Alex hitch hitchens is a true urban myth - a legendary new york city date doctor who for a fee has helped hundreds of men woo the women of their dreams. The ultimate professional bachelor hitch discovers that all of his tried & true tricks of the trade are no match for sara the one woman he truly loves Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 10/03/2006 Starring: Will Smith Eva Mendes Run time: 120 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: Andy Tennant

Will Smith's easygoing charm makes Hitch the kind of pleasant, uplifting romantic comedy that you could recommend to almost anyone--especially if there's romance in the air. As suave Manhattan dating consultant Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, Smith plays up the smoother, sophisticated side of his established screen persona as he mentors a pudgy accountant (Kevin James) on the lessons of love. The joke, of course, is that Hitch's own love life is a mess, and as he coaches James toward romance with a rich, powerful, and seemingly inaccessible beauty named Allegra (Amber Valetta), he's trying too hard to impress a savvy gossip columnist (Eva Mendes) with whom he's fallen in love. Through mistaken identities and mismatched couples, director Andy Tennant brings the same light touch that made Drew Barrymore's Ever After so effortlessly engaging. As romantic comedies go, Hitch doesn't offer any big surprises, but as a date movie it gets the job done with amiable ease and style. --Jeff Shannon

Strange transmissions have been received from the 3 remaining residents on the solaris space station. When cosmonaut & psychologist kris kelvin is sent to investigate he experiences the strange phenomena that afflict the solaris crew sending him on a voyage into the darkest recesses of his own consciousness. Studio: Image Entertainment Release Date: 11/26/2002 Run time: 169 minutes Director: Andrei Tarkovsky

The Russian answer to 2001, and very nearly as memorable a movie. The legendary Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky made this extremely deliberate science-fiction epic, an adaptation of a novel by Stanislaw Lem. The story follows a cosmonaut (Donatas Banionis) on an eerie trip to a planet where haunting memories can take physical form. Its bare outline makes it sound like a routine space-flight picture, an elongated Twilight Zone episode; but the further into its mysteries we travel, the less familiar anything seems. Even though Tarkovsky's meanings and methods are sometimes mystifying, Solaris has a way of crawling inside your head, especially given the slow pace and general lack of forward momentum. By the time the final images cross the screen, Tarkovsky has gone way beyond SF conventions into a moving, unsettling vision of memory and home. Well worthy of cult status, Solaris is both challenging art-house fare and a whacked-out head trip. --Robert Horton

Can two clueless Georgia homegirls with big hearts -- and even bigger hair -- find happiness, fame and thrills in the swank hills of Beverly? Anything is possible when you are B.A.P.'s

Amazon.com

What was director Robert Townsend thinking? His movies, such as The Five Heartbeats and The Hollywood Shuffle, are sweet, enjoyable little pictures. But this "comedy" about two flashy Georgia women hoping to find money and men in Los Angeles is stereotypical, unfunny, embarrassing, and boring. Halle Berry and newcomer Natalie Desselle are trapped in pitiful roles playing against the distinguished but miscast Martin Landau and a wasted Ian Richardson. B.A.P.S., by the way, stands for black American princesses. There are better urban comedies out there, the badly named Booty Call for one. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Description

Two female runners fall in love while training for the 1980 Olympics.

Amazon.com

It takes a lot to win. This movie is usually considered a classic of lesbian cinema, and that's too bad: its true sensuality lies in powerful erotic associations with running and the sheer pain of competition. The film opens with a memorable close-up of sweat dripping on tarmac, an early glimpse of a visual style which evolves throughout the picture into almost pornographic slow-motion sequences of high jumps, shot puts, and running legs.

The story follows a young runner (Mariel Hemingway) from a clueless start in the 1976 Olympic trials through a vexed affair with her mentor-competitor (Olympic runner Patrice Donnelly) to a final, triumphant qualifying race for the boycotted 1980 Moscow games. The human elements are told in an almost documentary style, giving an honest, complicated look at the blossoming of friendship into love against the near-military backdrop of world-class competitive sports. Hemingway and Donnelly can act, and their drive to win is compelling, both on the field and in their personal lives. But what really makes the film worth watching are the races--stunning images, beautiful editing, and the timeless drama of athletic endeavor. --Grant Balfour

Description

This fast-paced, rollicking Disney adventure combines fatherly love and corporate survival with exciting horseplay and budding romance. The highjinks begin when harassed New York advertising executive Fred Bolton (Dean Jones) acquires a horse for his painfully shy daughter as part of a hurriedly conceived promotional campaign. With help from an attractive riding instructor (Diane Baker), and his daughter's would-be boyfriend (Kurt Russell), Fred hopes the horse will bring his client fame, save his own job, and just maybe finance his daughter's expensive equestrian habit! AS must-see for every Disney fan and lover of good wholesome old-fashioned fun..

