While the previous eco-doc Who Killed the Electric Car? spent some time on the world's oil crisis, A Crude Awakening (formerly OilCrash) builds an entire film around the subject. Swiss journalist Basil Gelpke and Irish filmmaker Ray McCormack have constructed their narrative in a conventional manner, alternating between talking heads, archival footage, and modern-day material, but the addition of several pieces by Phillip Glass is an artful touch (and evokes his work on 1988's The Thin Blue Line). Throughout, a diverse array of experts from the U.S., Azerbaijan, Venezuela, and other countries explain how the 20th century became addicted to "the blood of the dinosaurs," and why contemporary society needs to change course. As attorney/activist Matthew David Savinar puts it, "Oil is our God." As Stanford professor Terry Lynn Karl adds, "More and more oil is going to come from less and less stable places...places that actually challenge the taking of oil in the first place." One of the more chilling revelations concerns the discrepancy between the reserves oil-producing nations claim they possess and the actual amount. These padded estimates allow them to drill with impunity, leading to an abundance of wealth in the short term and cataclysmic consequences once they've depleted their supply of this non-renewable resource. A Crude Awakening isn't exactly a day-brightener, but Gelpke and McCormack are comprehensive and impartial in their inquiry, which makes for an informative examination of a vitally important subject. The oldest profession is probably one occupation that Mike Rowe will never get around to for his Dirty Jobs series. Until then, we have Cathouse, a reality series broadcast on HBO that goes behind closed doors at the BunnyRanch, a legal and licensed Nevada brothel that was the subject of two previous America Undercover specials. Owned by burly Dennis Hof and run with maximum efficiency by Madam Suzette, the BunnyRanch is, excuse the pun, always hopping. There is prurient interest in watching the ladies ply their trade (shown in graphic, but not overly explicit detail), but Cathouse puts a human face on prostitution. What's a nice girl like, say, Isabella Soprano, a former prom queen and honor roll student with an infectious smile and laugh, doing in a place like this? Loving it, she assures us, "I love being able to help people." Anyone looking for a gritty expose on prostitution is advised to look elsewhere. Outside of a couple of women who "don't have what it takes" or the odd this-brothel-ain't-big-enough-for-the-both-of-us personality clashes, the BunnyRanch gals are presented as happy hookers. Variety is the spice of this series. The encounters range from "freaky and kinky to romantic," and the ladies are nothing if not versatile. Nothing and no one faze them; not a just-married couple, a transgender, frequent phone calls and videos from someone aptly named "Diaper Boy," nor even an appearance by Dan Haggerty (don't worry, Grizzly Adams fans, you won't see him "bare" all). Come for the series, but stay for Cathouse: The Musical, a 40-min. special in which several of the ladies put their own provocative and saucy spin on the American songbook, including "Let's Do It," "Let's Misbehave," "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," and "Why Don't You Do Right?" Based on Brian Greene's book, this three-part Nova program should do for physics what Cosmos did for astronomy. Greene hosts the program on the relative new concept of String Theory, a potential (and explosive) answer to the Holy Grail of science: a single, ultimate theory for everything. Part of Greene's (along with filmmakers Julia Cort and Joseph McMaster) genius is the ability to explain complex issues with ease thanks to a generous helping of graphics and humor. It starts with a perplexing anecdote: Einstein died trying to figure out if there could be an ultimate theory. His General Theory of Relativity brought order to the laws of large objects, but could not explain the chancier world of Quantum Mechanics (which deals with atomic particles). String Theory tries to marry the two. Greene and many colleagues give us a history of the quest and how String Theory was "discovered" in the 1980s. The formula has a lot of quirks, the most dazzling being the insistence there's 11 dimensions in the universe. Greene is not as natural as Cosmos creator/host Carl Sagan, but he is certainly friendly and encouraging (albeit it's quite odd for the host to be interviewed at various times in the program). Fans of space fact and fantasy will not want to miss this engaging docudrama, which combines actual footage of lunar walks and interviews of the few men who've trod there with dramatizations of scenarios both exciting and terrifying.

The true way to experience this film, of course, is in its IMAX splendor, but home-theater buffs won't be disappointed. The footage takes the "lunar visitor" along moon's craters and potholes, with nothing but the vastness of space all around. Unseen film shows close-ups of terrain as well as technical infrastructure that may well be models for future moon-living. One particularly scary scene thankfully has never happened on a moon mission, and involves the sudden loss of breathing apparatus. Scuba divers will recognize the "buddy system" of sharing a single air source--and viewers with any kind of claustrophobic issues may want to fast-forward.
