1950 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES vs NEW YORK YANKEES 1980 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES vs KANSAS CITY ROYALS 1983 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES vs BALTIMORE ORIOLES 1993 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES vs TORONTO BLUE JAYS Relive all the classic moments of four Phillies World Series appearances in 43 years in this one-of-a-kind digitally-preserved DVD. Led by Richie Ashburn, Robin Roberts, Jim Konstanty and Del Ennis, the 1950 "Whiz Kids" won the pennant on the last day of the season and faced the New York Yankees in the Fall Classic. Thirty years later the greatest moment in Phillies history took place at Veterans Stadium when Tug McGraw struck out Kansas City’s Willie Wilson. The scoreboard said it all: WORLD CHAMPIONS! Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Larry Bowa, Greg Luzinski, Garry Maddox and Bob Boone anchored the Phillies. Schmidt and Carlton were joined by the likes of Joe Morgan, John Denny and Al Holland to win another Phillies NL pennant in 1983 and a trip to the World Series against Baltimore. In 1993, Lenny Dykstra, Darren Daulton, John Kruk Curt Schilling, and Mitch Williams led a wild and crazy bunch to an upset victory over Atlanta in the playoffs. In dramatic fashion, Toronto won a second consecutive World Series championship.

1959 - LOS ANGELES DODGERS vs CHICAGO WHITE SOX 1963 - LOS ANGELES DODGERS vs NEW YORK YANKEES 1965 - LOS ANGELES DODGERS vs MINNESOTA TWINS 1981 - LOS ANGELES DODGERS vs NEW YORK YANKEES 1988 - LOS ANGELES DODGERS vs OAKLAND ATHLETICS All the glory and classic moments of the Los Angeles Dodgers World Series Championships from 1959 to 1988 are digitally preserved in this one-of-a-kind two-disc DVD collection. The Los Angeles Dodgers have set the standard for organizational excellence--team first, powerful pitching, class on and off the field--the blueprint for successful teams. The passion and excitement of Los Angeles Dodgers baseball was on full display in the first three Fall Classic® games in 1959. Each record-setting crowd at The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum swelled beyond 90,000. A tradition of October baseball was born in Los Angeles. In 1963, Sandy Koufax set the World Series strikeout record of fifteen in Game 1. Again in 1965, pitching was supreme, but this time the speed of the Dodgers charged the offense as well. The 1981 and 1988 World Series championships were fueled by the optimism of manager Tommy Lasorda.

Covering two DVDs and over three hours, Vintage World Series Films: Los Angeles Dodgers covers five championship years of the Dodgers following their move from Brooklyn to the West Coast. Beginning with 1959 (a 34-minute film narrated by future legend Vin Scully), it's a time capsule of Dodger history, from the dominance of pitchers Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale to the speed of Maury Wills to their 1981 breakthrough against the New York Yankees. Then in 1988, the Dodgers upended the powerful Oakland A's (led by Bash Brothers Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire) after a storybook home run by gimpy Kirk Gibson off A's closer Dennis Eckersley. Also key was the pitching of Orel Hershiser, who won two WS games after setting a major-league record with 59 consecutive scoreless innings during the regular season. It would have been nice if the set had included the Brooklyn Dodgers' 1955 championship, and the constant MLB logo in the corner of the screen seems like an unnecessary intrusion. --David Horiuchi