Amazon.com

Dean Jones has a typical '60s occupation: ad man. Widower Fred Bolton is in need of a fantastic campaign to promote the stomach pill Aspercel. And in typical Disney get-a-kid-and-animal-in-there fashion, he makes the contrived decision to accommodate his sweet teen daughter Helen's longing for a horse, and advance the elusive ad campaign. Fred figures if he and Helen (Ellen Janov, in her only film role) can make a champion of the horse (now named, you guessed it, Aspercel), the name will get in the papers and Helen will have her horse. Complications arise when Helen reveals she hates riding in shows. Fortunately, her riding teacher, the beautiful Suzie Clemens (underrated Diane Baker), agrees to take up the cause, and sparks a little romance with the ambitious dad. The trio have a challenging competition and Suzie's ex, the wealthy and conceited Archer Madison (Lloyd Bochner, in a role he played often), to deal with, but as with all Disney films, good and earnest triumphs over smug and self-satisfied. Look for a young Kurt Russell, who has little to do but grace the movie (and Helen) with a little teen idolness. His introduction into the film--driving a red convertible MG--is hilarious. A sweet, easy-to-watch, harmless--if a little forgettable--film. (Ages 4 and older) --N.F. Mendoza

Description

Based on the critically-acclaimed film of the same name, SOUL FOOD - THE SERIES reunites the Joseph family in an hour-long drama series, which chronicles the lives of a tight-knit African American family living in Chicago. The series explores, in an honest and touching way, the relationship between three sisters, the men in their lives and their children. The Joseph family faces everyday struggles to which all families can relate. SOUL FOOD is not your typical family… it is simply the drama of a family.

Soul Food - The Third Season wastes no time in diving into sex, family squabbles, and workplace conflicts--the issues that this show wrestles with so very well. As the season begins, Kenny (Rockmond Dunbar, Prison Break) and Maxine (Vanessa Williams, Melrose Place) have separated and fight bitterly, to the anguish of their oldest son Ahmad (Aaron Meeks); Teri (Nicole Ari Parker, Brown Sugar) is offered a partner position at her former law firm when a powerful New York firm (run by Faye Dunaway, her face a scary mask of too much plastic surgery)--but what she thought would be her dream job proves full of treacherous compromises; Damon (Boris Kodjoe, Madea's Family Reunion), unable to face his past troubles, slips into alcoholism; and while the marriage of Bird (Malinda Williams, First Sunday) and Lem (Darrin Dewitt Henson, Stomp the Yard) seems to have found a steady groove, Bird's potential career as a TV celebrity (and the new relationships that result) threatens that stability, as does a dark figure from her past. Good writing is what makes the turbulent lives of these three sisters and their husbands, sons, and lovers seem endlessly rich. Occasionally there's a forced storyline--for example, Damon is literally haunted by his dead ex-girlfriend--but even that uncharacteristic plot came to a graceful conclusion. If there's a weakness, it's that several conflicts are resolved too quickly; some of the strongest material comes from longer character arcs. There are a number of knockout guests (including Terrence Howard, Hustle & Flow, and particularly Kimberly Elise, Diary of a Mad Black Woman), but it's the regular cast that gives this show its emotional heft; even comic sequences, such as when Ahmad keeps catching his parents having sex, are treated with grounded emotion. At its best, Soul Food offers a more honest depiction of how men and women relate than you'll find almost anywhere on television; the give and take of marriage, with its necessary frustrations and unexpected rewards, is shown in all its messy glory. The Third Season contains 20 episodes from 2002 and 2003, half of which were initially released as the show's fourth season. --Bret Fetzer

A southern lawyer sets a trap on a houseboat for a twisted ex-convict terrorizing his family. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 09/02/2003 Starring: Gregory Peck John Mckee Run time: 105 minutes Rating: Nr Director: J. Lee Thompson

