Outstanding animation and a compelling environmental message make Origin: Spirits of the Past an above-average anime feature, especially for younger viewers. Despite an abundance of elements that many anime fans will find familiar, Origin distinguishes itself with a story that lends itself (like many anime features) to a variety of spectacular settings. As the fairy-tale story begins, it's been 300 years since terrible events left civilization in ruins. Now, in a post-apocalyptic setting where the crumbling remains of vast cities lie in close proximity to the encroaching forest, humans live on both sides of a brewing conflict. For young Agito, the son of an aging hero, life is relatively peaceful in Neutral City, a community built within the ruins of a once-major city. But when he wanders into a forbidden zone of the forest, where plant-like "druids" protect their world from outsiders, he discovers a cryogenic stasis tube containing Toola, a girl who's been resting in stasis for 300 years. Her father had been in charge of the "Earth Rejuvenation Project" that led to a technological disaster, and her emerging friendship with Agito is threatened when they find themselves on opposing sides of an ideological conflict, and Agito must save Toola from her potentially destructive convictions. Quick-paced, high-spirited, and loaded with wit, Cagliostro is a dandy throwback to the caper pictures of the '60s. International man of mystery Lupin III stumbles back into the picturesque European duchy of Cagliostro with his faithful and gruff sidekick, Jigen. They will encounter, in no particular order, a runaway bride, a magical ring, an evil count with a dastardly plan, an inspector bent on catching Lupin, perilous rooftop chases, hooded guards with superhuman powers, a well-used dungeon, a counterfeiting scheme, and an ancient mystery promising grand treasure. Lupin deploys an array of Bond-type gadgets, razor-sharp wit, and a surprise up both his sleeves. Despite the hail of bullets, this caper is great fun, never taking itself seriously. Miyazaki's career illustrates how limiting the term anime can be for these films; there are hardly more than 10 live-action films of this genre as entertaining. Far less mean than Hollywood fare, it nevertheless is for ages 9 and up with language and gunplay. The Lupin character has been featured in other anime films, but never as successfully or with as much fun as in Miyazaki's film. The new English-language dubbing is excellent to boot. --Doug Thomas

More remake than sequel, Men in Black II safely repeats everything that made Men in Black the blockbuster hit of 1997. That's fine if you loved the original's fresh humor, weird aliens, and loopy ingenuity, but as sequels go, it's pure déjà vu. Makeup wizard Rick Baker is the only MIB alumnus who's trying anything new, while director Barry Sonnenfeld and costars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (as alien-fighting agents Jay and Kay, respectively) are on autopilot with an uninspired screenplay. The quest of a multitentacled alien--on Earth in the form of Lara Flynn Boyle--for the light of Zartha requires Jay to deneuralize Kay, whose restored memory contains the key to saving the planet. The tissue-thin premise allows all varieties of special effects--mostly familiar, with some oddly hilarious new stuff tossed in for good measure. Certainly enjoyable as a popcorn distraction, but the MIB magic has worn a bit thin. --Jeff Shannon

Growing up can be a confusing journey fraught with difficult choices. This first animated film from Sony Pictures Animation takes its inspiration from cartoonist Steve Moore (In the Bleachers) and features animals with human-like intelligence, a vibrant color palate, and skilled animation that makes everything from the wind blowing Boo's fur to the animals' wild trip down the falls simply breathtaking. While it doesn't quite live up to Over the Hedge, Open Season is an entertaining production that explores the difficult process of maturation, the universal need for acceptance, and the true value of friendship. The second season of the knockabout fantasy Slayers continues the wacky misadventures of red-haired arch-sorceress Lina Inverse. As she wanders in search of the ancient book of spells the Claire Bible, she's accompanied by her usual friends: dumb blond swordsman Gourry; Zelgadis, the once-human chimera; and Amelia, the single-minded champion of justice. The zany quartet is joined by Martina, who fancies herself something of a rival to Lina, and by the mysterious and powerful priest Xellos. The plot rambles and stumbles along, with Lina and her friends following false clues, falling into slapstick disasters, and eating everything in sight. A more serious storyline gradually emerges that involves enmities left over from the War of the Monsters' Fall, one thousand years earlier. It climaxes in a take-no-prisoners battle that requires Lina to summon the spirit of primordial chaos. The filmmakers make the battle a bit too big. Lina Inverse isn't a complete idiot, like Excel in Excel Saga: she possesses formidable powers. But she's essentially a comic character who blows up things by mistake, overeats, and squabbles with her friends: Amelia calls her "chaos and destruction's poster girl." She's not the person most audiences would want guarding the world from annihilation. But the overblown finale probably won't bother the many fans of Slayers, who kept the characters going for three broadcast seasons, six OVAs, and five features.
