Product DescriptionBallot Measure 9 is a chilling portrayal of a divisive anti-gay campaign initiative and the unprecedented violence it provoked -- such that activists risking their lives were given full-time police protection. For the crusaders on the right it was a simple battle between good and evil. Director Heather MacDonald ducks behind the headlines to bare the passions and strategies that drove both sides. As the level of violence escalates, the documentary acquires the tension and suspense of a fiction film, and its local chronicle evolves into a far-ranging exposé of hate politics that crosses lines of race, religion and sexual identity. Amazon.comA revealing and spirited documentary, Ballot Measure 9 takes a frightening look at a persistent and growing lack of tolerance in America. Efforts are made by the conservative Oregon Citizens' Alliance to revoke "special rights" (a.k.a. equal rights) from homosexuals during the 1992 presidential election. Director Heather MacDonald creates a sense of urgency and tension while covering all sides of this issue, but the viewer cannot help comparing Oregon to Germany in the early 1930s. She includes segments of anti-gay films produced by the Alliance, as well as interviews with those who fought its passage. Because of the sizzling passion on both sides of the issue, this captures the emotional turmoil by outraged gays and lesbians as well as the outrageous claims of the religious right. If nothing else, this doc provides irrefutable proof of the power of grassroots organizations, no matter your political view. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Product DescriptionWith the dawning of the 70s, things were changing, especially in the sex trade. Generic white boxes were still being used to house the forbidden 8mm loops, but things had loosened up to the point that a color photo depicting a scene from the loop would be included within the package. After watching a bunch of these loops, viewers began to recognize recurring faces (and other body parts) among the myriad performers. Many were one-shot deals, but fans were quick to embrace the perennials who showed up again and again. As I was going through the 42P archives, I thought it would be cool to assemble a collection of loops with only the most well-known stars. "So what do we have here?" you might ask. We have the best performers from the early days of historic adult cinema...a cavalcade of the super-stars who rose to prominence in that "Golden Era." I'm talking Linda Lovelace, Vanessa Del Rio, Seka, Tina Russell, Candy Samples, Lisa De Leeuw, Marc Stevens, Johnny Keyes and Mr. 13" himself, John Holmes. They're all here for the first time, digitally restored from the original grimy 8mm film prints.

DescriptionTender and upbeat, THE LADY IN QUESTION IS CHARLES BUSCH is the affectionate and entertaining tribute to actor, writer, drag performer, and glamorous leading lady Charles Busch. From a tragic, lonely childhood lived through classic Hollywood films, to writing and starring in the riotous and raw Off-Broadway hit "Vampire Lesbians of Sodom" at a gloriously rundown theater in theEast Villate, to giant success on Broadway and Hollywood with such hits as Die Mommy Die!, the film wonderfully casts Busch’s fascinating life as a turbulent and triumphant "drag to riches story" (Village Voice). Expertly cut with awe-inspiring performances of Busch channeling the great female actors of classic Hollywood, the film also intertwines interviews with admirers and renowned colleagues who are charmingly eccentric characters themselves, and an original short film made by Busch about his near-death experience. Directed by award-winning directors John Catania and Charles Ignacio, the film roars as an informative, graceful, and energetic reflection on themes of success and failure, gender, sexuality, and the magic of theater. A must-see for theater fans and the uninitiated alike, THE LADY IN QUESTION IS CHARLES BUSCH makes for a worthy tribute to a true gay icon. DVD Features: Featurettes: 1980s East Village Scene" & "Taboo Broadway Opening"; Photo Galleries: Fabulous Fashions & Set Design, East Village Stage & Streets; Theatre-in-Limbo Clips; Short Film Her Royal Escape to Love (2005); In the Life Backstory; Filmmaker Biographies; Charles Busch Biography & Filmography; Interactive Menus; Scene Selection Amazon.comPlaywright and drag grand dame Charles Busch had a classic showbiz life: After early tragedy (his mother died when he was seven) and a bit of floundering, a play begun as a lark--Vampire Lesbians of Sodom--becomes a camp sensation, moving from a hole-in-the-wall club in New York's East Village to an off-Broadway run, launching a vital gay theater with a close-knit family of performers who produce wild comedies with names like Theodora, She-Bitch of Byzantium and Pardon My Inquisition, or, Kiss the Blood Off My Castanets. This adoring documentary mixes video of Busch's stage successes with interviews with Busch and his cohorts, tracing the rise and decline of Busch's troupe (including the deaths of core actors from AIDS), and reveling in Busch's mainstream success with the non-camp play The Allergist's Wife and movie versions of his stage hits Psycho Beach Party and Die, Mommie, Die!. Busch delivers performances that simultaneously mock and celebrate the raging egos and stylized emotions of old Hollywood glamour queens like Joan Crawford and Barbara Stanwyck. Though theater translates poorly to video, The Lady in Question is Charles Busch communicates a whiff of the madcap inspiration of Busch's stage work and provides a detailed, affectionate portrait of this ingenious writer/performer. --Bret Fetzer