Amazon.com essential video

Superior to Martin Scorsese's punishing 1991 remake, this 1962 thriller directed by J. Lee Thompson (The Guns of Navarone) stars Robert Mitchum as a creepy ex-con angry at the attorney (Gregory Peck) whom he believes is responsible for his incarceration. After Mitchum makes clear his plans to harm Peck's family, a fascinating game of crisscrossing ethics and morality takes place. Where the more recent version seemed trapped in its explicitness, Thompson's film accomplishes a lot with a more economical and telling use of violence. The result is a richer character study with some Hitchcockian overtones regarding the nature of guilt. --Tom Keogh

Description

In the brutal war against murder and corruption, there's one place where the battles are won. Nick Nolte, Melanie Griffith, Chazz Palminteri, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn, Treat Williams, Jennifer Connelly, Andrew McCarthy and John Malkovich star in Mulholland Falls, a brilliant, high-powered crime thriller electrified by hard-hitting action, forbidden passion and shocking intrigue. In 1950s Los Angeles, Max Hoover (Nolte) leads an elite squad of four detectives who play by their own rules, dealing with criminals the only way they know howwith deadly force. But when they investigate the murder of a beautiful young woman (Connelly), the detectives find themselves embroiled in a high-level conspiracy and faced with a terrifying secret that the US government is determined to keep hiddenat any price.

Amazon.com

Too much surface. Director Lee (The Edge) Tomahori's noir story serves as a McGuffin to its ripe style. Amid secret agendas and unspeakable acts onscreen you stare at the fall of light across old cops' desks. Musing on super-8 footage of naked Jennifer Connelly, your mind wanders. Ah, yes, an allusion to the opening shots of Chinatown. Roman Polanski's grand reinvocation of the dark intuitions of 1940s noir is there, too, in the sumptuous look, the plump list of stars (Nick Nolte, Michael Madsen, Melanie Griffith, John Malkovich), and the swoony, bittersweet soundtrack. The zigzags of the story that bring together two cheating husbands, one pneumatic babe, and (somehow) homosexuality waywardly recall The Big Sleep. The Atomic Energy Commission subplot feels like an homage to Kiss Me Deadly. With so many other movies to please, by the middle of the film it's clear that the story isn't going to thicken, that for all the amperage in Nolte's performance, for all the male rage in Michael Madsen and Chazz Palminteri, the hints of sexual malfeasance aren't going much past Nolte's domestic guilt about his affair with Connelly. And yet there are rich things. Tracing a path from his girlfriend to the head of the Commission (Malkovich), Nolte listens, hat in hand, to a purring existential science lecture about the invisible world of atoms. "Yeah," Nolte growls, "well, I see too much." Would that the filmmakers had let us see more. --Lyall Bush

Description

Two-time Academy Award®-winner Sally Field (1984, Actress in a Leading Role, Places in the Heart), flies in and out of trouble as Sister Bertrille in this classic and timeless series. Always with benevolent aims, Sister Bertrille gets into all kinds of hysterical situations and manages to get in trouble with Sister Jaqueline (Marge Redmond), with the Reverend Mother Superior (Madeleine Sherwood) and with a local clubowner, Carlos Ramirez (Alejandro Rey). From being mistaken for enemy aircraft to having a pelican fall in love with her to disrupting a meeting of mobsters, Sister Bertrille constantly manages to find herself in precarious and hilarious situations.

Amazon.com

Sally Field parlayed her winsome TV personality honed in Gidget into the unlikely hit The Flying Nun from 1967 to 1970. Field plays Sister Bertrille, a 90-pound novice nun assigned to a crumbling convent in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the gusty winds and her order's seagull-shaped headgear combine to give her the ability to zoom around the Caribbean helping her fellow sisters and the kids attending their school. While most of us remember the flying part--and what a great fantasy for kid viewers, especially--the gist of the series focused more about Sister Bertrille's naiveté and of her youthful determination to make changes in her stuffy convent. Sister Bertrille provides a lot of fish-out-of-water appeal, and the supporting cast is extremely likable, including the narrator, Sister Jacqueline (the great character actress Marge Redmond), and a young Shelley Morrison, who plays the American-slang-mangler Sister Sixto ("She's sharp as a tick!"), and who would go on to play poker-faced Rosario on Will & Grace. Sister Bertrille's character also owes more than a nod to Maria von Trapp; she even gets the orphan students out of their scratchy uniforms and into comfier duds, though admittedly not made of Austrian drapes. The scrapes Sister Bertrille gets into are pretty standard '60s sitcom fare, but Field's sweet earnestness gives the show appeal beyond the sum of its pieces. --A.T. Hurley