Product Description

The games included are: -Ryne Sandberg: June 23, 1984-5 for 6, 2 HR, 7 RBI -Rick Sutcliffe: 1984 NLCS game 1-no ER allowed, one HR hit -Andre Dawson: Aug. 1, 1987-3 for 4, 3 HR, 5 RBI -Mark Grace: 1989 NLCS game 2-3 for 4, 4 RBI -Kerry Wood: May 6, 1998-20 strikeouts -Sammy Sosa: September 13, 1998-61st and 62nd home runs -Greg Maddux: Aug. 7, 2004-300th career win -Derrek Lee: June 1, 2005-5 for 5, 1 HR, 4 RBI The set provides a good mix of games for Cubs fans (and if Wrigley was smart, they'd sell the set in the park), starting with Hall of Famer Sandberg's 7 RBI game against the rival St. Louis Cardinals, which saw the cubs down 7-1 after two innings, only to manage a comeback in the 11th inning, winning the game 12-11. Andre Dawson is another example of a classic Cubs player. In 21 seasons, Dawson recorded an amazing 2,774 hits and was so eager to join the Cubs that he let General Manager Dallas Green determine his salary. It's a surprise that Dawson hasn't gotten inducted into the Hall of Fame yet (Sandberg tried to push for Dawson in his Hall of Fame speech.) As for newer highlights, one disc offers Kerry Wood's 20 strikeout game from 1998 versus the Astros. The 20-year-old Wood's 20 strikeouts tied a Major League record set by Roger Clemens.

Until Major League Baseball is able to preserve footage of the 1908 World Series in a digital format, Chicago Cubs fans will have to content themselves with the Chicago Cubs Legends - Great Games Collector's Edition. It's an eight-disc set of complete games in the Cubs' history since 1984, each dedicated to a significant player. Hall of Fame second-sacker Ryne Sandberg gets the obvious game, his coming-out-party on Game of the Week when his two clutch homers vs. St. Louis Cards closer Bruce Sutter signaled something big was happening in 1984. From there you can skip to the first game of the NLCS when Rick Sutcliffe shut down the Padres and even pounded a homer to lead a 13-0 romp, Andre Dawson hitting three home runs in his MVP season of 1987, and Mark Grace's epic duel against the Giants' Will Clark in the 1989 NLCS. There's more: rookie Kerry Wood fans 20 Astros and allows no walks and only one infield hit in arguably the most dominating pitching performance of all time; Sammy Sosa crashes home runs nos. 61 and 62 in his race with Mark McGwire to set the single-season homer mark; returning-prodigal-son Greg Maddux wins his 300th career game in 2004; and first baseman Derrek Lee goes 5 for 5 in 2005.

But it wouldn't be the Cubs without some heartache, and there's plenty of it--even these memorable games (they're all wins too!) led to further misery. The 1984 heroics led to a defeat-from-the-jaws-of-victory playoff loss. Dawson's three home runs still netted him only five RBI, and the club finished in last place despite having the MVP. The 1989 NLCS was tense and hard-fought, but the game included here was the only win in a 4-games-to-1 series loss. Due to injury, Wood became the poster boy for unfulfilled potential; Sosa ended up leaving a game, and the team, in infamy; and Maddux in 2004 was not the vintage Maddux of old, nor did his addition turn out to be the move that pushed the post-"Bartman" team over the top. Lee played a big hand in knocking out the Cubs that year, and his subsequent acquisition led to near-MVP numbers in Cubbie Blue in 2005, but based on tenure he's the most questionable "legend" as of 2007, when this set was released.

That said, these games are some of the most memorable, and enjoyable, in Cubs history. And although none of the complete games is earlier than 1984, classic fans should enjoy the bonus footage of older Cubs such as Ernie Banks and Billy Williams. Unlike other MLB collector's editions, though, no new interview footage is included. --David Horiuchi

For Red Sox Nation, this boxed set may be a book out of their own personal bible: the tale of their deliverance from decades of wandering through baseball's metaphorical desert. Forget the Pharaohs--the curse of the Bambino had been enough to keep Red Sox fans dying of thirst while their nemeses, the New York Yankees, seemed to waltz right into the Promised Land again and again. And then, finally, after 86 years, the Red Sox are champions, and here's their chronicle: The Boston Red Sox 2004 World Series Collector's Edition DVD boxed set, the first collection of complete, unedited MLB games on DVD.

For the devoted fan, this is your holy grail: all seven games of the incredible American League Championship Series against the Yankees, and the four World Series games against the St. Louis Cardinals. The material is fresh out of the broadcast booth: it's pure footage of the full games, unedited, and complete (minus the commercials), so you don't miss a single pitch. Forget the endless narratives and annoying camera cuts of the average sports highlight DVD; this is nothing but the games.