Product DescriptionOne record producer, the creators of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and top indie rock artists come together to create a tribute album benefiting the Hetrick-Martin Institute, home of the Harvey Milk High School-the first accredited high school in the country for LGBTQ youth.
Follow My Voice: With the Music of Hedwig weaves the compelling, courageous stories of four students at this controversial school with a unique chronicle of the yearlong creation of Wig in a Box, the album whose songs poignantly echo these teens struggles and aspirations. Audiences around the world became instant Hed Heads as Hedwig, like everyone who was ever young, questions TheOrigin of Love, dreams of a Sugar Daddy, feels like a Freak and curses a Wicked Little Town.
Meanwhile, the little known Harvey Milk School for at-risk youth, operating for 20 years in New York City s East Village quickly became the subject of international news when it received accreditation and financial support from NYC. A furious controversy over public funding ignite passionate self-determination from the kids and a deeper commitment from the artists who them-selves know what it s like to be outside the mainstream.
Through a dramatic and vibrant combination of verité documentation, student video diaries, and rare in-studio scenes of artists recording tracks, Follow My Voice offers a powerful look at this unlikely intersection of youth, gender and rock. Includes Yoko Ono, Rufus Wainwright, Cyndi Lauper, Ben Folds, The Breeders, Yo La Tengo, John Cameron Mitchell, They Might Be Giants and more.

DescriptionFilmmakers Jem Cohen ("Fugazi:Instrument") and Peter Sillen ("Speed Racer: Welcome to World of Vic Chesnutt") made BENJAMIN SMOKE over the course of ten years. It follows the crooked path of "Benjamin" (no last name), an underground musician, speed-freak, occasional drag-queen, and all-around renegade living in the hidden Georgia neighborhood called "Cabbagetown," and playing in an indescribable band called Smoke. The film includes a special appearance by Patti Smith and photographs by Michael Ackerman. Amazon.comIn life, the late Atlanta musician known as Benjamin (née Robert Dickerson) was a jumble of identities--singer, Patti Smith fan, drag queen, drug addict, and wry raconteur. The story of the 10 years before his 1999 death from complications due to HIV makes for an engrossing viewing experience for indie-minded film fans. Directors Jem Cohen (the Fugazi documentary Instrument) and Peter Sillen (Speed Racer) capture this eccentric figure in glimpses of 16mm and Super 8 as he philosophizes and performs with his bands, the Opal Foxx and, later, Smoke. The film's tone turns bleak as Benjamin's health begins to deteriorate, but his resilient nature, and a moving appearance by Smith that provides a coda for his life, brings a bittersweet finale in this fascinating portrait of a deep dreamer. Plexifilm's full-frame DVD includes an extra 40 minutes of outtakes and performances, including affecting covers of Benjamin's songs by musicians Cat Power and Vic Chestnutt. --Paul Gaita

DescriptionA celebration of the diversity of Buenos Aires` lesbian community, LESBIANS OF BUENOS AIRES brings to the fore some of the many voices which have been neglected for too long. From a lesbian soccer coach to a lesbian activist and mother, each of the women featured have contended with discrimination and invisibility, though none have compromised their sexuality. They share stories about their first fantasies, the consequences of coming out, the desire to have kids, and of love between women in a culture of machismo. By establishing an intimate rapport with three women as they go about their daily lives, this documentary provides an honest and sensitive portrait of homosexuality in contemporary Latin America.

Product DescriptionWhile the whole concept of changing ones sexual orientation may be viewed with a high level of skepticism, ridicule and even humor by some, these are the stories of those who tried. Taking a secular point of view, FISH CAN T FLY explores the lives of Gay men and women of faith as they recall their journeys to put their sexuality and spirituality in harmony. Finding that their strong religious convictions and faith seemed to be used against them, these are the personal stories of people who participated in ex-gay ministries and found no cure . This film tells the stories of another side of the ex-gay debate and the role religion can play in one s live. The stories they recall are sad, frightening, poignant and yet inspiring and enlightening. During our lives, each of us embarks on a journey to find our place in the world. Being Gay can make that process more difficult. Being Gay and having strong religious convictions can make that process doubly hard. While FISH CAN T FLY contains candid, fascinating and heartfelt discussions about God and being Gay, there are even some surprisingly humorous events in hindsight. With the current social and political climate, this feature length documentary by award winning filmmaker Tom Murray, is timely. BONUS MATERIAL includes an additional 10 minutes of comments about the making of the film by the filmmaker along with additional interviews, outakes and footage not seen in film festival screenings. Material also contains a brief interview with a well known ex-gay leader.
