DescriptionThe life and career of this film star and innovator whose work includes Singin' in the Rain, On the Town, and An American in Paris are vibrantly recalled in this profile of the driven genius--often narcissistic, always a perfectionist--who reenergized the movie musical and redefined dance on screen. Packed with marvelous clips (including rare footage of Kelly's breakthrough Pal Joey Broadway role) and interviews with family members and Hollywood colleagues, Gene Kelly: Anatomy of a Dancer is the definitive look at a magical talent whose story has never been fully told until now. It's a life to be watched, celebrated, enjoyed. 87 minutes. Amazon.comThis biography of Gene Kelly comes from the American Masters series, and even by the high standard of that pedigree, it's an unusually fine portrait. The clips from Kelly's films are superbly chosen (and in sparkling condition), illustrating his low-to-the-ground dancing style and his sky-high choreographic ambitions. "Singin' in the Rain" is here, of course, but so is his lonely, lovely solo with a newspaper in Summer Stock and his double-exposure "Alter Ego" number from Cover Girl. The documentary is not fawning; testimony from collaborators such as Debbie Reynolds and André Previn leaves no doubt about his vanity and his perfectionism. The best of the interviewees is the actress Betsy Blair, Kelly's first wife, whose intelligence and frankness reflect well on him. A running theme is Kelly's masculine, blue-collar image, which allowed audiences to accept sailors and baseball players dancing with balletic precision. It's the precision of genius. --Robert Horton

Amazon.comThis version of Jean-Luc Godard's 1968 One Plus One caused a legendary confrontation at a film festival when the director became infuriated at his producer's decision to attach the Rolling Stones' completed song "Sympathy for the Devil" at the film's end. Godard's own original plan had been to make a film of the Stones' construction of the tune in rehearsal, and intercut that with a story line about a white revolutionary who becomes suicidal when her lover embraces black separatism. Production problems caused Godard to give up that idea and just allow scenes to fall where they would, allowing viewers to construct the film in their own minds. Be that as it may, this slightly shorter and more commercial producer's cut does not lack in satisfaction by closing things out with the song as Stones fans know it. Overall, the film is a bewildering affair, and that's not at all a bad thing: one's orientation is whatever one makes of Godard's enthralling mess here. Even if a viewer is just interested in seeing the Stones at their peak and at work on their brilliant 1968 album Beggars Banquet, this is a highly rewarding experience. Astute watchers and listeners will note that in an early take of the song, Mick Jagger sings the lyric, "I shouted out, 'Who killed Kennedy?'/When after all, it was you and me." Later, with no mention of a particularly tragic 1968 event in American politics, Jagger has revised the line to "I shouted out, 'Who killed the Kennedys?'" Talk about a startling moment. --Tom Keogh

DescriptionReleased in 1968, Electric Ladyland represented a watershed in the flourishing career of Jimi Hendrix, and today is recognised as one of rock music's landmark albums. The album features some of Hendrix's most notable recordings, including Crosstown Traffic, Voodoo Chile, and a cover of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower. This classic album features archive film footage and interviews with many of those who were there for the ride: Producer Eddie Kramer, Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, Steve Winwood, and Chas Chandler. Track Listing: 1. Burning Of The Midnight Lamp 2. All Along The Watchtower 3. Rainy Day, Dream Away 4. Voodoo Chile 5. Crosstown Traffic 6. Little Miss Strange 7. Gypsy Eyes 8. House Burning Down 9. Long Hot Summer Night 10. Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland) 11. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) Amazon.comCan an effective episode of Classic Albums be produced when its subject's creator has been dead for more than a quarter century? Perhaps surprisingly, the answer is yes. With Experience members Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, additional musicians on the order of Steve Winwood and Dave Mason, manager Chas Chandler, and engineer Eddie Kramer telling much of the story, Jimi Hendrix still stands front and center in this hourlong examination of the making of his most ambitious release, the 1968 double LP Electric Ladyland. The series's usual centerpiece (isolating parts of the multitrack tapes to illuminate the whole) is invaluable not only in demonstrating Hendrix's genius for building performances in the studio, but, by extension, implying how the music coming out of his head reflected his heart. The result is possibly the most moving documentary about Hendrix, and certainly one whose rare bits of film (such as a promotional clip for "Burning of the Midnight Lamp") make it even more invaluable. --Rickey Wright