MLB wisely configured the discs so you can navigate by the half-inning, moving straight to your favorite highlights without sacrificing anything from the game. Watch only the at-bats you want and set up your own personal highlight reel out of the moments you choose. Going one better than TiVO, the boxed set also includes a generously packed bonus disc, featuring the 2004 World Series Film, narrated by Denis Leary, as well as 13 other extra features including footage of the post-victory celebrations and the 2005 Ring & Banner Ceremony. Even the packaging is custom-made for fans, featuring "SleeveStats" that contain complete inning-by-inning line scores, detailed box scores, team trivia, and much more at a glance on the DVD cover. It's like a baseball card on steroids. For baseball fans, this is the complete package and then some. --Dan Vancini

It's not getting old yet, is it? Boston Red Sox fans who bought every shard of memorabilia from the magical season of 2004 could be forgiven for budgeting for the 2007 postseason with a more seasoned eye, but the basic keepsake remains: this official DVD boxed set including every pitch of the World Series against the Colorado Rockies as well as the three final ALCS wins against the Indians (combined score: 40-5). Many fans will wish the first four Indians games were included as well: the pleasure of a win is only increased by watching the struggle it took to get there. But the big moments are here: Josh Beckett's door-slamming performances in game 5 of the ALCS and game 1 of the Series, J.D. Drew's $14 Million Grand Slam, the endless rookie heroics, Jon Lester's shutout innings to sweep the Series, and Mike Lowell's MVP performance.

The format of the DVD collection will be familiar to many fans by now: the game-only Fox broadcasts, set up so you can jump to any half-inning you want, along with a bonus DVD of season highlights, postgame celebrations (yes, including the Papelbon Dance), and interviews, all packaged in info-rich sleeves full of stats and facts. And the best new feature of the year is a boon to anyone who'd prefer to relive the victories without having to invite Tim McCarver and Joe Buck back into their homes: for the World Series games you can choose to switch the audio track over to the Sox (or Colorado Rockies) radio broadcast. Nothing says New England baseball like the voice of Joe Castiglione, especially when he's announcing that Lenora Bevola of Sandwich is that night's contestant for the Mass State Lottery. --Tom Nissley

Not for Chicago White Sox fans only, this boxed set chronicles a World Series championship nearly a century in the making. The last time the White Sox won the World Series, in 1917, John F. Kennedy was born. Woodrow Wilson was president. Walt Disney graduated high school, and a first-class stamp was three cents. The drama, with its All-Star roster of heroes both sung (American League Champion Series MVP Paul Konerko, World Series MVP Jermaine Dye, and Cinderella story, closer Bobby Jenks) and unsung (Ken Williams, who, incredibly, was not named General Manager of the Year), unfolds over seven discs: The deciding game 3 of the American League Division Series against the 2004 champions, the Boston Red Sox; the deciding game 5 of the American League Championship Series against the improbably named Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; and the four-game World Series sweep of the Houston Astros. The bonus disc will be of more parochial interest, with team interviews, a replay of the final three outs of the series, the White Sox's triumphant homecoming, and player speeches at the official city celebration (the highlight: Paul Konerko presents team owner Jerry Reinsdorf with the ball Konerko caught for the final out of the World Series). Each game is presented complete, with no commercials.

Each game-disc slipcase sports box scores, team stats, game conditions, attendance, and trivia (number of foul balls in game 2 of the World Series: 55). Inside are complete inning-by-inning summaries, with scoring highlighted in red. Baseball purists can watch the games in real time (more than 18 hours in all!). The less patient can progress through inning chapters to such heroics as White Sox second baseman Geoff Blum's game-winning homer in the 14th inning of game 3 of the World Series, or shortstop Juan Uribe leaping into the stands to snag a foul ball for the second out in game 4. Though this set doesn't quite cover all the bases (all of the postseason games would have been nice), this Collector's Edition will thrill baseball fans with a sense of history. It will certainly make White Sox fans happy, but they'll be even more ecstatic if there's a sequel. --Donald Liebenson

