Product DescriptionStudio: A&e Home Video Release Date: 08/29/2000 Run time: 100 minutes Rating: Nr Amazon.comThe fascinating British actress Samantha Morton stars as the titular heroine in this provocative version of Jane Eyre, based on Charlotte Bronte's oft-filmed, 1847 novel. The familiar contours of Bronte's story are all here: Jane, the unhappy orphan, grows up to become governess at Thornfield, a gloomy estate owned by the imperious and worldly, but curiously desperate, Mr. Rochester (Ciarán Hinds). While the latter's grasping attentions stir the inexperienced young woman, the gothic goings-on at Thornfield suggest layers of unwholesome secrecy in Rochester's life. Most productions of Jane Eyre carefully reflect Bronte's absorbing balance between romance, horror, and Jane's psychological passage to adulthood. But this 1997 television movie is interesting for its near-reckless emphasis on Jane and Rochester's mutual obsession and galloping jealousies. The dramatic strategy throws off the story's overall tone, but such problems are worth it to see Morton and Hinds explore Jane Eyre's darkest possibilities. --Tom Keogh

Product DescriptionStudio: A&e Home Video Release Date: 11/25/2003 Run time: 300 minutes Rating: Nr Amazon.comThis artfully constructed five-part series offers chilling evidence that American democracy has become a convenient lie; that a conspiratorial coup d'état removed a sitting president and then hid that fact from the American people. This sounds like the stuff of wild-eyed paranoia, but these filmmakers did their homework well--interviews include levelheaded witnesses, suspicious government agents, and Dallas cops present in Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963. Some of the "proof" (especially in Episode 2, "The Forces of Darkness") seems a bit far-fetched, but the sheer number of unexplained facts is riveting. An autopsy attendant describes a procedure botched by meddling Secret Service agents. A deaf-mute eyewitness shares his recollection of uniformed men hiding a rifle and leaving the site of the assassination unchallenged. Eisenhower's security chief, present at the shooting, discusses fatal safety lapses--as well as mysterious shots coming from the opposite direction of the Texas School Book Depository. District Attorney Jim Garrison points out that Lee Harvey Oswald, a Marine assigned to Russian reconnaissance, operated a "Communist" organization out of a government intelligence office. Senator Ralph Yarbrough, present in the motorcade, tells of Kennedy's order to recall the troops from Vietnam--an order rescinded by the Pentagon three days after his death. But the most powerful elements of this documentary are the most personal, as hardened cops confess to lasting nightmares, as senatorial investigators tearfully recall the moment they realized the official story did not match the facts, and as simple bystanders share their lasting grief at having witnessed the gory death of America's innocence. --Grant Balfour

DescriptionWatch the Prime Minister of Comedy at the height of his career in BENNY HILL: COMPLETE AND UNADULTERATED--SET FOUR: THE HILL’S ANGEL YEARS! 1978-1981 witnessed new producer Dennis Kirkland's raucous and rowdy influence on The Benny Hill Show, Benny's receipt of the "Funniest Man on Television" award, and the introduction of the beautiful and buxom Hill's Angels. The Benny Hill Show's pioneering sketch comedy didn’t pull any punches, and this fourth set of complete episodes doesn't disappoint! Chow Mein and Fred Scuttle return in new madcap moments and the debut of Benny's Aussie Digger Blue, film legend Michael Caine, and the Scarlet Pimple bring new hilarity to the program. Never broadcast in full-length form in the U.S., the only way to see the ten original Thames episodes from 1978-1981 in their entirety is through this essential DVD collection. DVD Features: "I Was A Hill’s Angel" Featurette; The Benny Hill Cheeky Challenge Trivia Quiz #4; Interactive Menus; Scene Selection Amazon.com The "Hill's Angels" of Benny Hill Complete and Unadulterated: The Hill's Angels Years, Set Four (1978-1981) are a cluster of fabulous babes who serve both as eye candy in comic master Benny Hill's musical sets and as a repertory company filling out his sketches. For the first time, a Hill fan can get familiar with some of the talented women who decorate Hill's show and even appreciate them for something beyond the obvious. Otherwise, Set Four carries on the tradition of Hill's naughty burlesque act. In "First Impressions," two Irish blokes--improbable guests on a television interview show--encounter a language barrier with the host due to their unique pronunciations: "My friend gave driving tests to girls, and sometimes he would feel them." "He would, uh, feel them?" "Yes, if they didn't pass, he'd feel them." In the very Red Skelton-like "Hotel Sordide" sketch, Hill plays a bellhop who inadvertently gets caught in a raucous fight between lovers, besieged by amorous attentions from comely ladies and the jealous rages of their men. Longtime fans of British TV comedy will appreciate Hill's impression of comedian Dave Allen (down to the latter's missing finger), in a good bit in which Allen can't tell a joke without offending one or another ethnic group or minority sitting in his outraged audience. Other good impersonations include Hill's take on Anthony Newley, Miriam Makeba, W.C. Fields, and, astonishingly, Bob Dylan. Finally, a real highlight of the set is "Women's Lib Television," in which a TV channel devoted to female viewers (a pretty prescient idea at the time) offers such fare as the game show "Sale of the Century." Hill plays the snarky hostess, who engages in man-bashing puns while a sexist male panelist answers contest questions with horrifying stereotypes. ("The three fastest means of communication? Telegram, telephone, and tell a woman.") --Tom Keogh

DVD Features: Exclusive backstage band interviews; Set design concept renderings; Shot in Hi-def and mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound Amazon.com The band members refer to it as their "Nashville album," but make no mistake about it: a fiddle here or a pedal steel guitar there won't change the fact that Lost Highway, performed in its entirety in this 2007 concert, is every inch a Bon Jovi record--not their best, perhaps, but one that is nevertheless extremely popular and embodies all of the veteran band's strengths. The setting here, a Chicago studio with a stage constructed specially for the occasion, is obviously more intimate than the humongous stadiums they fill on tour, but singer Jon Bon Jovi, guitarist Richie Sambora, and their mates (augmented here by four additional musicians) are still one of the ultimate arena bands, pumping out the kind of tunes that inspire the faithful to pump their fists during the guitar solos and sing joyfully along with the big, anthemic choruses that are a staple of the Bon Jovi repertoire. Lost Highway has plenty of those (cf. the title song, "Any Other Day," and "I Love this Town"), mixed in with ballads like "(You Want to) Make a Memory" and "Seat Next to You." These and other songs offer the kind of universal, if somewhat facile, sentiments (life's tough, we all feel alone sometimes, but when the chips are down I'll be there for you) summed up by Bon Jovi's comment about the songwriting process: "Our story becomes your story." Filmed in high definition and sporting excellent sound, the concert also features performances of "It's My Life," "Wanted Dead or Alive," and "Who Says You Can't Go Home." Brief interviews with Bon Jovi, Sambora, drummer Tico Torres, and keyboardist David Bryan are the principal bonus features. --Sam Graham Beyond Lost Highway: The Concert Lost Highway on CD | More Bon Jovi DVDs | More Music Video & Concerts DVDs | Stills from Lost Highway: The Concert (click for larger image)

DescriptionBenny Hill--Britain's baron of bawdy buffoonery--bursts into full bloom in this boisterous collection from his golden fan-favorite era, The Thames Years! Wildly popular all over the globe thanks to his trademark smirk and affinity for comic naughtiness, Benny rejuvenated the sketch-variety genre with his multi-award-winning THE BENNY HILL SHOW. Satirizing everything under the sun, but sanitizing nothing, Benny and his crackerjack team of entertainers invented a squadron of crazy caricatures: lovable imbecile Fred Scuttle, avant-garde French filmmaker Pierre De Terre, and the verbally challenged Mr. Chow Mein. Backed by Benny's half-dressed flock of frisky foxes, THE BENNY HILL SHOW continues to stand the test of time by making the world laugh itself silly.THE NAUGHTY EARLY YEARS: SET TWO features all 10 riotous episodes from 1972-1974. DVD Features: "Benny Hill: Laughter and Controversy" Episode of A&E’s Award-Winning Series BIOGRAPHY; The Benny Hill Cheeky Challenge Trivia Quiz; "Liner Notes" DVD Insert Booklet; Interactive Menus; Scene Selection Amazon.comBenny Hill Complete and Unadulterated: The Naughty Early Years, Set Two (1972-1974), a sequel to the delightful Set One (1969-1971), continues opening the vaults on Hill's burlesque and satiric legacy at the Thames Television network. After enjoying stardom on the BBC, Hill made the leap to Thames at the end of the '60s, where he enjoyed creative freedom and the deluxe benefits of a color broadcast. Set Two reveals no slowing down of Hill's prolific imagination, mastery of sketch comedy, or cheeky wit with that old Brit favorite, the sex farce. It does suggest that Hill was willing to gently bite the hand that fed him, however, as several sketches skewer the wisdom of Thames management. Set Two includes 10 original episodes, never before seen in the U.S. in their complete form. As always, Hill kicks off every show with a "Benny Quickie," or blackout gag, followed by a silly song. ("Oh, Zandoona," a ballad about a willowy young miss, finds Hill--accompanied by house vocal group the Ladybirds--confessing, "Luckily she was blessed with two warts on her chest / Or she'd have no figure at all.") One of the most inspired sketches is an interview with "avant-garde French film director" Pierre de Tierre (Hill), who dismisses heady critical praise from a fawning interviewer. (Calling Pierre a genius for shifting from color to black and white in one of his features, the host is flattened by the filmmaker's response: "No, no. I ran out of color.") Other good things include Hill's impression of singer Shirley Bassey (in a deep-plunging, backless dress, no less), a short film about married thieves (to the tune of Noel Coward's "Little Things"), a lecherous ballet set in a park, and an interview with Hill's crusading, Fleet Steet scandal-monger, Mervyn Cruddy. Another interview, with Hill's slightly dotty Fred Scuttle, is laced with light sarcasm about the state of British TV and, of course, includes much naughty schoolboy humor. (Asked what he would program on a proposed new Thames channel, Fred suggests "A Sale of Two--er, A Tale of Two Cities.") Incorrigible. --Tom Keogh
