjoys nothing more than liberating the unearned from those less deserving. Teamed up her strapping, yet strapped for brains, faithful sidekick Gourry, her ambitious young protégé, Amelia, and the ever-stoic Zelgadis, this ragtag team of misfit adventurers set out in search of a cure and end up on a quest to save the world. Together they find more trouble than they could possibly hope for, and nowhere near enough plunder! Season Two contains 26 remastered episodes Amazon.com The second season of the knockabout fantasy Slayers continues the wacky misadventures of red-haired arch-sorceress Lina Inverse. As she wanders in search of the ancient book of spells the Claire Bible, she's accompanied by her usual friends: dumb blond swordsman Gourry; Zelgadis, the once-human chimera; and Amelia, the single-minded champion of justice. The zany quartet is joined by Martina, who fancies herself something of a rival to Lina, and by the mysterious and powerful priest Xellos. The plot rambles and stumbles along, with Lina and her friends following false clues, falling into slapstick disasters, and eating everything in sight. A more serious storyline gradually emerges that involves enmities left over from the War of the Monsters' Fall, one thousand years earlier. It climaxes in a take-no-prisoners battle that requires Lina to summon the spirit of primordial chaos. The filmmakers make the battle a bit too big. Lina Inverse isn't a complete idiot, like Excel in Excel Saga: she possesses formidable powers. But she's essentially a comic character who blows up things by mistake, overeats, and squabbles with her friends: Amelia calls her "chaos and destruction's poster girl." She's not the person most audiences would want guarding the world from annihilation. But the overblown finale probably won't bother the many fans of Slayers, who kept the characters going for three broadcast seasons, six OVAs, and five features. (Rated TV PG: violence, brief nudity, risqué humor) --Charles Solomon

DescriptionThe fifth installment of the phenomenally successful POKEMON series takes place in a mysterious city on water. Set against a baffling maze of canals and alleyways, Ash, Pikachu, the rest of the gang take on a slick new pair of thieves in this glamorous, high-stakes adventure story. The film introduces two new Pokemon characters -- Latias and Latios, who possess strong psychic abilities and the power to disguise themselves as humans! Amazon.comThe fifth Pokémon movie takes Ash, Misty, Brock, and Pikachu to the city of Altomare, a thinly disguised Venice guarded by the shape-shifting Pokémon Latios and Latias. Two new agents of Giovanni's, Annie and Oakley, are out to capture these rare Pokémon--reducing Team Rocket to the role of spectators. Latios and Latias are linked to an elaborate, computer-generated mechanism that defends the city, controls the tides and brings fossil Pokémon back to life. Ash and Pikachu foil the evil plan with some help from Misty, Brock, and Bianca, a girl who lives in Altomare with her kindly grandfather. The contrived story suggests that as far as features are concerned, the Pokémon franchise has pretty much run dry. (The film earned less than $1 million in its U.S. theatrical release.) Extras include a Camp Pikachu short and a Pokémon Heroes trivia game. (Rated G, all ages: minor cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon
