Actor: Ultimate Space Experience Amazon.comThis disc is an embarrassment to its manufacturers and an insult to anyone who buys it. The Ultimate Space Experience is a misnomer, to say the least, because this 48-minute disc consists of little more than official NASA videos spliced together in a manner that might courteously be described as haphazard. The image quality is no better than VHS, and in the absence of narration the disconnected footage of rocket launches, moonwalks, and shuttle maneuvers is virtually no different from anything that's been shown many times on global TV news broadcasts. To make matters worse, the entire program is accompanied by random sound bites and cheesy MIDI-composed electronic music, including the morbidly ominous use of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor over scenes of the ill-fated crew of the shuttle Challenger preparing for their disastrous final flight. (Whoever thought this was appropriate music for those images should be severely punished.) Additional features on this DVD are of minimal interest at best, but as one customer comment has noted (see below), the disc could possibly serve as a basic primer for young children. However, even this is a hesitant recommendation, as so many better videos and DVDs are available about the topic of space exploration. Consider this disc a last resort, and even then you may simply decide to use it as a table coaster for your beverage of choice. --Jeff Shannon

On that particular night in 1967, the three astronauts who'd been chosen to fly in the first Apollo mission which would finally lead America onto the moon were sealed inside their space capsule here, testing the system. Throughout the country there was the most enormous anticipation that perhaps finally America would beat the Soviets at something in space. The United States had been under enormous pressure for 10 years, ever since the Soviets got into space first with something called Sputnik in 1957. Americans could not believe that the Soviet Union, which could not even build a reliable washing machine, could have done something like this - put the world's first man made object into orbit - and everyone knew that if the Soviets had a rocket powerful enough to put a satellite in space, they had one big enough to put a warhead on Washington. And then, in 1961, the Soviets used one of their giant rockets to put a human being in space, the cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
