Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 09/25/2007 Starring: John Travolta Kirstie Alley Run time: 80 minutes Rating: Pg13 Amazon.comIf nothing else, the powers that be behind this terrible sequel to the 1989 hit Look Who's Talking will be divinely punished for abusing John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" on the soundtrack. Until then, it's better to push memories of this movie to the back of one's memory. John Travolta and Kirstie Alley reprise their roles from the earlier film, but this time their married relationship is in trouble for sundry reasons. Adding to that complication is the arrival of a new baby (whined by Roseanne Barr) to join the previous one (quipped by Bruce Willis). Mel Brooks and Damon Wayans add their voices to those of some other kids, but this hastily patched-together follow-up wouldn't be funny no matter how may comic minds you threw in the mix. Between the shoddy script and miscasting of Barr, there's enough doom to go around in this thing, but an opening-credits sequence that manages, through crummy special effects, to turn a sperm's path toward an egg into a nauseating experience doesn't help. Stick with the original. --Tom Keogh

DescriptionA ragtag group of AUTOBOTS led by OPTIMUS PRIME are in a remote sector of CYBERTRON cleaning space bridges when they stumble upon the most import artifact in TRANSFORMERS history; the ALLSPARK! The DECEPTICONS who are only scary myths for many AUTOBOTS are in hot pursuit of the ALLSPARK; now this new band of AUTOBOTS must fight for their lives and the future of CYBERTRON. The AUTOBOTS are able to escape the DECEPTICONS and crash land on an unknown planet called Earth. They land in Lake Erie and remain in stasis for 50 years. Meanwhile, MEGATRON, sabotaged by STARSCREAM lost the ALLSPARK and fell to Earth in scattered pieces. A young scientist named Isaac Sumdac discovers him and uses his technology to create the modern robotics industry in Detroit. The AUTOBOTS awaken from stasis, during an emergency. Deciding to help the new organic life forms, they convert into emergency vehicles and fight off a scary creature. Unable to stay in disguise they change into their robot forms able to save the day! In doing so, they become new celebrities and heroes to the humans. OPTIMUS PRIME and his band of AUTOBOTS make Detroit their adopted home and vow to protect the ALLSPARK and Earth from the DECEPTICONS and anyone else who try and cause chaos. MEGATRON comes online during all of the commotion and discovers his headless body in Isaac’s lab! AUTOBOTS hold the key to his rise and eventual rule of the universe! Amazon.comAn entertaining amalgam of the Transformers toy line, 1980s animated series and the live-action film by Michael Bay, Transformers Animated: Transform and Roll Out updates the venerable robot warriors without losing their core appeal to younger viewers. Sold as a feature film but actually the first three episodes of the Transformers Animated TV series, Transform and Roll Out re-imagines the Autobots as a misfit crew led by an untested Optimus Prime (voiced by David Kaye), who find the Allspark (the key to the Transformers' power) while clearing the way for a space bridge. The discovery brings the Decepticons on their trail, and the five Autobots (who include Bumblebee, Ratchet, Bulkhead and Prowl) decide to cool their jets for a half-century in Lake Erie. The action flashes forward when the Allspark is found by young Sari Sumdac (Tara Strong), whose scientist dad Isaac (Tom Kenney) is having some trouble with his robotic experiments, namely a monstrous cyber-cockroach that threatens Detroit. The heroes come to the rescue of humanity, but their actions also bring the villainous Starscream (also Kenney) to Earth for a crowd-pleasing Autobot-Decepticon showdown. As with any revival of an established and well-loved storyline, there's much to quibble over in Transformers Animated--there are fewer players on the board (though the number of Transformers increases over the course of the series), and the change in the characters' origins may raise some hackles among longtime fans (the manic Sari may also be an acquired taste). But as pure rock-em-sock-em action, Transformers Animated delivers the goods, which should satisfy newcomers to the Transformers' world, and also displays a welcome sense of humor. The latter gets a fun showcase in the two animated shorts which make up the DVD extras, the best of which pits Optimus Prime against an inquisitive classroom of children. --Paul Gaita

Product DescriptionStudio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 08/05/2008 Run time: 90 minutes Rating: R Amazon.comAs long as there is a need for adolescent male sexual fantasy, there will be an audience for Heavy Metal. Released in 1981 and based on stories from the graphic magazine of the same name (possibly the greatest publication to simultaneously provoke imagination and masturbation), the film has since become the most popular single title in Columbia/TriStar's entire film library. That's an amazing fact considering just how silly and senseless the movie really is--an aimless, juvenile amalgam of disjointed stories and clashing visual styles, employing hundreds of animators from around the world with a near-total absence of creative cohesion. It remains, for better and worse, a midnight-movie favorite for the stoner crowd--a movie best enjoyed by randy adolescents or near-adults in an altered state of consciousness. With a framing story about a glowing green orb claiming to be the embodiment of all evil, the film shuttles through eight episodic tales of sci-fi adventure, each fueled by some of the most wretched rock music to emerge from the 1980s. The most consistent trademark is an abundance of blood-splattering violence and wet-dream sex, the latter involving a succession of huge-breasted babes who shed their clothes at the drop of a G-string. It's all quite fun in its rampantly brainless desire to fuel the young male libido, and for all its incoherence Heavy Metal remains impressive for the ambitious artistry of its individual segments. Courtesy of producer Ivan Reitman (who'd just scored a hit with Stripes), voice talents include several Canadian veterans of Second City comedy, including John Candy, Harold Ramis, Eugene Levy, and Joe Flaherty. --Jeff Shannon

Amazon.com essential videoThe skillful blending of drawn animation and computer-generated imagery excited anime fans when this science fiction mystery was released in 1995: many enthusiasts believe Ghost suggests what the future of anime will be, at least in the short term. The film is set in the not-too-distant future, when an unnamed government uses lifelike cyborgs or "enhanced" humans for undercover work. One of the key cyborgs is The Major, Motoko Kusanagi, who resembles a cross between The Terminator and a Playboy centerfold. She finds herself caught up in a tangled web of espionage and counterespionage as she searches for the mysterious superhacker known as "The Puppet Master." Mamoru Oshii directs with a staccato rhythm, alternating sequences of rapid-fire action (car chases, gun battles, explosions) with static dialogue scenes that allow the characters to sort out the vaguely mystical and rather convoluted plot. Kusanagi's final quote from I Corinthians suggests that electronic evolution may compliment and eventually supplant organic evolution. The minor nudity, profanity, and considerable violence would earn Ghost in the Shell at least a PG rating. --Charles Solomon

DescriptionAs fate tosses Syaoran and his companions across the dimensions, some of the worlds they visit are far stranger than others… Though in each and every one danger is inherent. First trapped in fiction, the band of travelers finds themselves characters within a storybook where even time bends to the author’s whims. Then chasing feathers down freeways, the group hitches a ride on a bus until things stall and night falls, hell on wheels fast approaching. And with familiar faces found throughout the many lands, times such as these only reinforce one of the journey’s constant truths: There is no such thing as coincidence, there is only inevitability.

Product DescriptionAsh and Brock are back for more Pokémon battles and adventures! Joining them is Dawn, a young girl who dreams of one day becoming a great Coordinator like her mother. Together the three travel through the Sinnoh region, collecting new Pokémon, facing down Team Rocket, and training hard to be the best! Amazon.comThis 99-episode adventure from 2006 features characters, places, and Pokémon from the Sinnoh region, the setting for the Diamond and Pearl edition of the video game. Ash, Pikachu, and Aipom set out from Pallet Town in hopes of winning battles and badges. Almost immediately, they meet up with Brock, who has become a skilled Pokémon healer, and Dawn, an argumentative 10-year-old who wants to become a star Coordinator. Professor Rowan presents Dawn with a Piplup, a penguin-like Pokémon, while Ash acquires a Grass-type Turtwig. Brock befriends a Croagunk, a frog-like Poison Pokémon who slaps him and drags him away whenever he begins romancing Nurse Joy, Officer Jenny, or some other hapless girl. Ash acquires a rival in Paul, a rude trainer who treats his Pokémon with neither respect nor affection: Their competition runs through the series. Most of the episodes represent Poké-business as usual. Ash tries entering a Contest with Dawn, but his focus on battle moves rather than grace quickly gets him eliminated. Dawn learns how to use a Pokéball and begins developing routines for the Contest circuit. Jessie, James, and Meowth of Team Rocket build increasingly elaborate machines to capture Pikachu and other Pokémon, but invariably go down in flames. Ash fails in his initial attempt to win the Coal Badge from Roarke of the Oreburg Gym, but with 82 episodes to go, he doesn't need to hurry.
