DescriptionAfter five years and seven hugely successful series, it's time for the Macdonald clan to hang up their sporrans. But that's not before a few old friends come to visit. Love is in the air for both young and old in Glenbogle. But nothing is as it seems on the Scottish estate. Will they all live happily ever after? Find out in the final season of this immensely popular series from the BBC. Amazon.comA fine television series comes to a rich and entertaining conclusion in Monarch of the Glen: The Complete Series 7. Rarely has a TV show survived so many original cast departures and changes of focus to land on its feet with the grace of Monarch. With its final episodes putting a strong accent on a variety of overlapping love stories, it’s impossible not to be moved by the program’s strong emotions, especially a lovely series finale that includes an unexpected reappearance by one of Monarch’s most beloved characters. Lloyd Owen triumphs, finally, as the series’ leading man, Paul Bowman-MacDonald, the illegitimate son of the late Hector MacDonald (Richard Briers) and rightful Laird of Glenbogle castle and estate (in Series Five). Faced with Glenbogle’s usual financial problems, Paul soldiers on, trying to keep the peace with restless tenants--who choose a spirited lass, Iona (Kirsty Mitchell) to be their new representative--while pumping ever more energy and resources into establishing Glenbogle as a destination site for tourists. Meanwhile, stoic Golly (Alexander Morton) comes to terms with raising an infant son alone, while his grown daughter, Jessica (Rae Hendrie), tries to find her place as her father’s assistant and possible future wife of the oft-absent Duncan (Hamish Clark). Young Ewan (Martin Compston) has eyes for Paul’s goddaughter, Amy (Kellyanne Farquhar), while Molly (Susan Hampshire) struggles with cash shortages, the excesses of brother-in-law Donald (Tom Baker), and the possibility of new love. Happily, friendly Kilwillie (Julian Fellowes) returns, more enamored with Molly than ever, while Paul himself falls for Iona--just when a prior suitor turns up to claim her as a wife. It’s the usual confusion at Glenbogle, but the collective MacDonald heart is strong. Special features include a very nice documentary about the entire series, with a lot of input from so-called "Boglies," fans of all things Glenbogle. --Tom Keogh

DescriptionMeet handsome Archie MacDonald, a reluctant young Scottish laird torn between his trendy London life and the call of his wild Highland ancestry. You'll be seduced by breathtaking scenery, marvelously original and amusing scripts, and eccentric, thoroughly lovable characters. This pack contains all 16 episodes from Series 1 and 2 of the heartwarming comedy-drama. Amazon.comGorgeous to behold, slow to reveal its full charm and intelligence, Monarch of the Glen is not just for Britcom fanatics. Adapted and updated from the so-called "Highland" novels of Compton MacKenzie (author of Sylvia Scarlett), Monarch concerns the crisis of Archie MacDonald (Alistair Mackenzie), a London restaurateur all set (with his girlfriend Justine, played by Anna Wilson-Jones) to open a hip new eatery when he is interrupted by an emergency call from his home in the Scottish Highlands. There is no emergency, as it turns out, just a gambit by Archie's mother, Molly (the radiant Susan Hampshire), to effect a reconciliation between her son and his cantankerous, relentlessly bitter father, Hector (Richard Briers). The reason: Archie, much to his surprise, must legally assume Hector's longtime role as Laird of Glenbogle, the MacDonalds' 400-year-old, financially strapped 40,000-acre estate. Despite their lengthy estrangement, Hector needs Archie to save the family's honor and assets. The eight episodes in the first season find the urbane Archie fiercely resisting his obligation at first, then warming to it as Glenbogle's plight becomes more personal--not just an issue of hereditary leadership but of new attachments to the series' endearing, mildly eccentric characters. Among them is Lexie (Dawn Steele), the estate's sexy, street-smart cook; shy Duncan (Hamish Clark), an underachieving, kilt-wearing handyman; leftist land-reformer Katrina (Lorraine Pilkington), warily circling Duncan as a romantic interest; and avuncular, lovably laconic groundskeeper Golly (Alexander Morton). Monarch takes a couple of delightful episodes to introduce these good people and establish story particulars and conflicts. But depth and emotional resonance arrive by the third episode (the MacDonalds have their share of repressed, unspoken old agonies) and remain through the last episode's cliffhanger ending. The second series picks up precisely where series 1 left off. Young Archie has finally taken to his immense responsibility with seriousness of purpose and no little family pride. Father Hector has gracefully accepted his own change in fortunes but now runs little ploys to maintain a semblance of aristocratic privilege. (In one near-slapstick episode, Hector and his old friend Kilwillie, played by Julian Fellowes, try to hide a valuable barrel of malt liquor from Archie, who is trying to profit from every MacDonald asset.) Archie's efforts to keep Glenbogle solvent include turning the estate into a sprawling museum and renting the place out for weddings. The tricky bit is that Glenbogle is also a home and touchstone for the MacDonald's appealing staff and friends, and there will always be someone upset about changes in the status quo. Monarch continues to be as much about Duncan, Lexie, Golly, and Katrina (whose dodgy, romantic ambivalence toward Archie wears a little thin but finally settles into a promising groove). The radiant Susan Hampshire (The Forsyte Saga) has more to do in this set of stories and thus shines brighter as Archie's intriguing mother. Equally lovely are spectacular views of Highlands scenery: amazing castles, romantic vistas. One wants to stay forever. --Tom Keogh