DescriptionPeter Gabriel's impact on the music world is unparalleled. Included here in this DVD collection are the often outlandish video clips that have accompanied Gabriel's music over the years-18 visually stunning videos that capture a truly remarkable career. Track Listing: Father Son Sledgehammer Blood of Eden Games I Don't Remember Big Time Lovetown Red Rain In Your Eyes Don't Give Up The Barry Williams Show Washing of the Water Biko Kiss That Frog Mercy Street Growing Up Shaking the Tree Shock the Monkey Steam The Drop Zaar Solsbury Hill Digging in the Dirt Amazon.comPeter Gabriel has long been revered for his great songwriting, cinematic soundscapes, riveting concerts, and groundbreaking videos. Is it any surprise, then, that Play: The Videos is a music DVD for the ages? Nope. But that doesn't make it any less thrilling to watch--or to listen to. Gabriel has assembled and polished an evening-filling 26 clips, all of them collaborations with innovative visual artists and directors like Stephen Johnson, Matt Mahurin, Francois Vogel, and Sean Penn. From the 1977 promo for "Modern Love" to 2003's "Growing Up" and much between, it's all here, and most viewers will be pleasantly surprised to find more than a couple videos they missed along the way. The focus is explicitly on conceptual pieces, the lone visual exception being a 2004 live rendition of "Games Without Frontiers" among the extras. Gabriel says in an accompanying essay that "music can stand more repetition than video and music together." Play gives us something extra in light of that: fresh 5.1 surround mixes in both Dolby Digital and DTS 96/24 for every track, with Gabriel/U2 production vet Daniel Lanois at the helm for most songs. (You'll get standard DTS sound from DTS-capable DVD players and, even better, lossless high-resolution audio from a DTS 96/24-compatible player.) The surround mixes are nothing short of revelatory, using all available channels to amplify Gabriel's ambient side while breaking out the percussion in fascinating ways and driving home the music's subterranean bass. --Michael Mikesell

Amazon.comWhen Karen Carpenter died on February 4, 1983 at the age of 32, more than one generation mourned. Karen and her brother, Richard, had achieved monumental success as purveyors of soft-rock soulfulness, aided by their wholesome, wistful looks. After all, these were the hard-rocking, disco-throbbing '70s, yet with classics like "Close to You," "Rainy Days and Mondays," and "We've Only Just Begun," the pair blurred the lines of musical class. But no one knew--or at least talked about--Karen's debilitating bouts of bulimia and ongoing battle against the ravaging effects of anorexia. Close to You: Remembering the Carpenters is more a gracious memento than a documentary and presents a rather biased view, heavily influenced by Richard's opinion and commentary. Beginning with the duo's early major success, winning a Battle of the Bands at the Hollywood Bowl, it's a quick trip through the salad years including the first record deal with Herb Alpert's A&M Records. Alpert calls his initial listen to the Carpenters' demo tape "love at first hear." That appears to be true for everyone who came into contact with them, as band members, songwriters Burt Bacharach and Paul Williams, and singer Petula Clark readily testify. The hits and the TV specials are reviewed, too, but something feels missing from this glimpse, which barely scratches the surface. It's obvious to anyone watching the film that Karen, who really wanted to be known as a drummer who sang, not the other way around, was in immense pain and terribly conflicted. Yet by the final credits, we know little more about her than we did before. She remains an enigma and this peek at her life--and Richard's--feels too protective of her memory to tell the whole truth. --Paula Nechak

Amazon.comThis chronicle of the heaviest metal band of all time will be an eye-opener to those who only know Ozzy Osbourne as that goofball dad on MTV: 30 years ago, he fronted one of the hardest-hitting and loudest rock groups around. An hour-long compilation of interviews, videos, and performance footage that, while short on length, is long on substance, The Black Sabbath Story, Volume One unearths several vintage clips that show the band at its artistic and commercial zenith: "N.I.B." and "War Pigs," filmed at concerts in Paris; a performance of "Paranoid" from Belgian TV; and a rarely seen video of "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath." Ozzy, happily, doesn't have much to say beyond belting out the tunes in his trademark yelp. When a female reporter sticks a mike in front of him after Sabbath's performance at the legendary California Jam, his incoherence is truly sublime. It's up to guitarist Tony Iommi to more lucidly recount various aspects of the band's history. --Kevin Filipski

Product DescriptionStudio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 08/23/2005 Rating: Nr Amazon.comA gore-happy "greatest horror hits" party disc, Boogeymen is a funky and somewhat baffling collection of contemporary horror movie madmen for the Scream generation. Seventeen serial killers and homicidal maniacs are represented in brief but complete scenes, from the classic (Psycho's Norman Bates and Michael Myers from Halloween) to the curious (unknown New Zealand thriller The Ugly) to the preposterous (Wishmaster, Leprechaun, and Corbin Bernsen as The Dentist). Skewed for the video-age horror buff, this is a survey for the children of Freddie Krueger and Jason Voorhees who like their thrillers thick with blood and body parts. Where this scream-a-thon shines is in its presentation: the slickly engineered interactive DVD features optional Robert "Freddy Krueger" Englund commentary, playful pop-up "FlixFacts" trivia, trailers, quizzes, and bite-sized character bios, all accessed from snazzy, smooth, easy-to-navigate animated menus. --Sean Axmaker
