This collection of documentaries produced by A&E presents a broad overview of organized crime in America, beginning with immigrants who formed gangs soon after arriving in the late 19th century. The focus is on Italian-American gangsters, though there are mentions of Irish and Jewish gangs, which at various times cooperated with or competed against the Mafia, and one program in the collection presents interesting skeins of conjecture while seeking to document links between the Mob and the Kennedy political dynasty. The documentaries use vintage newsreel footage as well as clips of Hollywood versions of gang life to illustrate the narration provided by Bill Kurtis. Assorted mob experts appear on camera, and though much of the material they present is entertaining, it's hard to say how credible much of it is. A flamboyant "Mob historian," William Balsamo, speaks Brooklynese from behind sunglasses, and at times his scholarly insights could almost pass for the wisecracking Senate testimony of Willi Cicci in Godfather: Part II. Despite some sensationalistic excess, these programs do tell the generally accepted story of how organized crime boomed during Prohibition, infiltrated labor unions, and eventually found a gold mine in Las Vegas following World War II. --Robert J. Part 2 focuses on the escape efforts of Allied airmen with the assistance of the French Resistance and on the escape attempt of German POWs. German POWs led by U-boat commander Jurgen Wattenburg executed once of the largest and most spectacular escapes from a US camp.

Don't infer too much from the title of this documentary series; The Real West doesn't aim for anything like a revisionist history of America's frontier. Each hour-long installment of this History Channel presentation follows the format that has been almost mandatory for television documentaries since Ken Burns's The Civil War: emotional, sometimes even actorly readings from diaries, letters, and official documents designed to bring the past to life, coupled with testimony from a variety of historians meant to put it all in perspective. The comparison really ends there, however; whereas Ken Burns was almost forced into making a masterpiece by the unending complexity of the tragedy he was disinterring, The Real West tends more often to cast little more than side glances at the messy, real-life intricacies of the events it chronicles. Instead, as this boxed set of four episodes proves, the same tall tales that have been pleasing fans of Old West folklore for decades get trotted out once more, albeit with an ironic appreciation for their role as unreliable but inspirational myth that's inevitable with a century or more of hindsight. The modern-day definition of heroes can be a little broader than before as well. Sitting Bull & the Great Sioux Nation offers a sympathetic portrait of the brave Lakota chief, while Wild Women profiles Calamity Jane, Belle Star, and Annie Oakley, whose adventures were as rip-roaring as any man's. Episodes covering the Texas Rangers and The Battle of the Alamo are not as refreshingly unorthodox, but no less entertaining as they recount the deeds of bravery that, while coming under some fire as inaccurate, have been beloved for decades now. Major American campaigns in the Pacific during World War II are ably chronicled in this set of documentaries produced by the History Channel. The focus of the films is primarily U.S. Army and Marine action, as forces using an island-hopping strategy across the Pacific made amphibious landings that were usually followed by vicious combat against Japanese defenders. Action footage shot by American combat cameramen provides the bulk of the visual material, and many of the clips dramatically demonstrate what a terrible price was paid to conquer the islands. The narration of each documentary offers information about particular combat units, and strategy and tactics are explained with the use of maps. General Douglas MacArthur, as one might expect, receives a lot of attention, and Admiral William "Bull" Halsey has an entire documentary (which is actually an episode of the Biography series) devoted to him and his naval campaigns. One film focuses on jungle warfare in Burma and New Guinea, while another provides a quick-moving overview of how warplanes were deployed by both sides. MacArthur's triumphant return to the Philippines is featured in one documentary, and the American assault against fanatical resistance on Okinawa is the subject of another film. These films do not cover the entire Pacific War, but they are informative, visually compelling, and intelligently assembled. --Robert J. McNamara