DescriptionThe fortunes of the Macdonalds have always been up and down, but now Paul, Archie's brother, is newly installed as master of Glenbogle. But, he has to prove himself and also come to terms with his feelings for his brother's wife, Lexie. Meanwhile, Hector's flamboyant younger brother comes to visit, causing mayhem from the moment he arrives. Amazon.comWhere Monarch of the Glen: Series Five introduced a number of significant changes to the story of life at Glenbogle estate, a paradise in the Scottish Highlands that belongs to the ancient MacDonald clan, Monarch of the Glen: Series Six begins settling into a different direction with a host of new characters. With the show’s original central character, Archie MacDonald (Alastair MacKenzie), now gone to New Zealand and off the series, the lairdship of Glenbogle has fallen to Archie’s half-brother, the illegitimate Paul Bowman (Lloyd Owen). Off to a bumpy start, Paul tends to alienate family members, support staff, and estate tenants with his cavalier attitude toward MacDonald traditions and the needs of people trying to work the land. Above all, he offends Glenbogle’s longtime ghillie (estate manager), Golly (Alexander Morton), and gets off on the wrong foot with Isobel (Simone Lahbib), a tenant whose small farm is under siege by an avaricious neighbor who wants the deed. All of these situations will smooth out over the course of Season Six’s ten episodes, but there will be many more crises popping up before the highly enjoyable and satisfying finale. Among other things, Golly falls in love with a dance instructor and then loses her; Archie’s wife Lexie (Dawn Steele), unhappy in her marriage, returns temporarily to Glenbogle and comes perilously close to a romance with Paul; Paul’s uncle Donald MacDonald, black sheep of the clan, returns to Glenbogle after 40 years; Golly’s assistant, Duncan (Hamish Clark), entertains an invitation from Lexie to go to New Zealand and help Archie; and the seemingly unflappable Molly (Susan Hampshire), Archie’s mother, is disheartened by constant pressures within the family and her own loneliness. Longtime fans of Monarch of the Glen might find it takes a lot of adjustment to move on from the show’s wonderful early years, but the new and different Monarch ultimately proves its own worth. --Tom Keogh

DescriptionArchie MacDonald continues his struggles to make Glenbogle a success. First he must answer to the bank's new manager, then face a smooth operator who has his eye on Ben Bogle. Add in his father's usual mischief and the young laird barely has enough time to sort out his love life, which proves to be as complicated as ever. This DVD includes all eleven episodes from the third series, Richard Briers's last. DVD Features: Biographies Interviews Theatrical Trailer
Amazon.comThe third season of Monarch of the Glen, the delightful BBC-1 comedy, finds the fortunes of Glenbogle estate--jewel of the Scottish Highlands but a financial disaster--in a period of transition. On the one hand, Glenbogle's once-reluctant laird (i.e, family head and overseer of vast holdings), the former trend-setting restaurateur Archie MacDonald (Alastair MacKenzie), has settled into his leadership role for good. Archie's cantankerous, old-school aristocratic father, Hector (Richard Briers), is finally resigned to Archie's ambitious plans to save Glenbogle from bankruptcy by turning the MacDonalds' ancient castle into a tourist attraction. The estate's longtime staff--sexy Lexie (Dawn Steele), housekeeper and cook, grizzled gamekeeper Golly (Alexander Morton) and boyish handyman Duncan (Hamish Clark)--are more like family to the MacDonalds than ever. On the other hand, change is in the air. While it took two seasons for Archie to win the heart of land-rights activist Katrina Finlay (Lorraine Pilkington), it takes less than half the first episode of series 3 to lose her to an important political job in London. That leaves Archie's door open to a new relationship with an attractive adversary, a role instantly filled by the arrival of Stella Moon (Alexandra Gilbreath), a bank executive sent to seize control of Glenbogle's operations. For much of series 3, Stella is at such odds with the MacDonalds' free-spending ways that she antagonizes everyone (except Archie's enchanting mother, Molly, played by Susan Hampshire), resulting in a staff strike and the arrest of Hector himself for stealing salmon from his own river. In time, however, lonely Stella is swayed by the MacDonalds' loyalty and eccentric passions, while Archie's steadfastness and decency stir deeper feelings. Lexie, meanwhile, already in love with Archie, mounts her strongest campaign yet to win his affections. As always, the lives and loves of Monarch's supporting players prove exceptionally interesting and colorful. Series 3 introduces Golly's long-estranged daughter and Duncan's beautiful French pen-pal (who thinks Duncan is Glenbogle's laird), as well as a cad whose romantic pursuit of Lexie is tied to a dastardly plot to develop MacDonald land. The challenges never end for Archie and company, but the bonds between these wonderful characters grow deeper and sweeter. --Tom Keogh