The New York Yankees Fall Classic Collector's Edition 1996-2001 is the perfect counterargument for Yankees fans who've gotten tired of cocky Red Sox fans bragging about their comprehensive 2004 World Series DVD set. Sure, Boston finally broke its curse and in the process branded the Bronx Bombers as the greatest chokers in sports history. But let's not forget that it was the Yankees who won four of the last five World Series of the 20th century--1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000--and if this seven-disc set doesn't include every game of every series like the Red Sox set... well, that's because there are simply too many championships to cover here. What you get instead is a single complete World Series game from the four championship years, each on a single disc, and as originally broadcast on TV minus commercials: the 1996 game 4 vs. the Atlanta Braves, in which Jim Leyritz's late home run was the key to a big comeback; the 1998 game 3 vs. the San Diego Padres, in which Scott Brosius's two homers were the key to another late comeback; the 1999 game 3 vs. Atlanta, won by Chad Curtis's 10th-inning homer; and the 2000 "Subway series" game 5 clincher vs. the Mets. The fifth complete game included is the 2001 game 4 vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Yankees' late home runs off Byung Hyun-Kim are certainly part of great Yankee lore (and the 9/11 attacks that year made the Yankees a rare sympathetic figure), but when the usually automatic Mariano Rivera blew the save in game 7, the Yankees' dominating run ended, and many of the classiest Yanks such as Paul O'Neill began to retire.

Accompanying the five game discs are two bonus discs that contain the original Major League Baseball World Series highlight films from 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000. They provide an hourlong overview of each series and are a reminder of the only way people used to be able to watch baseball on home video. Also included are a variety of other memorable clips from post-season and otherwise. For example, there's a two-minute clip of the famous "Jeter flip," which snuffed out an Oakland rally in the 2001 AL division series. There's a six-minute clip of Roger Clemens's 2000 playoff game against Seattle, which includes 15 third strikes, announcer reactions, and the high-and-tight pitch that knocked down then-Mariner Alex Rodriguez and was generally credited with setting the tone of the game. In addition, each disc comes with SleeveStats, incorporating box scores, inning-by-inning line scores, team rosters, and other factoids into the packaging. All in all, it's an amazing 14-hour keepsake of one of sports' greatest modern dynasties. --David Horiuchi

The 1987 World Series. was the first to be played indoors and the raucous Minnesota Twins. fans did everything they could to blow the roof right off the Metrodome. Record-books will note this Fall Classic. for Kent Hrbek's Game 6 grand slam, while Twins fans will never forget the thunderous, homer-hanky waving crowds that propelled the Twins to a record-setting four home victories.1991 was even more remarkable. Considered to be one of, if not the greatest World Series, the Twins battled through seven extraordinary games. Kirby Puckett's stellar Game 6 including his game-winning, 12th-inning home run was matched the next night by a game for the ages. The Twins captured their second championship with a Game 7, 1-0, 10-inning victory from Jack Morris.1987: Minnesota Twins vs. St. Louis Cardinals1991: Minnesota Twins vs. Atlanta Braves

Vintage World Series Films: Minnesota Twins collects the two hour-long films summarizing the highlights of the 1987 and 1991 World Series. But both would be good candidates for a Complete Collector's Edition, especially the 1991 series that is still considered by many as the greatest ever played. The core of both teams was the same: manager Tom Kelly; hitters Kirby Puckett and Kent Hrbek; and pitchers Frank Viola and Jack Morris, supplemented by the likes of Gary Gaetti, Jeff Reardon, Scott Erickson, and Chuck Knoblauch--and of course the Homer Hanky-wielding fans turning the Metrodome into a house of horrors for opposing teams. After beating the St. Louis Cardinals in 1987, the Twins faced the Atlanta Braves in 1991. They came from behind to win, propelled by Puckett's huge bat and glove in game 6, followed by Morris's 10-inning complete-game shutout in game 7. Both individual performances were among the greatest in World Series history, and whenever a case is made for Morris's entering the Hall of Fame, his 1991 game 7 is always considered Exhibit A. --David Horiuchi