DescriptionAs Molly MacDonald comes to terms with becoming a widow, Lexie and the estate employees must come to terms with her new position in life as fiancee of the laird, Archie. Meanwhile, Glenbogle has a new wildlife center -- and the inevitable teething troubles when a wolf goes missing; an interesting love triangle develops between Golly, Irene and Duncan; and Molly and Archie get the shock of their lives when a young man arrives in search of his past. And did we mention that Archie's former girlfriend, Katrina, makes an appearance? This DVD includes all ten episodes from the fourth series. DVD Features: Biographies Featurette
Amazon.comMonarch of the Glen: Series Four includes some of the long-running British series' finest episodes, quite an accomplishment since the drama-comedy was regrouping a bit at this stage following the departure of a major cast member, Richard Briers, at the end of series 3. The loss of Briers, who played eccentric aristocrat Hector MacDonald, actually ushers in numerous, fresh story opportunities, beginning with the rocky engagement of Archie MacDonald (Alastair Mackenzie)--Hector's son and the new Laird of Glenbogle, the immense estate in the Scottish Highlands--and Lexie (Dawn Steele). With the mantle of responsibility and privilege passing to a new generation, Archie's mother, Molly (Susan Hampshire in especially golden form), is ready to let Lexie take her place at the laird's side. But Lexie, longtime cook and housekeeper at Glenbogle, isn't ready to marry into management, and has her doubts that the often ambiguous Archie is serious about staying with her. Lexie's confidence isn't helped by the return of Archie's girlfriend from series 1 and 2, schoolteacher Katrina (Lorraine Pilkington), who wants to win him back. Meanwhile, grizzled gamekeeper Golly (Alexander Morton) takes issue with Archie's plan to turn Glenbogle into a wolf sanctuary in order to attract grants and tourists, and he feels increasingly superfluous in the MacDonalds' plans to modernize the estate. Ever-boyish handyman Duncan (Hamish Clark) tries setting Golly up with Glenbogle's attractive new cook, Irene (Rebecca Lacey), but (despite a significant difference in age and experience) she really rather fancies Duncan himself. Hector's lifelong chum, the goofy but goodhearted Kilwillie (Julian Fellowes), struggles in vain to let his true feelings for Molly be known, while Molly busies herself with the many changes taking place in her family's life. The show's writing has never been stronger or performances more winning as Monarch of the Glen enters the middle of its run, heading toward a pivotal event that threatens to topple everything at the season's end. --Tom Keogh

DescriptionThe second series of this heartwarming BBC hit features more humor, more beautiful scenery and more great moments with BBC stars Richard Briers and Susan Hampshire. Archie MacDonald has finally pledged himself to Glenbogle, but now faces a titanic struggle to make the estate turn a profit. Amazon.comThe second batch of eight episodes from the wonderful Monarch of the Glen series picks up precisely where Series One left off. Young Archie MacDonald, the London restaurateur forced to assume his role as Laird of Glenbogle--i.e., head of the MacDonald family's 400-year-old, 40,000-acre estate in the Scottish Highlands--has finally taken to his immense responsibility with seriousness of purpose and no little family pride. His cantankerous father, Hector (Richard Briers), long estranged from Archie and once bitter about asking his son to save the financially strapped estate, has gracefully accepted his own change in fortunes but now runs little ploys to maintain a semblance of aristocratic privilege. (In one near-slapstick episode, Hector and his old friend Kilwillie, played by Julian Fellowes, try to hide a valuable barrel of malt liquor from Archie, who is trying to profit from every MacDonald asset.) The tricky bit is that Glenbogle is also a home and touchstone for the MacDonald's appealing staff and friends, and there will always be someone upset about changes in the status quo. Monarch continues to be as much about lovable, boneheaded Duncan (Hamish Clark), the MacDonald's all-purpose assistant; the sexy, strong-willed Lexie (Dawn Steele); grizzled Golly (Alexander Morton); and schoolteacher Katrina (Lorraine Pilkington), whose dodgy, romantic ambivalence toward Archie wears a little thin but finally settles into a promising groove. The radiant Susan Hampshire (The Forsyte Saga) has more to do in this set of stories and thus shines brighter as Archie's intriguing mother.
